Red Dwarf is a really nice fandom but, while not wanting to speak for anyone since I am white, it really gives me the ick that (while I do like him a lot) about 70% of the posts in the fandom are about Rimmer in some way and woobifying him. Tbh its why Ive never really interacted with the fandom much because every time I try to join a group, everyone seems to just want to talk about Rimmer but I wanna talk about Lister

And y’know what sucks? I even considered not responding to this ask because of the risk of alienating followers who like him! I agree with you, though — everyone I’ve interacted with has been genuinely lovely but it’s a painful pattern that repeats in all fandoms and to which Red Dwarf’s, pleasant as it is, is no exception. When there’s a white fave, he takes over every tag, every post about other characters… and more specifically, every conversation about a Black character ultimately shifts to being about the white fave. I have the tags for Rimmer and their ship blocked so I only have to see that stuff if I feel like it, and it’s painful to scroll down Lister’s tag and see blocked post after blocked post (I counted 24 in a row a few days ago!) because it seems like nobody can talk about Lister without taking the overwhelming relevance of his relationship to Rimmer as a given. Referring to every protagonist of colour ever when I say his proximity to the white guy isn’t the only interesting thing about him! At the convention the other week they made everyone do a show of hands for their favourite character and I swear it was like 90% for Rimmer and a smattering for everyone else (that may be an exaggeration but in my defence I already felt like I was at a white pride convention with how I could count the other nonwhite attendees on one hand lol). I really appreciate receiving this ask because I’m used to feeling relatively alone in my aversion to fandoms’ overemphasis on white faves. I will say, though, I’ve definitely found people willing to discuss Lister on his own so I wouldn’t give up on finding your group yet!

regarding cutie marks, rimmer was defo a blank flank for SO long and when he finally got it he took it as a sign he was destined to be a space corps high-flier like his family (not quite, young horse….) (i hope you all recognise that planet !!) while lister got his EARLY and didn’t really figure it out most his life but thought it looked Cool. i feel mechs don’t get cutie marks, nor do felis equestrians, so.

i fear this is too niche but i WILL be drawing more 🐴

it is deeply upsetting that season 8 is so very, very bad, because lots of the lister/rimmer stuff is actually really intriguing in terms of: lister is just very clearly pleased to have A Rimmer even if it is not HIS rimmer exactly and so his jokes are quite gentle (for these characters!) and also inviting rimmer in on the joke - like the opening sequence of lister trying to get rimmer to talk to him is SO CHARMING to me. that is a lister who is just delighted by Rimmer’s annoyance! And then you get the “”””””””joke””””””” at the end of the episode and it is like jfc yeah that’s why season 8 has the reputation it has, what is wrong with everyone involved in this.

Maybe its just me, but its SO WEIRD to read modern day references in Red Dwarf novels. Maybe because I read the first books within the last three years, and The Last Humam was already nearly 30 years old.

But Amazon, Google, and Pokémon have all been name dropped and, I don't know, man, it just feels weird.

Ive always loved how 80s Red Dwarf is despite it being set in the future. As someone born in the 2000s it adds this nice distance between Red Dwarf and my real life, where it doesnt feel too real that it makes me cringe, but just real enough as some weird future where technology regressed somehow. I liked that, I wish they would keep it that way

the issue with growing up in the 2000s and 2010s was like there was this really big push toward "accepting your weirdness" overall but they meant like idk wearing mismatched socks or something not being tangibly beyond the norm in any way shape or form

I feel that Lister was originally doomed by the narrative. However in later series he's had opportunities to live elsewhere, including planets and with other people. But he chooses to stay and live on Red Dwarf with his best friends. He's choosing this narrative. So much so he changes his past (time travel) to get there sooner.
