As some of you may know, I just moved into a new apartment at the end of May, narrowly avoiding homelessness for the second time in 2.5 years. I'm currently raising money to cover the security deposit that I owe my new property manager (who graciously allowed me to move in before paying it.)

honestly one of the best things we can do for ourselves is realize that people of different ages than us can still be the same kind of person as us. it's humbling and it gives everyone involved a sense of continuity, and it busts those stupid generational stereotypes media is so fond of.

I absolutely adore that Sentinel’s weapon is a shield. When meeting Starscream, he was ready with that shield! Immediately protecting those behind him, shifting his weight to hold the knock back from throwing him off. When they were fighting the posed robot things, Sentinel put a shield around himself and Ultra Magnus! The bot who should theoretically have the most wisdom and power of the pair. He even molded his shield into a ball shape to protect them from all sides! A soldier who does his job perfectly, stand and watch. When the time is right, Sentinel stands guard and protects the others with his shield.

I feel like his ability to morph the shield shows that he IS capable of change. It shows that he truly does want to help people with the best of his ability. I feel like Archa-7 changed him the most, maybe even forever. He went from just defensive and protecting himself, to fighting. After Archa-7, he stopped just being a shield and instead became a soldier. He now has his lance to fight against enemies, and his shield to protect. I feel like this represents his personality so well! A very defensive mech, who is often obvious about what he wants (his blatant shield is use to protect, not much of a guess) who not only puts barriers between him and the world, but he also has a lance a weapon that is often used to keep things at a distance!

Everyone and everything around him is a lance’s distance away, but even those few who can get close, are still prevented by his shield. Sentinel seems like he is constantly stressed about loosing something whether it’s control, or power, argument, battle, respect, safety, pride, just anything really! I mean why else would he be such a “try hard”? He is terrified of CHANGE because the last time he couldn’t be in control, couldn’t protect or shield himself or his loved ones. His friend lost their life. His fear of organics is a direct connection to his fear of being not in control. He doesn’t trust that the world and people around him can’t or won’t hurt him. I think he convinced himself that even people who care about him can still “screw him over”. Like Optimus could “take” his respect from Ultra Magnus away, Lockdown could take away his victory, Ultra Magnus could demote him and take away his dream.

Sentinel absolutely wants to protect people. But he still believes that the best way to protect HIMSELF is to keep EVERYONE on the outside of the shield, and keeping that distance with his pointed lance.

I think fanfiction as a medium is different enough from mainstream literature in the tools it offers writers that it's a shame that it's not talked about more often. And it's not me saying "fanfic is better than books xD" because that sort of mindset is a symptom of people who aren't particularly well read in either medium. I'm just speaking of like... The little things you get to do with a fanfic that you genuinely can't really do in an original story.

I had a big fanfic in a previous fandom where one of the big reveals was the involvement of a kind of infamous villain, whose presence was built up to and foreshadowed through the whole fic until his reveal without ever mentioning his name, so that the name drop would be a gut punch. It worked especially well because of who the villain was and his presence in that fandom space specifically (it's very complicated) and if it was an original story this reveal wouldn't work at all the way it was written in the fic. Because if you don't have a predisposition to think about that character and his relationship to the hero in a very specific way, then just seeing their name won't do much to you; the reveal and the recontextualisation it pushes upon you hinges on your previous knowledge of the source material.

I think it's an interesting tool fanfic authors are given. One of my favorite fanfic of all time is partially a re-imagining of its source material's canon, and something it does is introduce antagonists much earlier in the story or deepen npcs' stories. It then works to evoke a tragic irony that again wouldn't work if you didn't know the source material, and it's something the author obviously has a lot of fun with.

You could call it cheap or a crutch and I mean, yeah, sure, it is a little bit: the fanfic relies on previously established emotional bonds and stakes to achieve its goal, and in some cases it saves the author from having to 'properly' build up its stakes. But I think it's INTERESTING that it has that tool at its disposal. I think it's a fun thing to play with and I think these built in expectations and emotional bonds are especially why I find story driven aus in particular to be fascinating in the amount of ways you can play with them. You know??

I promised to draw TFA Sentinel in Leather for a moot... Drawing him infuriates me personally lmao, but I said: "If I'm gonna do it, I'LL DO IT IN A BOMBASTIC WAY". And so after listening to a couple of YT essays on the history and importance of leather in Pride (how cool it predates it a whole decade and more! And expressed so much transgression even to this day) I decided to find a way to make him wear the flag's colors x)

We are at the end of June: I hope every queer moot and friend had a nice month. The fight never ends: keep being vocal about it, take the space we deserve!!!

I don't usually make posts like this, but if you could send some prayers or maybe a couple dollars over to my friend here, that would be great. She's struggling to gather enough money for the last of her security deposit, and I'm very worried. If she doesn't get enough, so may be homeless again. And I REALLY don't want that to happen.😣

The landlord was kind enough to allow her to stay in the apartment while she gathered the funds, but idk how forgiving they will be if she doesn't have it all by the time the date arrives. (Aka, the end of this month.)
