what definitely gets me so bad with smallville clark kent just, like, as a character beat that really compels me is of course it's not just that he's a gaycoded character it's that he's specifically written as "closeted" and that can metaphorically be about being gay or literally about being an alien but that specific struggle of being so deeply closeted -- going from something about yourself that you spend so long trying to deny and lie even to yourself about to fighting through to self acceptance and even eventually being able to find the courage to tell the people within your life and own it as a part of your identity like IS a journey i find deeply compelling, and of course one i never lose empathy in him for, despite all his stumbles along the way
