Spirit of Place: From Breakdown to New Career in Photography

I thought I’d share the story behind my Genius Loci Digest - a weekly digest which is more than just a travel diary. After a breakdown in my 30s, it became a salve—helping me untangle anxiety, find solace, and move forward by connecting deeply with the places around me.

After spending prolonged days wrestling with the light through my viewfinder, I’ve experienced a kind of photo-serotonin effect, as if a transfusion has taken place resulting in an inner glow, unable to stop chattering; a feeling of being baptised with the splendour of it.

☀️ Eustace Collection: The Repairer of the Breach

The peeling paint, the muted colours and the rusting iron is no more. Here time’s cataract has been removed, and I’m seeing a building as the Victorians first saw it

What struck me walking through Louth was how much cohesion is embedded within these surfaces. The town feels less designed and more incremental - shaped gradually through negotiation between utility, beauty, repair and inheritance.

The C10th Anglo Saxon stair turret at All Saints, Brixworth, Northamptonshire is a mere pup - built a couple of hundred years after the base of the tower (and arcade) which is late C7th. Like the imprint of sand left behind by the receding tide, our absence etches patterns of meaning that linger long after we’re gone.
