Mary I's Fight For The Throne
9th July - Mary writes to the Privy Council
Mary continues sending out letters to rally support amongst the nobility. She also writes directly to the Privy Council, ordering them to proclaim her queen:
My lords, We greet you well and have received sure advertisement that our dearest brother the King and late sovereign lord is departed to God. Marry, which news, how they be woeful unto our hearts, He wholly knoweth to whose will and pleasure we must and humbly submit us and our will. But in this lamentable case, that is to wit now after his departure and death, concerning the Crown and governance of this Realm of England with the title of France and all things thereunto belonging, what has been provided by act of Parliament and the testament and last will of our death father – besides other circumstances advancing our right – the Realm know and all the world knoweth. The rolls and records appear by authority of the king our said father and the king our said brother and the subjects of this Realm, as we verily trust that there is no good true subject that is or can or will pretend to be ignorant hereof. And of our part, as God shall aid and strengthen us, we have ourselves caused and shall cause our right and title in this behalf to be published and proclaimed accordingly. And, albeit this matter being so weighty, the manner seemeth strange that our said brother, dying upon Thursday at night last past, we hitherto had no knowledge from you thereof. Yet we considered your wisdom and prudence to be such that having eftsoon among you debated, pondered, and well weighed this present case with our estate and your estate, the commonwealth, and all your honours, we shall and may conceive great hope and trust and much assurance in your loyalty and service, and that you will like noble men work the best. Nevertheless, we are not ignorant of your consultations and provisions forcible, there with assembled and prepared – by whom and to what end God and you know, and nature can but fear some evil. But be it that some consideration politic of some whatsoever reason hath hastily moved you thereto, yet doubt you not, my lords, we can take all these your doings in gracious part, being also right ready to remit and fully pardon the same freely, to eschew blood-shed and vengeance of those that can or will amend. Trusting also assuredly you will take and accept this grace and virtue in such good part as appeareth, and that we shall [not] be enforced to use the service of other our true subjects and friends which in this our just and rightful cause God, in whom our whole affiance is, shall send us. Wherefore, my lords, we require you and charge you, for that our allegiance which you owe to God and us, that, for your honour and the surety of your persons, you employ your selves and forthwith upon receipt hereof cause our right and title to the Crown and government of this Realm to be proclaimed in our City of London and such other places as to your wisdoms shall seem good and as to this case appertaineth, not failing hereof, as our very trust in in you. And this letter signed with our hand shall be your sufficient warrant. Given under our signet at our Manor of Kenninghall, the 9th July 1553 Mary the Queen 1
Her servant, Thomas Hungate, offers to ride to London and deliver it. While he rides off, she also writes to Edward Hastings -
Right trusty and well beloved cousin, we greet you well; Advertising you, that to our great grief and heaviness of heart, we have received woeful news of advertisement that the King, our dearest brother, and late sovereign Lord, is departed to God’s mercy, upon Thursday last, at night, by means whereof the right of the crown of this realm of England, with the governance thereof, and the title of France, is justly come unto us by God’s providence; as appears by such provisions as have been made by act of Parliament, and the testament and will of our late dearest father King Henry VIII, for our preferement in this behalf, whereby you are now discharged of your duty of allegiance to our said brother the King, and unburdened and set at large, to observe, execute or obey any commandment heretofore or hereafter to be addressed unto you by letter or otherwise, from or in the name, or by colour of the authority of the same King, our late brother; and only to us and our person are and owe to be true liegeman. Wherefore, right trusty and beloved, for the special trust and affiance we have in you, and as you be a nobleman, we require, command and charge you to have a heart and eye vigilant and fully bent to God’s glory, our honour, and surety of our person, and the universal quietness of the whole realm; especially of those in our counties of Middlesex and Bucks, where your habitation and mansion is: and that ye stir not in a forcible array, at the commandment, call or bidding, by letters or otherwise, of any person or persons whatsoever except for us your sovereign Lady; and except also if any wilful, as God forbid will dare and attempt otherwise violently and by force, that shall to you seem prejudical unto us, our right and title aforesaid. For the prevention of which cause, and also to the intent you shall and may be ready to serve us at our command, hereafter to be addressed unto you, we will you shall, to the best of your person, fortify and prepare yourself. And this our letter, signed with our hand, shall be your warrant and discharge in this behalf. Willing you further not to doubt, but that we shall in the balance of equity, reason and justice consider your endeavour, and also employ our own person and study accordingly; and so prosecute you with such our favour and grace as shall advance God’s glory and the commonweal, to your comfort, with the help of God, who have us all in his blessed keeping. Given at our manor of Kenninghall, the 9th of July in the year of our lord God 1553 2
Her servant, Thomas Wharton, is sent to his brother in law, the nearby Earl of Sussex, to recruit him to their cause, however the earl is "falsely convinced by Lord Robert, Northumberland's third son, that the king was still alive." 3 Following an unsuccessful attempt to bring him over to their side, Wharton only just escapes from "an ambush laid for him by the servants of Lord Robert while he was journeying back to the queen." 4
In the evening, the town council at Great Yarmouth send bailiffs and gentlemen to "ride immediately unto my Lady Mary’s Grace to Kenninghall to know her Grace’s pleasure concerning her letter to us sent this present night signed with her hand”. 5
Meanwhile in London...
Having been recuperating in Chelsea from sickness (possibly related to what the Duchess of Northumberland told her), Jane Grey is summoned to Syon Palace and told she is now Queen of England, per the last will of King Edward VI. She "greatly bewailed myself for the death of so noble a prince, and at the same time, turned myself to God, humbly praying and beseeching him, that if what was given to me was rightly and lawfully mine, his divine Majesty would grant me such grace and spirit that I might govern it to his glory and service, and to the advantage of this realm." 6
The Captain of the Royal Guard summons all the archers and publicly informs them of King Edward's death, ordering them to repair to the Tower tomorrow to swear to abide his will. The Lady Mary is "not fit to succeed because of the divorce that had separated her father, King Henry, from her mother, Queen Catherine". 7 She is "unable to administer the kingdom, being a woman and of the old religion." 8

Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn in a deleted scene from The Tudors season 2
In this scene, a pregnant Anne asks her cousin Madge Shelton if she consoled the king as Anne told her to. When Madge says yes, Anne reassures her that she is not angry with her. It becomes awkward, and Anne tells her to leave. She then caresses an empty cradle.

(odio i carrelli)
(e mi fanno sentire sempre ridicola
ci sono alcune azioni che
semplicemente mi rifiuto di fare
perché mi sembrano strane
o troppo
o mi fanno sentire a disagio
i crave so much
sono non polli, semplici
pezzi rimescolati di funghi
soia o piselli che
sembrano un pollo
hanno la consistenza di un pollo
hanno il sapore di un pollo
e si cuociono come un pollo
ma non sono polli
ci ho fatto l’abitudine a questi cibi sostitutivi
ultra processati ma non me ne frega
che soddisfano la mia voglia di carne
prima non riuscivo
neanche a mandarli giù
adesso ne consumo a quintali
anche solo di veggie burger
con annesse obbligatorie patatine
i pasti sono diventati molto meno
al volo, anche se
in realtà non più di tanto
basta ingegnarsi
un panino all’ultimo minuto
pochi quei primi anni senza traumi
era una mancanza bisognava rimediare
e il laboratorio mi ha presa
e spennata e ha fatto in modo
di far crescere la mia carne
che poi non compra nessuno
e marcisce
tutti i miei amici hanno il loro
bel pollaio o aia
partner e uova e razzolamento
mensilmente retribuito
ed è vero, mi rendo conto
che potrebbe andarmi peggio
ma in tutto questo ben pochi
potevano tirarmi fuori da questo
laboratorio e non l’hanno fatto
manca sempre quel piccolo scarto
ma me ne sbatto)
il mio destino è produrre
dal mio corpo
carne che imputridisce
passa inosservata come lo sono
sempre stata
nè carne nè vegetale
una non animale
che finisce neppure
al supermercato
non non essere
una cosa che non è cosa
pollo da laboratorio
chi potrebbe amarlo
o salvarlo?
sono in fondo ad ogni lista
di priorità e ho pensato
più volte, anzi, lo penso anche ora
che potrei buttarmi giù dal tavolo
o aprirmi la gola con un bisturi
e sarebbe finita
ma ci sono i giorni belli, balordi
quando mi dimentico di essere
legata zampe e piedi
e tutto sembra andare bene ma
in sottofondo ronza
la luce al neon
romba, il motore della
mietitrebbia e prendo in considerazione
che potrei fare un salto anche lì
ma resisto
non so bene come o per chi o per cosa
sarà la volontà di cui parlava schopenhauer
potri dire che yoga e pranic healing
e poesie mi hanno salvata e cambiata
come la mia vita e sarebbe
una perfetta fetta di versi
da prima pagina
da like, da mille interazioni
da sorriso trentadue denti
ma non è così
io arranco
io sono cavia
io vado avanti
e intanto
cerco a non pensare al
fatto che marcisco
stavolta hanno straccetti vegan
in offerta!
life gives you lemons
or asprgrs
yes, the ones to cook in a pan
with eggs,
as prOOf that even if they try
the asprgr person doesn't know how to make an omelet
alOne, they collapse like a supernOva
and I’d like to see, the universe without stars
beautiful as the bottom of encrusted pans
like the bottom of batters, and it’s Easter already
and what we would need is, grated on top
a lemon zest.
the green-grocer woman gives you lemons
and don't you forget them: MA'AM THE LEMONS MA'AAAAM
you ordered them yourself before incarnation
as protection for the asprgr routine
as a projection of karma
as little indecision much
determination, to make evolution,
in the total confusion, in the constant
pacing through the streets,
the obsessive reproduction of random
sounds and noises,
in impossible cities like scartagine* where you discard
the borage, the unwanted, unrequested gifts
along with the asprgrs, while
frenagain* is the opposite of acceleragain
and the nun's alcOve is just outside town
impossible cities dotted with undrinkable eggs
not being able to poke a hole in them and whip like crazy
the asprgrs cut with precision
and I speak an impossible language,
I don't want them anymore, these lemons,
but I have to stock up on them just like asprgrs
in a context unaware of other people's problems
because it’s not a matter of a label
or a cookie-cutter or whatever it is
it could have been called jack-robinson
the story wouldn't have changed,
it’s not like a sect, you don't win a t-shirt
and if you think by now "everyone is" asprgr
it means access to diagnosis and the right to support, ma'am karen
it means that if I have continuous panic attacks
of mechanical response, of misunderstandings and regret
of a balanced mood, trailing emotions,
fatigue tasting of arsenic
and the fact that I am understanding absolutely fucking nothing
of what is happening and what you are telling me
about my continuous not understanding jack shit
waiting for life to clear up
while suddenly, it rains again
the gOOd news?
dinner is ready.
on spring.

la vita ti dà i limoni
oppure gli asprgr
sì, quelli da fare in padella
da sOla, collassa come supernOva
e vorrei vedere, l’universo senza stelle
li hai ordinati tu prima dell’incarnazione
come a protezione di routine asprgr
come a proiezione del karma
come poca indecisione molta
determinazione, a fare evoluzione,
nella confusione totale, nella costante
deambulazione per le strade,
la riproduzione ossessiva di suoni
e rumori casuali,
assieme agli asprgr, mentre
avrebbe potuto chiamarsi pincopallino
Lab Chickens
(ugly autobiographical)
between the refrigerated aisles
dangling from my hands a bag or a basket
(I hate shopping carts)
(and they always make me feel ridiculous
there are some actions that
I simply refuse to do
because they seem strange to me
or too much
or they make me feel uncomfortable
like making myself a hot meal, alone, for lunch)
I look for lab chickens
among the items
they aren't real chickens,
I've been a vegetarian for two years,
they are chicken illusions
that right now
*i crave so much*
they are non-chickens, simple
shuffled pieces of mushrooms
soy or peas that
look like chicken
have the texture of chicken
taste like chicken
and cook like chicken
but they aren't chicken
I've gotten used to these substitute foods
ultra-processed but I don't give a fuck
that satisfy my meat cravings
before I couldn't
even swallow them
now I consume tons of them
even just veggie burgers
with the annexed mandatory fries
meals have become much less
on the fly, even though
not really that much
you just have to be resourceful
a last-minute sandwich
works out great anyway
lately I've been eating less and
I fluctuate from craving the most disparate street food
to voluntarily staying
fasting because no food in the fridge
is *safe* or because
as I was saying, I can't cook
the lab chicken was me
for twenty years
few were those first trauma-free years
it was a lack that needed fixing
and the lab took me
and plucked me and made sure
to grow my flesh
which then nobody buys
and rots
all my friends have their
nice chicken coop or barnyard
partner and eggs and monthly
paid scratching around
and it's true, I realize
that it could be worse for me
but in all of this, very few
could pull me out of this
lab and they didn't
that tiny gap is always missing
and now few hear me peeping
from the cot under the white neon light
because I bored everyone to death
talking about my suffering
that won't go away
how many times they told me I would
become a swan
that I too would have a partner and eggs
and monthly paid scratching around
but it didn't happen
it won't happen
I've had my time and youth is slipping away
(and this rhyme is ugly cliché
but I don't give a shit)
my destiny is to produce
from my body
flesh that putrefies
goes unnoticed just like I
have always been
neither meat nor vegetable
a non-animal
that doesn't even end up
at the supermarket
non-non-being
a thing that is not a thing
lab chicken
who could love it
or save it?
I am at the bottom of every priority
list and I've thought
multiple times, actually, I'm thinking it right now
that I could throw myself off the table
or slit my throat with a scalpel
and it would be over
but there are the beautiful, foolish days
when I forget I am
tied hand and foot
and everything seems to be going well but
in the background hums
the neon light
roars, the engine of the
combine harvester and I consider
that I could take a leap in there too
but I resist
I don't really know how or for whom or for what
it must be the will Schopenhauer talked about
I could say that yoga and pranic healing
and poems saved me and changed me
as well as my life and it would be
a perfect slice of verses
front-page material
like-worthy, worth a thousand interactions
a thirty-two-tooth smile
but it's not like that
I trudge
I am a guinea pig
I move forward
and meanwhile
I try not to think about the
fact that I'm rotting
this time they have vegan strips
on sale!
