Sydney Harrington and Münchausen by Internet
Some of you may remember a girl named “Sydney Harrington" who had a presence on tumblr, specifically in the Jack’s Mannequin/Something Corporate community. She was 20 years old, a college student, a huge Andrew McMahon fan, loved cats, and said she had had leukemia twice in the past and was always in and out of the hospital.
Some of her past URLs were syd-vicious-xoxo, sydandthemoon, and plugmywiresin. She also had a boyfriend, friends, and cousins who some of us were familiar with: Remy, Lux, Vita, Sara, Jessica, Margaret, Kellen, Ben, Katie, etc.
Sydney was someone that I personally had been friends with since early 2011. We talked nearly every day and I considered her to truly be one of my closest friends, although we had never met in person, nor had she ever talked to me on the phone or agreed to video chat. Despite that, I, and many friends of mine, confided in her with many things. Every time she got sick, we would be so worried we’d be in tears.
One week this March, I noticed that she stopped responding to my texts. I got concerned and went to check her social media sites, and noticed that everything was gone. I panicked, thinking something awful had happened to her. I went to check the pages of her close friends, and they were all gone as well. I tried to call her cell phone, and it was disconnected. I tried to call the number I had for her friend we knew as Lux, but she didn’t answer, so I left a voicemail, in tears.
I started doing some internet research to contact some of her college friends to see if she was okay. I assumed worst case scenario - to be blunt, that she had gotten sick and died - so I wanted to reach her roommates and sorority sisters as soon as possible to figure out what was going on.
In the research I did to find contact information for her real life friends, I found out that the redheaded girl in the photos we saw was indeed named Sydney, but had a different last name - one I had never heard before. When I contacted her and her sorority sisters, they had no idea who I or any of my friends were. The girl who many of us knew as “Sydney Harrington" was actually a girl who we have probably never spoken to in our lives. There is a girl, or several people, behind the girl we knew as “Sydney Harrington," but it was not the girl who we had seen in the photos for all these years.
Through extensive research over the past 4 months, we have found the main culprit behind “Sydney Harrington." She was actually someone who claimed to know “Sydney" in real life, who I was also internet friends with. We believe there may be more people behind it as well, seeing as how elaborate the scheme was - a phone number just for this fake girl (an iPhone, as crazy as that is), multiple social networking sites for her and all of her “friends," regularly updated Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr accounts, etc.
My intention in writing this was to let you all know why “Sydney Harrington" dropped off the face of the earth. Many of you have asked us if she is okay, and you all deserve to have answers. So here goes: the girl in the photos, is she okay? Yes, she is perfectly fine, but we don’t know that girl. But the girl behind “Sydney Harrington," who we all spoke to and loved? She is clearly a sick individual, with a problem of Münchausen by Internet. No one ever had cancer. No one was in and out of the hospital. These were just a few of the lies.
Perhaps the saddest part of all of this is that I’m sure all of you who were friends with this girl would have still been friends with her even if she had had a different name, face, and story. We weren’t friends with her because she was the “cancer girl," we were friends with her because she was a sweet girl and a good friend to us.
I could do what the girl behind “Sydney Harrington" deserves and expose her. I could tell you her name, post a photo, and publicly call her out on it. But she is obviously a sick and lonely individual who needs help. So please, get help and stop hurting people on the internet.
If any of you have questions, I will answer what I can, but out of respect for the real Sydney and anyone involved, I do not want to divulge too much information. However, I do understand that many of you cared about this girl, which is why I am posting this for all of you.
Heads up for my followers.
(Also, in case people are wondering, catsnotcancer knows, feels extremely betrayed and would appreciate some privacy right now.)
Though, it may not be the response they were hoping for. *grin*
SCATTER, MY CHILDREN. LET YOUR TUMBLR POWERS ACTIVATE.
”we find that in Sanford, FL, a self appointed “watchman” with no police powers and zero law enforcement training walks free after murdering a teenager. But, incidents of suspicious killings of Black males in America followed by no punishment is not new. The status of Black males in American society remains clear: Expendable. Did the nation pause in June 2010 after ten Black males were shot dead and 51 wounded in just 3 days in Chicago? Does anyone believe there would be no national outcry if the victims were from any other group? The famous incidents are met with justifications — even in cases where the victims were completely innocent.
In 1984, it was Bernie Goetz. Goetz shot four Black males on a New York City subway after one asked for five dollars. All were unarmed. There was no physical altercation. Goetz shot all four, paralyzing one, saying he feared he’d be mugged. Eighteen months before Goetz said, “the only way we’re going to clean up this street is to get rid of the spics and niggers.” Goetz and his defenders said the shootings were justified because of fear.
In 1999, it was Amadou Diallo, 23. Diallo had no criminal record and no weapon. New York Police mistook Diallo for a rape suspect. An officer at the scene yelled “gun” and 41 shots were fired by four plain clothes officers. Diallo had no gun, only his wallet. All were acquitted.
In 2000, it was Patrick Dorismond, 26. Dorismond, a security guard, was shot and killed by a NYPD plain clothes police officer after being approached by undercover officers who asked where they could buy marijuana. An argument ensued and Dorismond was shot and killed. No one was charged. A grand jury found the shooting was an accident.
In 2003, it was Ousmane Zongo, 24. Zongo was shot and killed by an undercover police officer dressed as a mailman during a raid for counterfeit goods. He was unarmed and had no criminal record. The officer was convicted of criminally negligent homicide but served no jail time.
In 2004, it was Tim Stansbury, 19. Stansbury was shot in a rooftop stairwell by a police officer who admitted he was startled and pulled the trigger accidentally. Stansbury had no gun and no criminal record. A grand jury found the shooting was accidental. “There appears to be no justification for the shooting,” Chief Ray Kelly said at the time.
In 2006, it was Sean Bell, 23. Once again, a cop at the scene yelled “gun” – but no gun was found. Plain clothes NY City Police fired 50 rounds at three males: Two Black, one Hispanic. Bell was shot four times and died on his wedding day. He had no criminal record. No one was found guilty.
In 2009, it was Oscar Grant, 23. Grant was shot in the back and killed by BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle. Mehserle feared Grant was reaching for a weapon as he held him face down on a subway platform. Grant had no weapon. Grant had previously served time for drug possession. The Justice Department opened a case against Mehserle. He would serve less than a year in jail.
Last month, Ramarley Graham, 18, was shot to death in the bathroom of his mother’s house after NY police gave chase. A plain clothes narcotics officer believed Graham had a gun. No gun was found. Graham had been previously arrested for marijuana possession and burglary.
The combined jail time after seven incidents? Seven dead = 23 months. In every incident, the absence of involvement by the pursuer would have meant seven people would be alive today. What do all the cases have in common? The victims: All Black males. All unarmed. As the City of New York continues to pay out millions in wrongful death suits one wonders: Does our society care when innocent people who also happen to be Black are killed for doing nothing? Diallo, Bell, Dorismond, Stansbury, Zongo were not engaged in unlawful activity.
Add another the list: Trayvon Martin. This time by a pretend-cop with too much time on his hands.
Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee Jr., like so many before him, defended the handling of the Martin case. “The hysteria, the media circus, it’s just crazy. It’s the craziest damn thing I’ve ever seen, and it’s sad. It’s sad for the city of Sanford, the police department, because I know in my heart we did a good job.”
It’s sad alright. The Justice Department should be in touch with Chief Lee soon. Rev. Al Sharpton is set to have another march regarding a case of an unarmed innocent Black male who is dead for no reason.

TW: Racism, murder
Let’s not forget these people either:
In 2003, it was Orlando Barlow, who was shot from 50 feet away with an assault rifle in front of four Las Vegas police officers by officer Brian Hartman while surrendering on his knees. Hartman argued that he feared Barlow was feigning surrender and about to grab a gun. Barlow was unarmed; jury ruled the fatal shooting was “excusable." Hartman later resigned from the force a month before a federal probe uncovered that he and other officers printed T-Shirts labeled "BDRT" which stood for “Baby’s Daddy Removal Team" and “Big Dogs Run Together." The probe also found that Hartman and other officers had used excessive force during two separate investigations and lied about it. Their punishment: the possibility of losing their jobs, The Las Vegas Sun reports.
In 2005, it was Travares McGill, 16, who was killed by two white security guards. One of the guards had testified that Travares was coming at him in his car, but evidence showed the bullet that killed Travares hit him in the middle of the back and that the guard kept firing even after the car was no longer headed towards him. This happened in Sanford, Florida - the same community Trayvon Martin was killed in.
In 2005, it was the Danziger Bridge shootings, where New Orleans police officers shot six unarmed people, killing two. One of the men killed was 40-year-old Ronald Madison, a severely mentally disabled man who was shot in the back, his hands in plain view while he ran, held no weapon, posing no threat. After the shooting of Madison, “Sergeant A" (one of the officers involved) ran from the other side of the bridge. He proceeded to kick and stomp Madison as he lay bleeding to death from his fatal wound.
In 2009, it was Kiwane Carrington, 15, who was killed by officers responding to reports of a break-in. Kiwane and a friend were permitted guests in the back yard of some one they knew. The officer who killed Kiwane was suspended for 30 days without pay.
In 2009, it was Victor Steen, 17, who was killed when a police officer attempted to stop him for “looking suspicious". Victor. who was unarmed, fled on his bike, and the officer chased him, attempting to hit him with his Taser while the chase was occurring. At some point, Victor fell. The police cruiser hit him, dragging him on the ground and killing him. A judge ruled the officer had committed no crime.
In 2010, it was Steven Eugene Washington, 27, who was killed when gang enforcement officers saw him “manipulating something in his waist area." Steven was autistic, unarmed and had never had any run-ins with the police.
In 2011, it was Jimmell Cannon, 13, who was killed when police officers mistook him for a gunman they were searching for in response to a report of shots fired.
Just a week or two ago, it was Wendell Allen, 20, who was killed by officers executing a warrant on his house. He was unarmed at the time of the shooting. He had previously been arrested for possessing marijuana with intent to distribute. There were 5 children in the house at the time of the shooting, ranging in ages from 1 -14.
How many names did I miss? How many more names are we going to have to add to the list? What will it take for us to wake up? How much more blood will be spilled before we own up to the fact that racism is still alive and well in America, that being “colorblind" has not worked to stop the death and the pain?
Sadly, it has come time to update this post.
On Jan. 29, 2010, it was Aaron Campbell, 25, who was shot while walking backwards towards police with his hands locked behind his head. Campbell had been suicidal over the death of his younger brother, and his girlfriend’s aunt had called the police to do a welfare check on the family knowing Campbell’s mental state and the fact that he owned a gun. The city of Portland settled a civil rights lawsuit relating to his death for $1.2 million. Initially, the officer who killed Campbell, Ron Frashour, was deemed to have used “inappropriate force" and was fired from the Portland police force. However, the Portland Police Association appealed the ruling and won. The city of Portland was ordered to reinstate Frashour. Portland Mayor Sam Adams decided to reinstate Frashour, pay him nearly 2 years of back pay, and place him on paid leave…all while he fought the ruling to reinstate Frashour to his job in the first place. Frashour never faced any criminal charges.
On June 5, 2010, it was Tyrone Brown, 32, who was shot by an off-duty police officer with his service weapon after a confrontation outside a club. Brown had apologized was attempting to walk away from the confrontation when he was shot six times.
On February 11, 2011, it was Travis McNeil, 28, who was shot in the head during a traffic stop when he reached to retrieve a fallen cell phone. His passenger, Kareem Williams, was also wounded in the incident. While the officer who shot McNeil and Williams was fired, he was cleared of any criminal acts and he never faced any charges.
On July 18, 2011, it was Alonzo Ashley, 29, who was killed when police at the Denver Zoo tasered him. He was trying to cool his head under a water fountain when security guards told him to stop. Ashley became “agitated" and police were called. While the death was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner, no charges were filed against the eight officers involved.
On March 24, 2012, it was Kendrec McDade, 19, who was shot in Pasadena, CA after two officers who were responding to a report of a robbery began to chase him. After one officer had already shot McDade, the other shot him again. He had nothing but a cell phone in his pocket. Prosecutors ruled the shooting was justified.
Also on March 24, 2012, it was Ervin Jefferson, 18, this time in Atlanta, GA. Jefferson was shot by two security guards while trying to protect his sister. The guards were arrested for impersonating police officers, but I was unable to find any information on charges relating to Ervin’s death.
On September 2, 2012, it was Mario Romero, 23, who was shot by police officers while sitting in a car outside of his own home. Officers pulled up to the car and shined their lights into it, ordering Romero and his passenger, brother-in-law Joseph Johnson, 21, to put up their hands, though they never identified themselves as police. The police claim that Johnson put his hands up but that Romero opened the car door and appeared to be exiting. The cops maintain that they saw a gun in Romero’s waistband as he was exiting while simultaneously claiming that their view of Romero was obscured by the open car door. However, a witness to the shooting, Cynquita Martin, Romero’s sister, said the officers never gave the men a chance to put their hands up and began shooting immediately after ordering them to put their hands up. The shooting was ruled as "self-defense."
On November 29, 2012, it was Timothy Russell, 43, and Malissa Williams, 30, who died after 13 officers fired 137 rounds into their car after a chase. Radio chatter during the chase had warned the driver was “waving a gun" out of the car window, but no gun or shell casings were ever found either in the car or on the chase route. 12 of the 13 officers who opened fire were white.
On March 9, 2013, it was Kimani Gray, 16, who was shot by NYPD officers after they saw him “acting suspiciously." While a .38-caliber pistol was recovered from the scene, witnesses stand by their claim that Kimani had no gun.
Sadly, I could keep going. The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement has identified 313 extrajudicial killings of Black people in 2012 alone. In 44% of these cases, the victim had no weapon on their person at the time of their death.
So I ask again:
How many names did I miss? How many more names are we going to have to add to the list? What will it take for us to wake up? How much more blood will be spilled before we own up to the fact that racism is still alive and well in America, that being “colorblind" has not worked to stop the death and the pain?
DOMA got repealed. Yes, great. Now, let’s talk about how 70% of queerphobic murders involve people of color. Let’s talk about how trans women of color can’t even defend themselves on the street without ending up behind bars like CeCe McDonald.
Oh, and while we’re at it, let’s talk bout how voting rights for people of color in this country are not that important to defend according to the Supreme Court.
What’s The Worst Thing You Could Say To A Congresswoman Who Lost Her Legs In Battle? Um, THIS.
An IRS contractor hurt his foot playing football in military prep school. He never served in the actual military. Then one day, decades later, he used it to get preferred treatment in military contracts. Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), who lost both her legs and still could lose her arm from combat injuries, felt that this might just be a touch inappropriate. It gets amazing around 4:30.
Daaaaaaaamn.
I'm firmly anti-war/anti-military, but she just ripped him a new one.
Four for you, Tammy Duckworth. You go, Tammy Duckworth.
Protest in Chicago on Saturday 2013 June 29!
What We Will Be Doing:
Activists will be converging to form a discordant contingent in the Chicago Dyke March to draw attention to the fact that the Chicago Dyke March Collective (CDMC) has failed to honor promises made to Veronika Boundless, a trans woman, in response to safety concerns she and her allies had brought to the collective. These include a promise to give Veronika, an award-winning educator, work as a facilitator on a teach-in—a project for which Veronika has already spent her own money.
What’s at Stake:
In 2011 CDMC read a statement to Dyke March attendees, saying that it was working to address its previous failures “to make sure nothing like [what happened to Veronika] happens again”. As long as we do not hold CDMC to its word, we are telling CDMC, “It is okay if you lie to us.”
At a time when trans women are among the most unemployed and underemployed people in the US, when workers have fewer protections to keep their employers from demanding that they do more for less, and when educators in Chicago face an uncertain future, the failure to give trans women promised work in progressive spaces sets a precedent that has the potential to deny trans women more of the resources we need for necessities such as food and health care.
Other organizations in the Midwest imitated CDMC’s trans-inclusion model, which is arguably problematic for making Dyke March a space that does not focus on any women (including trans women)*, at a time when CDMC recognized that the collective had shown gross negligence regarding Veronika’s safety but nevertheless failed to engage her in dialogue, much less invite her into conversations with people who sought to model their organizations after CDMC. If our voices are not heard, there is a risk that people throughout the Midwest will continue to uncritically create queer or trans spaces to conform to CDMC’s policies, some of which appear to fall far short with regards to trans women.
If you would like to join us, please meet us at Shan Restaurant (5060 N. Sheridan) at 2:30 PM. If you are late and do not find us there, please meet us at Margate Park Grove 2, which is accessible at the intersection of Argyle St. and Marine Dr. Look for people with signs calling out CDMC and holding a transgender pride flag.
If you have any questions, you can e-mail me at [email protected]. I will check e-mail on the day of the march to make sure we are not missing anyone who is trying to find us.
Please spread the word to Chicago folks who care about workers and transfeminine people!
*In the twenty-first century trans women are increasingly denied access to women’s spaces because they transition into spaces that are for “women and trans people” (and are thus no longer women’s spaces) and often do more to accommodate trans men than trans women (who have historically faced more violence than trans men when entering lesbian spaces). CDMC has taken the unusual trajectory of first explicitly making Dyke March a space that focused on all women, including “transgendered (sic) women” (as it said in a 2002 mission statement), before adopting the mission statement it has now.

This past Memorial Day weekend, while walking home from work, twin brothers Aaron and Kristin were brutally attacked around 3 am Sunday in the LES by approximately 10-12 men. Despite eyewitnesses and surveillance video of the attack, the NYPD were quick to label the attack “gang related” and close the case without any investigation. When Aaron’s girlfriend, Cipriana followed up with police a day after the attack she was told that the twins said they did not want an investigation and would “handle it themselves”. Knowing this was untrue, Cipriana encouraged Aaron to contact the police and ask them to pursue the investigation.
When Aaron spoke with police and explained that they did in fact want an investigation he was told he could “face jail time for lying”. It wasn’t until Cipriana took to her blog, urbanbushbabes.com to write about the attack and the lack of police investigation that the press took note (NY Post & Fox 5) and the police suddenly changed their tune. Now the NYPD claims the case was never closed and has labeled it a hate crime.
We really need your help to get this story out and to get justice for the twins. Here’s how you can help: • Sign the change.org petition to hold the NYPD & Internal Affairs Bureau Liable for their misconduct in the handling of Aaron and Kristin’s case • Click here to tweet about the petition using the #justice4twins hashtag
• Reblog and share this post
• Tweet this story to media influencers like @MHarrisPerry @TheRevAl @ClutchMagazine @blackvoices and @thinkprogress

FULL CALL-OUT TO CANCEL RACHEL IVEY'S SPEAKING DATES
PLEASE REPOST
Please email and call these spaces and let them know that you are unhappy that they are allowing Rachel Ivey of Deep Green Resistance to speak at their space as part of the Resistance Rewritten speaking tour. Rachel Ivey considers trans women to be men; equates being transgender with being “trans racial”; and is friends with Cathy Brennan, a well-known transmisogynist who has publicly outed trans youth, filed lawsuits against her critics, and campaigned against gender identity protections. More on Rachel Ivey and DGR’s transphobia here. We have included a sample email below.

——————————————————————— To whom it may concern, I am writing because I saw that [space name] is hosting an event on the Resistance Rewritten tour featuring speaker Rachel Ivey of Deep Green Resistance. I am asking that you cancel the event due to Rachel Ivey’s oppressive beliefs about transgender people. Rachel Ivey considers transgender women to be men; equates being transgender with a white person saying they are a person of color; and is friends with Cathy Brennan, a well-known anti-trans blogger who has publicly outed transgender youth, filed lawsuits against her critics, and campaigned against gender identity protections. Deep Green Resistance, the organization for which Ivey is speaking, has as its official policy that trans women are men. This is unacceptable. I urge you to cancel this event. Transgender women are some of the most at-risk people in our society for violence, harassment, and murder. People like Rachel Ivey wish to obscure the intense violence done to transgender women, and indeed reinforce trans oppression. Boycott Monsanto: A Simple List of Companies to Avoid
#MarchAgainstMonsanto
That’s damn near my whole cabinet
^^^^^^^^^
Okay.
This list.
This list is hella problematic.
Wanna know why?
It very handily tells you what NOT to eat, but ignores the very real fact that this list contains basically everything poor people eat to survive. The foods on this list are cheap, and readily available most everywhere, even food deserts.
And, I mean, yeah, there's a reason why they are cheap and available everywhere, but that still doesn't negate the fact that you're pretty much telling poor folk "Fuck you for supporting Monsanto!" when you're not giving them any options that are both as readily available and cost around the same.
laugh sobbing at the memory of my early punk/pit days.
Laugh sobbing right along with my slothspouse.
The number of times I used the excuse of the pit to fuck up Nazis...*sigh* The good ol' days.
I WAS HERE!
There.
Whatever.
