Video: Hossam Al-Qazzaz has recently given us a glimpse of a day in the life of his family through a video he sent to us, featuring his infant daughter Habiba, son Bashar, and other daughter Diana. Despite their living conditions, Hossam does his best to keep his children's spirits high.

Story written by @rumiandroses
Imagine being born into a world where the first sounds you hear are explosions, the hum of drones, and the cries of your family fleeing for their lives. This is the reality for Habiba Al-Qazzaz, a precious baby girl who has known nothing but war, displacement, and hunger in her short life. Born in Gaza amidst the ongoing conflict that began on October 7, 2023, Habiba has spent much of her existence so far in uncertainty, hunger, and fear.
This precious little girl is not even a year old, and already, she has suffered through unimaginable hardship.
Her parents, Hossam and Hanan Al-Qazzaz, are doing everything they can to care for Habiba and her three siblings—Bashar (9), Hani (8), and Diana (4). But the relentless devastation of Gaza’s infrastructure has made survival nearly impossible. With no stable income and essential supplies priced beyond reach, the Al-Qazzaz family is fighting a daily battle just to keep their children warm, fed, and safe.
Their GoFundMe campaign has been their only lifeline, allowing them to afford the most basic necessities—food, water, milk for Habiba. Yet despite the thousands of people who have seen and shared their plea, donations have been coming in at a painfully slow pace. Since last year, they have managed to raise only €2,000, an amount tragically short of their €55,000 goal—the sum they had hoped would allow them to evacuate to Egypt with Hossam’s elderly parents and start anew.
Forced to Live on Top of Rubble
Images: (Top) Bashar, Hani, and Diana, still able to smile in spite of the devastation they've been forced to endure. (Bottom) Hossam Al-Qazzaz, as he does his best to clear their destroyed home of debris to make it slightly more suitable for habitation.
As time passed and donations fell short, the family was forced to abandon their dreams of escape. Instead, they now live atop the ruins of their destroyed home, sheltered only by a fragile tent that does little to protect them from the cold, roaming animals, or the ever-present danger of violence. Their reality is bleak, and their options are running out.
On February 8, 2025, Hanan reached out to us with an update on her family's condition:
Image: Hanan's update message to us, informing us of her family's current condition.
The freezing temperatures persist. Her children are crying for warmth in a shelter that provides no protection from the elements.
This is Not a Call for Comfort—It’s a Plea for Survival!
The Al-Qazzaz family is NOT asking for luxuries. They are asking for the bare minimum:
🧤🧣Warmth for their children.
🍞💧 Food and clean water.
🏠🚪A secure shelter.
With further violence looming, the time to act is NOW.

A Family of Resilience and Kindness
Hossam Al-Qazzaz is also the cousin of Falestine Asad, another courageous individual struggling to keep her infant child safe in war-torn Gaza. Both Hossam and Falestine are some of the kindest and humblest people you will ever meet. If you can, we encourage you to view and share both of their campaigns, and to donate if possible.
Together, we can help the Al-Qazzaz family find the security, warmth, and stability they so desperately need.
No child should have to suffer like these poor babies have.
Let’s all be part of the reason they make it through another day, and into a brighter, more peaceful future. 🙏🏻🕊️💗

Hello my friend, how are you? I hope you are well. Unfortunately, we are not well. The sounds of explosions are everywhere. We are very terrified, and very hungry. For more than two weeks, we have not changed our clothes because our clothes were burned in the bombing of our tent. We have not received any food from the aid because we are marginalized and no one cares about us. Food is expensive and we cannot even buy it. We eat one meal in today . Please donate to us for the sake of the children. I trust you, my friend.
Hey everyone, my name is Abdelmajed. I don’t usually talk much about myself, but today, I want to share a little piece of my story.
I was born and raised in Gaza, a place that has always been my home 🏡. I grew up surrounded by my family, my friends, and the streets that I knew like the back of my hand. Life wasn’t always easy, but we had love, laughter, and dreams. I used to think that no matter what happened, home would always be here. But life has a way of changing things in ways we never expect.
Over the past months, everything I once knew has disappeared. The streets that were once filled with children playing are now silent. The houses that held so many memories are now just rubble. And the people I loved—some of them are gone forever. 💔

Sirius nodded silently, bottom lip trembling. Remus was swallowed whole by concern and care for him, the emotions washing over everything inside of him.
Without thinking, Remus moved to the side and lifted up the covers, creating space for Sirius.

Remus can hardly bear his own yearning anymore, when Sirius has another one of his nightmares.

The Gryffindor common room wasn’t loud nor quiet. It hovered at that in-between Remus loved so much. The chatter of the students a steady hum, the fire bathing everything in warm light, his friends nearby. The armchair he sat in was cozy, the History of Magic essay he just finished lying on a table along with a pile of books.
“Remus,” a voice he knew groaned, and then he felt a familiar weight drop into his lap, familiar eyes looking into his.
“I hate homework,” Sirius whined. Remus watched his eyes close and face scrunch up in despair.
“You’ll feel better if you just write it,” he told him. Sirius opened his eyes, grey irises and Remus felt his poor heart clench.
“I know, but I don’t want to.” And who was Remus to ask Sirius to do something he didn’t want to do? The drawn out syllables of his tired tone touched some feeling deep in the melting pot of emotions that Remus was. When Sirius was like this, all Remus wanted to do was hold him. Remus just wanted to hold him.
Despite Sirius now laying across his lap, so close, close enough that Remus was breathing in the minty, woody scent of his hair, he couldn’t wrap his arms around him and pull him closer. Not here in the common room, not with James and Peter nearby, not when if he did, Sirius would look up at him questioningly, think him weird. He wouldn’t ask him about it unless Remus brought it up, he knew that. Sirius never made him uncomfortable, other than when he unknowingly made his blood rush, cheeks hot, and everything too tight. But Sirius would wonder.
Seeing the change in Remus’s expression, he lifted his hand, and Remus briefly wondered if he was going to touch his face. Instead, Sirius placed his hand over Remus’s. The warmth of his skin melted Remus a little more. Every time Sirius did anything, he melted just a little more. One day, Sirius would look at him and smile, and Remus would be a puddle on the floor.
The moment was so quiet, so soft, he nearly forgot they were in the common room. With all his willpower, Remus pulled his hand out from underneath Sirius’s and ruffled his hair, letting the strange softness pass.
He could swear he almost saw a slight pout from Sirius. It was probably just wishful thinking. Remus did a lot of that. He would lay in his bed at night, curtains drawn, Sirius right behind his eyelids. He’d hear his soft breaths from his bed and wish he could feel that chest rise and fall.
Sirius stuck out his tongue, and Remus thought of his Animagus form. This boy made such a sacrifice for him, to make Remus’s little problem easier. Remus worried he would be caught. He didn’t want Sirius to end up in Azkaban.
Remus smiled at him. “Are you going to write that essay?”
This time Sirius really did pout. “What if you did it for me?” He playfully batted his eyelashes.
Remus gave him a little shove. “I thought the great Sirius Black could handle something as trivial as a History of Magic essay. I already did mine.”
“I thought the great Sirius Black had enough charm to be persuasive. How could someone refuse a man as hot as me?” He flipped his gorgeous hair, and Remus wanted to run his fingers through it so bad.
“Nope. You haven’t even managed to score a date lately, maybe you’ve gotten uglier.”
“Something like that,” Sirius groaned, rolling off of Remus, to his disappointment. The place where he was sat now felt cold, lacking in the extra body heat. But the amber-eyed boy’s thoughts disappeared when Sirius stretched.
God, he had a problem.
“Oi!” James shouted from his spot on the ground. “Don’t you dare touch me–” he started as Peter tried to sit in his lap.
“But they were doing it!” Peter whined as James shoved him off.
“It’s Sirius, he has pretty privilege,” James responded. “I’d let him sit on me too.”
Remus pulled himself up with a sigh. “I’m headed up to bed.”
“No, you’re headed over here to help me with this conclusion,” Sirius corrected.
So that’s what Remus did. Really, he thought, Sirius could ask for anything, and Remus would do it just to see his smile light up his gorgeous face. Every time their hands brushed when Remus was pointing things out, he felt something inside of his ribcage. After James and Peter had gone up to the dormitories, when Remus and Sirius were the last two people left in the Gryffindor common room, the mood shifted into something softer. Something Remus couldn’t quite place his finger on. It wasn’t unpleasant.
Remus blinked sleepily, staring at Sirius as the boy wrote carefully on his parchment, nearly done. His eyes traced down Sirius’s cheekbones to his jawline to the tendons in his neck. He blinked again. Remus’s eyes were so heavy, by the time he opened them, he was met with Sirius’s slightly concerned gaze. Remus didn’t have it in him to look away from those grey irises, from his best friend.
“Reckon we should turn in for the night?” Sirius asked, breaking the tension. All that strange but oh-so-welcome softness has dissipated, though if Remus looked hard enough, he could see something in Sirius’s eyes.
“I tried to do that ages ago, dumbass,” Remus responded, suddenly nervous. He stood up, and Sirius’s hand reached towards him, then fell limp, as if he was going to help. Remus was first up the stairs, and his mind was completely fixated on Sirius. If this wasn’t resolved soon, he thought, it would distract him for just about everything. He kept his eyes trained carefully ahead of him.
Peter was asleep, and James was staring at the ceiling when they entered. James’s eyes flitted down to meet theirs, and then he closed them.
Remus slipped into the bathroom to change into his nightclothes. It was when he started brushing his teeth, absently studying his face, the freckles and scars, in the mirror, that a figure he knew all too well walked in behind him. He made eye contact with Sirius in the mirror, and Sirius grinned. Remus couldn’t help but smile back, something warm growing in his chest, and maybe on his cheeks too. Sirius grabbed his pyjama pants and walked out of the bathroom.
By the time Remus was done, James was fully asleep, and Sirius was standing with his back to Remus. His back was bare, and his pyjama pants were slung loosely over his hips. Remus felt his cheeks go warm. Sirius turned around. “Do you know where my shirt is?” he whispered.
Remus rolled his eyes, feigning annoyance, desperately trying to hold onto some piece of snarkiness and keep it together. “Check the bathroom, that’s where your pants were, no?”
Sirius obliged, and a few seconds later came walking out, sliding the shirt over his head. While his eyes were covered, Remus stole a quick glance. When Sirius was settled into bed, properly clothed, he stuck his tongue out gently, and Remus shook his head, smiling.
Once Remus was beneath the covers, he turned his head on his pillow to watch the closed curtains of Sirius’s bed. He longed to hold him while he slept, to watch those pretty eyes get heavier and heavier.
Remus fell asleep with Sirius as the last thing on his mind.

Remus awoke to a murmuring in front of him. He opened his eyes, blinking blearily, and recognized Sirius. He was standing at his bedside, nose red and dried tears on his face with puffy undereyes. Remus felt concern and worry immediately swell within him.
He could guess what had happened, as it wouldn’t be the first time, but Sirius had never come to him before. It was always Remus who would walk quietly to his bedside and comfort him.
“Nightmare?” Remus whispered into the air.
Sirius nodded silently, bottom lip trembling. Remus was swallowed whole by concern and care for him, the emotions washing over everything inside of him.
Without thinking, Remus moved to the side and lifted up the covers, creating space for Sirius.
Sirius looked at him questioningly with wide, glossy eyes, and Remus felt a small bit of embarrassment, but it was too late.
Sirius slid into the bed.
Remus was met with the warm and solidness of a body. They faced each other on the same pillow, Remus biting his lip with worry and Sirius breathing shakily.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Remus whispered into the still air, quieter than their beating hearts.
Sirius shook his head. He was usually uncharacteristically quiet after this sort of thing. Remus blinked slowly in acknowledgement. “Is there anything I can do?”
“This is good.” Sirius managed a rough whisper.
In the beginning, Sirius would go to James for comfort. But when Remus was the one who would wake up from the muffled sobbing and see Sirius’s shoulders shaking, his face buried in his pillow, things changed. James probably suspected it, since Sirius came to him less and less. But the most Remus had done before was sit on Sirius’s bed and rub his back until he was calm.
Remus smiled softly, and wrapped an arm around Sirius’s waist, pulling him closer.
“So you don’t fall off the bed,” Remus explained, hoping the pure love wasn’t audible in his voice, though even he could hear it coating his words.
By the way Sirius smiled, the sadness and worry leaving his eyes, he could hear it too. Wordlessly, he tucked his head under Remus’s chin, burying himself into the crook of his neck. Remus didn’t feel his heartbeat pick up like he thought it would. Instead, he felt slow-moving affection, dripping through him like honey. He could smell Sirius’s soft black hair. Mint and something woody. He inhaled deeply, knowing Sirius could feel the movement. Remus felt Sirius’s eyelashes flutter against the skin of his neck, felt his eyes close.

Sunlight filtered through the windows into the dormitory. Remus could still hear the soft snores that belonged to Peter. Slowly, he took notice of his position.
Sirius’s face was buried in his neck, and Remus could feel his warm breath on his skin. Softer than his affection, fainter than the morning fog outside, Remus kissed Sirius’s head. He knew Sirius wouldn’t feel it.
For a while, they stayed like that, Sirius still fast asleep in Remus’s arms. One of Sirius’s arms had found their way around Remus, and he thought that even if he wanted to, he wouldn’t be able to leave. He didn’t mind.
Remus felt Sirius move against him, trying to stretch. Disoriented, he pulled his face from underneath Remus’s to fully rest on the pillow, eye to eye, and get a good look at him.
The words good morning were on the tip of his tongue, but so were the words I love you, and Remus knew he couldn’t risk opening his mouth.
Instead, he gently parted his lips, and watched as Sirius’s eyes flicked down to see them and then up to watch Remus blink. Looking over Sirius’s head, he saw that they’d forgotten to close the curtains. James was sat up in bed, occasionally giving a knowing glance. Remus looked back down to the boy in his arms.
They exchanged no words, only watching each other, feeling the honey-like love drip off of Remus’s gaze, some shade of amber, just like his eyes.
Through the eye contact, Remus knew what Sirius was feeling. Some shade of love, just like Remus. And Remus was comfortable to stay right here forever, breathing him in.
