something i haven’t seen anyone talking about is how much jealousy plays a part in shane and ilya’s relationship with each other, especially in the beginning. Like shane is so jealous of ilya because he’s charismatic and white and is attracted to women. To him, everything is just so easy to Ilya and he fits into the hockey world in a way Shane never can. To Ilya, Shane is flawless, incredible at hockey, and has a perfect family. He speaks his second language perfectly. He’s the media’s darling and hockey’s golden boy. No one has a bad word to say about him. Obviously at this point they barely know anything about each other, and they don’t start deconstructing these fantasies until they’ve been hooking up for a while. But i think it’s really important to note that part of the satisfaction they get out of their hookups is also pride that they got to have someone perfect for a little while. they both get a lot of satisfaction out of pulling the other down from their pedestals, especially Ilya.
