I suppose it's high time I made an introduction post, isn't it?

to start: I am a Hellenic polytheist, and have been on and off for quite some time. my practice began over a decade ago with a lot of research and care, and while I have strayed to other paths along the way, I have always come back (and believe I am here to stay, now). I primarily work with (in order of longest to shortest length of time) Hestia, Hades, Persephone, Hecate, and Aphrodite. I am always learning, always hungry for more knowledge.

my practice manifests in a lot of green, kitchen, and cottage witchcraft, along with divination and spell jars galore. I dabble in a bit of everything, but these are my primary modes of practice. I enjoy tarot the most, as well as pendulum work.

I occasionally post photos of my practice, but often like to keep it to myself. many rituals and spells I perform are deeply personal, as witchcraft has been a way to connect with myself and the world around me. please, meet any of my posts about my personal practice with respect and kindness; I am open to criticism, of course, if I am mistakenly participating in a practice I should not be or engaging with individuals that are harmful/dangerous. but beyond that, please remember I am a person with feelings behind the screen.

As a reminder, cultural appropriation isn't about preventing other people from taking part in cool stuff, it was a term invented to specifically describe a people who were already suffering from colonialism and genocide actively watching chunks of their identity being sold off for cheap parts while being forced to cut their hair and change their names and stop speaking their language. Cultural appropriation is an explanation about how an extremely soft form of misuse of cultural artifacts can still damage the culture of a living people as its tools and images are taken for profit and entertainment.

You know who benefits from selling "voodoo" yarn keychains at the grocery store? Not ATR practitioners. You know who benefits from selling dismembered Buddha heads at the local shopping mall? Not Buddhists. You know who benefits from selling that "Indian Bow and Arrow" toy set at the dollar store? Not Native people. You know who benefitted from selling Bindis at Claire's in the early 2000s? Gwen Stefani. No one else. Just her.

When members of a specific culture walk up to you and say, "hey, treating a Wendigo like a new pop culture media creature in your monster of the week content form is really harmful, because despite being evil, its place in our spiritual hierarchy is still part of our religious beliefs, and having inaccurate stories outside of our purview is actually blowing right through several important parts of our oral tradition," why would your response be "no, because it's MY right to alter YOUR story however i want, because gatekeeping is racist." ????? It has no relevance to you. You aren't depending on this. Why do you even care??

As someone who spends my whole workday answering repeat questions from kids, I HAVE to laugh when I see people aggressively complaining about beginner helpols asking the same questions. You wouldn't last an hour in the asylum that pays for my health insurance.

As I think about it more, this is also extremely applicable to when I worked retail.

Imagine: Someone comes in and asks me which aisle coffee is in. I look at them, roll my eyes, and say:

"Look at the signs. Holy shit, people like you are so annoying."

.... Unhinged, right? Even if I've had a rough day or am going through something, you don't treat people like that.

There are signs posted, the information is out there, but maybe this person is overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information being thrown at them. Maybe this person has never been in the store (i.e. website/social media) before and is just a little lost. Maybe they tried looking for the coffee, but couldn't find it. The store is big. It's easy to miss things.

Or maybe they walked in, saw a worker - someone who knows the store well - and said, "hey, can you point me in the right direction? I've never been here before."

And for every customer that asks a question, there's a handful who came in, saw the signs, and found the coffee themselves. Good for them.

Point being, if you're someone who gets aggressive over someone asking questions, I am genuinely concerned for how you interact with people in the real world. And the beauty of the internet? If you see something that annoys you, you can scroll! You literally don't have to interact with it. I do it all the time!
