Bishop Waleran Bigod vs Prior Philip
Bishop Waleran vs. Prior Philip I watched "The Pillars of the Earth" so many years ago that I don't remember a thing (except that Tom was incredibly hot), so reading the book is practically like reading a story I've never heard before. I really love the contrast between Prior Philip and Bishop Waleran as two opposite poles of religion.
They are two men of "lowly" origins (an Englishman and an Irishman during the Anglo-Norman era) who owe their positions to one another yet are sworn enemies (over something as "material" as the ownership of a stone quarry). It also surprised me how young they are in the books; I think the TV series made Waleran much older to represent the religious "old guard" and Philip young to represent "new blood," but I much prefer them being contemporaries (or at least very close in age) representing corruption and devotion.
I haven't finished the book yet, but I hope there’s a philosophical or moral confrontation between the two at some point.
Prior Philip of Kingsbridge
(I am afraid that we should ban the friar-style haircut)
Young Philip of Gwynedd; I’m reading the book right now, and I was struck by just how young he actually is. Anyway, I think he’s my favorite character (even though he’s on Stephen’s side, which, incidentally, makes Stephen a great character too).
And I love that he’s a devout, good man, but also a skilled politician.
You’ve got my vote, Philip!
Plus, I’m pretty sure that, at some point, three-quarters of the characters were in love with him.
How do I even begin to think about the future if all I have is my past?

It has inspired me this kinda manuscript page (done for Artfight). I loved the body pillow and posters part so much! 🤣
I hope the quality will turn out okay, I don’t trust Tumblr 😤
Here we have, in order- The quail, who likes to eat poisonous seeds because they were forbidden to him in ancient times and he does what he wants. The peacock, who famously does not decay when he dies. The hoopoe, whose blood creates sleep paralysis demons. And the rooster, who I guess is called a cock because of all birds he's the only eunuch. Idk, medieval monks are weird as hell. Anyway, this all comes from this 1175 Bestiary.

Tried to do some Waleran sketches. I have trouble drawing him consistently, especially when I change brushes. I know I should draw him with a tonsure, but I could bring myself to do it yet. Also the one in the corner with long hair is supposed to be him genderbent.

Thinking of what the people of Kingsbridge would do in a Modern AU. I don't have a plot or anything, but I'm just thinking of what their lives might look like in the modern world.
I feel like Philip would still be involved with the church somehow, since he has a calling for that, but he'd probably also run a non-profit organization to help people, all while trying to raise the funds to rebuild the local cathedral. I don't think Francis would still be a priest though. That seemed like a choice he made in the 12th century because he wasn't suited for monastery life and that was his only other option. He'd probably pursue a different career, but I'm not yet sure what exactly.
Tom would probably be an architect and both Jack and Alfred would follow in his footsteps, though only Jack would excel at it.
Ellen would run a small business of tarot readings and witchy remedies. Aliena would also run a business, starting with wool sweaters (since she was in the wool trade), but she'd quickly expand to many more products.
William Hamleigh and Walter would have an alpha male podcast, trying to lure people into pyramid schemes.
Last but not least, Waleran would probably be committing white collar crimes and climbing some corporate ladder.
Have you read the name of the rose???
1. I absolutely adore medieval studies.
2. I love Umberto Eco
!Especially! Baudolino, The Name of the Rose, and The Prague Cemetery
And Foucault’s Pendulum too
3. So, naturally, the answer is yes.
(if you love The Name of the Rose, you absolutely have to read Baudolino)
old arts huh
(books and other media about monks and nuns are my guilty pleasure)
