Perhaps the most symbolic part of Jaime’s gift to Brienne is, however, the sword. Named Oathkeeper by Jaime, it is the sword his father gifted to him. Forged from Ned Stark’s sword, Ice, its gift to Brienne as she recommences her search for the Stark daughters is a clear attempt by Jaime to reclaim some honour for a weapon last used in the execution of Stark himself. The gift-giving of this weapon is also deeply symbolic for other reasons, echoing one of the most important aspects in the early career of a knight, being dubbed and belted with knighthood. While Brienne was made a member of Renly’s Kingsguard, he did not dub her a knight and she lacks the true entry into knighthood that dubbing would provide. As such, she is signified again as chivalric “other.” While Jaime does not dub Brienne either at this point, the gift of the sword can be interpreted as an alternative form of dubbing. Early medieval ceremonies, performed before they had developed fully into more complex rituals, allowed for knighthood to be bestowed by the gift of a sword. The sword, therefore, may well represent Brienne’s elevation to knighthood, or at least Jaime’s recognition of her status as a dubbed knight.
