Lok-lok

Lok-lok has always been a favourite for the locals and it can be easily found anywhere in the country. Hence, it is crucial to stand out in taste, variety and price in order stay in business. We spotted one along the street and let us see how this stall is!

Taking in a closer look, this box van offers a myriad of variety from the greens to meat and to seafood. As for the cooking style, it offers two methods. One is to dip into a choice of clear chicken soup or tomyam and the other is to have it sizzling grilled. Not forgetting the most important final step is the assortment of sauces! These sauces i.e. blended chilli sauce, salt and pepper as well as chilli powder and etc. would definitely enhance the eating experience by adding flavours that blend well with these lok-lok. It is time to get our hands on a few and tantalize our taste buds a little!

We picked out the chicken soup dipped broccoli, squid, quails eggs and some blended chilli sauce to go with. These three sticks cost us RM10, which is quite a rip-off. As for its taste, the foods were well cooked but the soup was bland as we could not taste it and the chilli was lacking in the garlic fragrance. In short, it was a disappointment and the taste does not make the mark. We will give it a skip next time.

Mr. Pau Tim Sum

One’s famous snacks in the Jonker Street is Mr. Pau’s Tim Sum. "Tim Sum" is Cantonese that in English means snacks.

People are always queue on this stall because the dumplings and paus at this stall are tasty and succulent.

The stall has given us a great visual show. The tim sum are arranging in tidy and easily to identify. Hence, tourist will be attracted to visit the stall and buy some things to eat.

Furthermore, the stall also has sold the satay sauce fish ball, shaobao, carrot cake and yam ball.

You can mix and match different tim sum at a fair price of 5 for RM4. The satay sauce fish ball is sold in RM 4 per cup. The carrot cake is RM 0.80 per piece. Lastly, the shaobao and yam ball are sold the price of RM 1.50 each.

Muah Chee

One of the foods you must try on Jonker Street night market is the Muah Chee. Today, I want to introduce about the style of Chao Zhou Muah Chee. It is made from the glutinous rice and cutting into small size then rolling in the mixture of sugar and chopped peanut. The taste of Muah Chee is sticky and chewy.

The stall also has sold the pohpiah.

The stall had a lot of people queue to buy the Muah Chee. Thus, we also bought a small box of Muah Chee to try.

We loved the taste of Muah Chee because the chopped peanut was crunchy and taste nice. The morsel glutinous rice was soft and doughy.

You can try it on small or big box. The price is RM 3 and RM 4.

Fatimah Product Coconut Shake

Obviously we are on a food hunt here in Jonker Night Market. Well, where else should we start other than the birthplace of the Original Coconut Shake? Malacca, definitely!

At the entrance of Jonker Night Market, there are two different stalls which are selling the same coconut shake oppositely. We choose a stall called Fatimah Product which seem more customers and higher popularity compare to the other stall. We bought a small cup of coconut shake for RM 4.

Coconut Shake RM4

For you information, a coconut shake normally consists of fresh coconut flesh and coconut juice, a healthy dollop of vanilla ice-cream and then blended up with a lot of ice. It was pretty tasty to be honest. I could taste vanilla ice-cream more than the coconut which was still good. But we found that the blended ice is a little too much and we barely can taste the coconut flesh.

As for myself, I prefer the coconut shake from Klebang Original Coconut Milkshake which sells the best coconut shake in Malacca! But it is too far for us to walk to, and we were certainly not going to get a taxi to the stall just to have a coconut shake. Although this Coconut milkshake is not in the top of my list, nevertheless, it is worth giving it a try!

Baby Drink

Would you dare to drink from a baby's bottle?

This is a good way to catch people’s attention especially they are being sold in the middle of Jonker night market. The stall is also quite noticeable of their baby bottle signboard with LED light which makes them stand out from the night market.

This particular stall sells colourful drinks in baby bottles. They have six different flavors that can be choose, which include chocolate with mint, mango, honeydew, grape, apple, passion fruit and champagne. These drink in strange bottle for RM7 per bottle. By drinking from milk bottle, you will get to relive your childhood moments.

It seems to be a lovely experience however the drinks taste mediocre and the price is not so affordable. Other than that, it can be a fun thing to do as an adult. As an extra bonus, you can also keep the milk bottle as a souvenir.

Baked Quail Eggs

We were intrigued when we first saw a stall that selling skewered quail eggs. We had seen boiled quail eggs before, but skewered in thin sticks was a new thing for us.

This snack is made up of tiny balls that are topped with pieces of chicken sausage with a cracked quail egg on each. Little baked quail egg with sausage is actually a delicious Korean-style snack. There are five on a stick and top these with a combination of mayo and chili. It goes for RM 4 per stick and RM 10 for 3 sticks.

Its unique style of eating and excellent combination with sauces made us couldn’t resist. The affordable price also can explain why it is selling fast. The stall vendor keep making to ensure it is always available for the customers. So, if you ever visit Malacca, do keep a lookout for these, it doesn’t take a long time for you to try this good food. Even so, we can assure you that they are worth your time and money too.

Curry Fish Ball

The curry fish ball is originated from Hong Kong. It is cooking in a spicy and sweet curry soup and served in a small or large cups.

The small cup is RM 4 and the large cup is RM 6.

Besides, the stall also provides another option of meatball. You can mix the fish ball and meatball if you want to try both. There are many curry fish ball stall in Jonker Street.

This is an interesting food to match the Malaysian favourite food - fish ball and curry together. The curry soup was not too spicy so suitable for those people who do not like spicy. Furthermore, it is a snack suitable for you eat while walking around Jonker Street.

Watermelon Juice

Nothing beats a nice cup of freshly squeezed juice as a thirst quencher. We stumbled upon this push cart juice stall that specialises in melon juices and we are talking about the many different types of melons. Out of the many types of melons, the stall’s specialty is the mini watermelon juice and the price of juice varies from RM8 – 12 according to the watermelon size.

What is more fascinating about this stall is how they prepared and served the juice! The usual watermelon juice that we order is squeezed to get the juice and have it served in a cup. Unlike the rest of the sellers, the person cut a small circle big enough for its hand held blender to go through and blend all the fruit inside the watermelon. When it is done, the juice is served in the watermelon itself, similar to how the local coconut juice is served here in Malaysia.

As the fruit is blended instead of squeezed, bits of the fruits can still be tasted and it is akin to a slushie or puree instead of a juice. This watermelon juice would be best appreciated by the fruit lovers and health conscious folks as it contains no added sugar and water and the natural sweetness of the fruit could be tasted. In other words, it is a pure juice. The size of the watermelon juice is more suited for sharing as it was very filling if you drink it all on your own. It is certainly worth giving it a try!

Penang Char Kuey Tiao

As we continue with our food discovery, we sensed a mouth-watering aroma, emitting the fragrant garlicky flavours from a push cart stall and we were adamant in tracking it down.  The aroma led us to this stall labelled as ‘Penang Char Kway Teow’ as translated in English. The stall is ordinary looking and small but many still spotted it as there was a queue. Fearing of missing out, we immediately joined in the queue for a plate of the Char Kway Teow.

After a 15 min wait, it was finally our turn to stomach the irresistible and aromatic char kway teow. As this is a take-out stall, the kway teow is packed into a transparent plastic rectangular box. The appearance is rather simple and common as compared to the other stalls. When we tried on our first spoonful of the kway teow, we could taste the authentic flavours of garlic, soy sauce, egg and a hint of chilli bursting in our mouths. It was appetising and left us wanting for another bite and more. Next up was the prawn and bean sprouts. It was surprisingly succulent and not undercooked! The bean sprouts were thoroughly infused with flavours. It certainly exuded the authentic flavours of Penang.

The portion was decent for a small size. However, the seller was rather generous with the prawns and bean sprouts. The kway teow was the thin size type and it did not leave a queasy feeling behind even after we finish it, simply because it was not oily. No complains on the higher price charged i.e. RM6.50 for a small plate as our palate is greatly satisfied and it exceeds our expectations. We will definitely be back for more!

Nyonya Kuih

“Kuih” is fairly like cake but it is made from rice or glutinous rice. The Nyonya Kuih has a long time history. It comes from a nation which is called “Baba Nyonya”. “Baba Nyonya” is the descendants of the Chinese intermarry with the Malacca local resident.

Nyonya Kuih has many different types of kuih but we only introduce about three popular type. Nyonya Kuih is most sweet and savoury.

The left one is called “pulut tekan”. It is made from glutinous rice with pea flowers so the Kuih colour is blue. You can eat it together with the kaya.

The middle one is called “kuih seri muka”. It is same with the left one. However, the kaya has already at the top of the kuih so you can just eat it.

The right one is called “kuih lapis”.

The price of the left one is RM 2 each, middle and right is RM 1 each.

The Kuih was colourful and nice. We bought a few of kuih to taste. It was very delicious and the kaya was very nice

If you are interested in the traditional food of the Baba Nyonya, I will recommend you to try this. The stall is available in night market and beside the coconut shake stall.

Pohpiah

Popiah also known as spring rolls are quite popular through out Malaysia. When we are hunting for food along the Jonker Night Market, we found a stall that selling popiah and we decided to stop and try for it. Popiah originated from the Fujian province in China and brought to Malaysia by the migrating Chinese back in the day.

Popiah is made by a thin paper like crepe and stuffed with various of ingredients which included some vegetables, cooked meat, eggs and peanut powder. You can choose to have a spicy flavour popiah or an original flavour popiah.

We ordered just one single original flavour popiah for RM 3.00. The popiah tasted so fresh and delicious as the combination of the vegetables and sauces are perfectly match!

This popiah stall always crowded with customers. People keep coming and ordering nonstop. However a downsides of being famous falls on its customers, they had to patiently wait. And since there is only one person is making popiah, the production rate is rather limited.

If you never tried a popiah, I definitely recommed you give it a try. You can choose the original flavour if you cannot take spicy foods. It is well worth the experience while in Jonker Night Market.

Oyster Station 蚝站 Jonker Street

Jonker’s Walk on Jonker Street is a lively night market. You don’t really go for the knickknacks but to eat the delicious famous local that line up along the street.

Jonker Night Market has a famous fried oyster omelet stall and we managed to try it out during our recent Malacca trip. The fried oyster omelet at Oyster Station is RM 10 per serving.

Simply equipped with a big skillet and and the other necessary ingredients, the stall owner will start to prepare the fried oyster omelet after got orders from customers.

Firstly, two eggs with some oil are poured in the big skillet. The stall owner would then stir it consistently until the eggs turn golden brown. Various ingredients and seasoning added into the big skillet which included oysters. At this point, you would definitely smell the wonderful aroma from the fried oyster omelet!

Anyway, the fried oyster omelet is not bad, but the size of oysters is too small and the amount of oysters is definitely limited. The price RM 10 is too pricey for one small portion of fried oyster omelet. As for myself, the fried egg part is definitely delicious and I really enjoyed eating it. The eggs are simply delicious, and I don’t actually care much about the oysters!

Nyonya Chang

While we strolled along Jonker night market, we were surrounded by many vendors selling loads of Nyonya goodies including Nyonya Chang. Since Malacca is famous for their Nyoya Chang, we definitely would not want to miss out.

We found a particular stall has sold both Nyoya Chang and Bak Chang. Being a fan of Bak Chang I couldn’t let this opportunity to slide away. So, we bought Nyoya Chang for RM5.50 and Spiced Salted Egg Yolk Bak Chang for RM6.50.

Nyonya Chang

For someone who doesn’t know, Nyonya Chang is a traditional cuisine created by Melaka Peranakan ethnic. With patch of blue glutinous rice that colored by a flower named butterfly pea, the cuisine is literally filling with minced pork belly, mushrooms, candied winter melon, pork fat and spices then wrapped it with bamboo leaves. We can taste the balanced blend of sweet and salty from every bite as well as the glutinous rice is well-cooked to possess a firm texture. It is much more than usual Bak Chang that we had even tried.

Bak Chang

Compared to Nyoya Chang, these Bak Chang seem to be more common to us as it is the traditional food of the Dragon Boat Festival. These Bak Chang with dark brown appearance are made from glutinous rice filled with diced pork, mushrooms, dried shrimps, chestnuts,salted duck egg yolks and a mixture of spices in the bamboo leaves. Minced pork and chestnuts add texture and a bit of sweetness. Also, the salted duck eggs yolks which play an important role by adding a touch of colour and particular flavour to the Bak Chang.

 All and all the glutinous rice was cooked to perfection and the spices was flavorful. This is definitely our kind of Nyonya Chang and Bak Chang. Not to be missed.

Chinese burger

As the sun goes down on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, the makeshift stalls will take over and line on each side of the street to prepare for Jonker Walk Night Market. Despite we were already full, filling our tummy with all the good food, there is always space for this.

The first thing that we tried in night market was Chinese burger. This Chinese burger is not like the usual McDonald's burger that we see. The bun is actually made of omelette cakes with various type of filling such as sambal prawn, ham, chicken floss, octopus, hotdog and crab meat. Since there are quite a number of choices, we decided to opt for ham and each for RM3.

The omelette was juicy and slightly crispy on the outside while the ham filling was both sweet and a bit salty. We found that it was the best among all the other options as we could smell the aroma of ham from every bite.

Also, we had tried to find some information about this Chinese burger but we didn’t find any related articles or images about this Chinese burger. Because of this, it gave us an idea that it might be something that have been newly created by the stall owners. We could be wrong though, so if anymore do recognise what these are, let us know.

We found that Chinese burger is in the different version that they called ‘rou jia mo’. They use Chinese steamed buns or baos with the meat filling that might consist of chopped pork, beef, lamb or chicken that has been stewed with a variety of spices. As we can see, the appearance is quite similar with the one in Jonker Street, but the cooking method and ingredients that they used are totally different. So, we guess that the version of Chinese burger in Jonker Street is more to cater the preference of Malaysian. Besides, as we came from Johor, Malaysia, we didn’t find something that is similar to this Chinese burger in Johor.  So, we recommend anyone who are going to travel in Malacca can give it a try!

Taste Better One Bite Durian Puff

One of the must-get food at Jonker Street is the durian puff from Taste Better One Bite Durian Puff. The store is located just beside the Jonker 88 which we had introduced. Although the store is right beside the Jonker 88, we didn’t notice the store at that time. When we walking along the Jonker Night Market, we just found a stall which is selling the Taste Better One Bite Durian Puff which we are so dying to try.

Other than this stall, there is another stall which selling exactly the same products and located at the other side of the Jonker Night Market. Since it is a bite size, we bought six durian puffs to make it a box which cost RM 15.00. The price had increasing through the years because of the high reputation among the tourists.

The staff reminded us to finish it in one mouth but the puff was simply too big for us. We had such a hard time trying to finish it in one mouth but the bursting creamy durian flavour in the mouth is really satisfying. Although most of us used to not like stuffs made by durian but for these durian puffs, we just loved it so much.  

Be sure to grab a durian puff to taste when you are visiting the Jonker Street or Jonker Night Market. The taste of the puff will be unforgettable in your life, for sure.

San Shu Gong

San Shu Gong is a giant local product shop which you cannot miss when you’re in the Jonker vicinity. San Shu Gong is a four-storey house which painted in red color and located just at the entrance of Jonker Street which you won’t miss the building and the huge signboard once you reached Jonker Street. San Shu Gong sells a multitude of local delicacies, ranging from traditional biscuits such as dodol (durian/original flavoured) and KaiChai biscuits to healthy drinks such as Honey Lime and Essence Lime with Liquorice (Chen Nie Lao Ji).

Inside the San Shu Gong building got a small stall called Lao Qian Ice Cafe which selling the famous durian cendol and coffee or teh tarik to customers. Since all of us had tasted cendol at the other store, we did’t go for the durian cendol this time.

Essence Lime with Liquorice in bottle (RM 4.30).

We purchased the bottled teh tarik and Essence Lime with Liquorice. Teh tarik cost RM 3.90 per bottle and Essence Lime with Liquorice cost RM 4.30 per bottle. Teh tarik was marvelous and irresistible. It is chilled and retained its flavor at the same time. Other than in bottle packaged, you can purchased the teh tarik in instant package.

Essence Lime with Liquorice is a healthy drink which is very refreshing and with a sweet, sour and saltish taste. Essence Lime with Liquorice is a good diet choice for all of us. In the end, I bought a jar of Essence Lime with Liquorice (RM 22.80) for my family.

San Shu Gong is a must-visit store when you visiting Jonker Street. It provides a wide range of local produce which surely worth for purchasing. Feel free to taste any of the samples before purchasing.

Christina Ee Pineapple Tarts

Pineapple tarts have got to be one of Malaysia's favourite snacks - there's just something about that sweet, jammy goodness combined with a crumbly buttery crust. Pop open a box and it’s likely to be empty before you even realise it. There are a few types of pineapple tarts: the open-faced tart usually topped with a lattice, and the rolled pastry enclosing the jam.

There is no shortage of pineapple tarts in Melaka.  Here, we bring you the best pineapple tarts we ever had. 

Chritina Ee pineapple tart is one of the many shops that bake their tarts so fresh, you can feel the heat from their ovens. When you buy a jar, the tarts are still warm. It's tempting to immediately open one and wolf down all of its contents. 

Pastry: While the sample was delicious, some of the tarts we bought tasted slightly burnt and the pastry was crumbly to the point of being rather powdery. However, they had the luscious aroma of butter which helped us forget most of its shortcomings. 

Jam: The filling was delicious. It was soft and flavourful without being mushy. 

Verdict: Because the pastry was a tad too crumbly, taking a bite into the tart will result in a sticky, powdery mouth-feel, but as soon as you get to the filling inside, the flavours and textures balance out perfectly.   

One jar of pineapple tart costs RM 20.90.
