Spirit of Place: From Breakdown to New Career in Photography

I thought I’d share the story behind my Genius Loci Digest - a weekly digest which is more than just a travel diary. After a breakdown in my 30s, it became a salve—helping me untangle anxiety, find solace, and move forward by connecting deeply with the places around me.

My Genius Loci Digest takes you along on my camper-van camino—a journey into places, stories, and the spirit of place, but also into self: how I navigate personal struggles and face the challenges of the wider world. 🧳✨

📍Loci: ✨1620 And The Year Of Paradox

My camera is taking me beyond the threshold of time into the twill and texture of material that has been fashioned by human hands.

Over at the church of St. Mary and St. Barlok, Norbury, the alabaster form of Ralph Fitzherbert lies in repose with legs rested on a lion - but, quite endearingly - his toes are further alleviated from their eternal repose, by a tiny homunculus-like figure of a man with rosary in hand. ✨ If you're drawn to the tiny details that most people walk past, you might enjoy my Genius Loci Digest - a weekly journey through the hidden gems, spirit of place and material history of Britain. 📍Loci: Looking Through Hockney's Eyes

Here in Paris, with his work all around me, I feel the cataracts of modern life thinning and, for a moment, the light streams in just as it did through the curved glass of my Grandad’s Beetle window, heading east into the promise of Yorkshire.

Early C14th glass, from both sides, still fills the chancel with the same light that has bathed this space for around 700 yrs. Pennine mudlarking: deep in an untouched valley, the brook gives up hidden treasures: broken plates, bottles and fragments of a vanished community. See what I found and step into this amazing place 👉

When I get up close to some of the mills, I might as well be standing within the bounds of Fountains or Rievaulx - buildings that were themselves cogs in their own industrious machines devoted to wool.

Every so often my work takes me somewhere few people get to see. This hidden medieval room in York became the starting point for a journey through the city’s snickelways - and a search for the spirit of place.

After some time I feel like an imposter. I’ve spent far too long here, so I plough on through the rest of the building without a planned break. After completion, I sign out and step back into the great walled city of York.

There’s nobody else here, so I pull the camera from my bag and start to take some photographs, until I’m shuttered by an overwhelming feeling to strip back - to remove the paraphernalia of modernity.
