Cabin Pressure: an example of feminists being funny
Letâs start with Carolyn. Carolyn is fierce. At one point Douglas jokes about her sharpening her teeth. Her sharp tongue is time and again used to put nearly every other character in the show in their place leaving her on top as the alpha dog. This alpha dog position which is referenced explicitly in the script, is the closest they ever get to invoking the b-word, but even that canine reference is not used to hint at it.
Unlike nearly every other program Iâve ever watched her remarkable fierceness is not coupled with jokes on how this makes her an undesirable woman. Traditionally another b-word, battleaxe, is used to describe fierce when and used in asides between male characters to communicate and commiserate both the undesirability and fierceness. She is never joked about as ugly, nor is her present appearance praised or evaluated by others. The closest we get to that is when in Uskerty, Martin suggest he hide and she do the flagging down of motorist because the strangers will see her as a presumably helpless little old lady and stop. Not only is he quick to point out he doesnât see her that way, but he demonstrates that by acting as if there is a chance sheâll take turns with him riding in the back with the geese, something one wouldnât expect of a fragile little old lady.
Carolyn does get a love interest and sparring partner, Hercules Shipwright, a pilot and general sky god. While the fact that they are dating is a source of amusement it is again not because she is seen as undatable or undesirable. Carolyn being in love is not used to transform her into a different person. She doesnât become soft spoken or submissive and doesnât shed one once of dominance.
We do get to see her be emotional and occasional glimpse her fear of being just a little old lady instead of CEO of an airline. We also see her love for Arthur, her son, oft referred to as idiot boy, and see her shower her little dog with care and affection. These bits of softness are not used to undermine her strengths. Nor are the occasional indignities visited upon her like being called dearie and a babushka. She never letâs these go unanswered.
And most unusual of all, she gets to laugh and snipe at men, even her beloved Herc. She finds it hilarious that he is afraid of sheep. She goes to great lengths to make the most of it, even flying to Ireland to buy him a stuffed sheep because she knows heâll detest it. Carolyn gets to laugh openly in the face of a man and yet still gets to marry him Iâm the end. Nor is he shown as unmanly for that happening, but analysis of his character will wait for another post.

They have menâs basketballs, womenâs basketballs, and youth sized basketballs. Just like they have different sized footballs for different ages.
Equality does not mean everyone gets the same thing because we are all inherently different. Equality is recognizing differences and making sure everyone gets the same opportunity based on those differences, which isnât always âequalâ.
