He knew that Gill loved Molly. In fact, he had told Gale so.
Well, not exactly. It was long before Gale and Molly started dating when the mayor’s son entered his shop. The straight-laced man had never visited him before, so his presence had been surprising. It was even more surprising when Gill asked to see what was in Molly’s heart, his nose upturned haughtily in order to hide the embarrassed flush of his cheeks. He had left moments later after learning that Molly held only platonic feelings for him. At that time, Gale had just begun his friendship with Molly, so he had found the experience to only be mildly amusing. But now…
Molly’s grateful disposition, bright-eyed and smiling, cast an odd feeling of guilt upon Gale. It had quelled some of the rising envy in his mind, making him realize how foolish he was for his jealous thoughts. After all, he was her fiance, not Gill.
Yet, it was not her he was worried about.
The two ate their dinner, chatting leisurely and getting warm from the coziness of the house and the heady wine. Though he was having a good time, Gale’s thoughts continuously turned to the diplomatic man walking Molly home. Holding her hand. Embracing her. Kissing- Gale placed his second glass of wine down. His imagination was getting the best of him, and alcohol was only fueling the fire. Why was he acting so childish?
The wizard peered at Molly, who had paused in their discussion to take a bite of her food. Taking this chance to speak, he asked as nonchalantly as he could, “Did you go to the circus with Gill..? I sensed his presence earlier.”
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ The small talk her and Gale exchanged was a nice change of pace after another hectic day on the farm. Molly’s soul always felt at ease when she was in his presence. She could never tell if it was just the Wizard’s magical aura, or the love she felt for him that made her relax… Maybe both.
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ As the two continued to speak, the young rancher couldn’t help but notice something… off, about her fiance. He seemed out of it; he was disappearing into his thoughts more than his normal amount that evening. But Molly chose not to comment on it. After all, he may have just been tired after a long day of studying.
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Pushing locks of her chestnut hair behind her ear, the brunette attempted another taste of her soup before Gale asked the one question she didn’t want to hear that night.
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Molly froze for a moment, gathering her thoughts before she answered. Setting down her spoon, she lifted her eyes to meet his gaze. “I-I met him there,” She clarified, releasing a breath.
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ “We spent some time together looking at the animals, then he offered to walk me home. It was very kind of him to do so,” She smiled small, shifting her gaze from Gale back to her meal. Reaching to take another sip of her wine, the farmer hoped her fiance would take her word and move on to another topic of discussion.
