Honestly really hard to say if realism is over-emphasized. I feel the field certainly has opened up more in recent years, in large parts also because we managed to make it more inclusive. There are way more non-male paleoartists these days than we ever had in the past and this plus in human diversity is mirrored in the diversity of art we get. At least that's how I feel about it. If it's still enough... who can say.
But I also think "realism" is something that is a little too simplified in these discussions. Realism is an art movement that arose in opposition to Idealism, which portrayed it's subjects in heightened, often glorified ways. Meanwhile realism tried to make an effort not necessarily to depict what exactly was observed but what the artist experienced as a lived reality. You see with the rise of realism a lot more depiction of "normal folk" doing normal things, having normal struggles. If we use these two terms for paleoart we actually see a very wide mix here. There is a lot of idealized imagery but also a lot of works that try to depict animals simply the way they would have been
And then there is the later hyperrealism that begins to use photo references leading to a never before seen degree of accuracy.
Yes, that a painting down there.
So you see why I might miss a little bit of nuance in these discussions ^^
All these styles and movements are linked to ideas and philosophies and that's something you can feel, to a lesser degree, in paleoart as well. We are just really beginning to lay the foundations here.
