Lily James for Allure Magazine, August 2018
I think my dad came up with this idea that I should be able to defend myself. He asked me when I was 9, ‘Do you want to do dance or do you want to do karate?’ with a big smile on his face. As a kid, I was like, oh, karate seems to be the most fun out of the two disciplines so I’m going to take that.

I am a bit of a weird case. Here, people perceive me as French and in France, I am half-Asian or sometimes I have heard that I am not Asian enough. There’s always something and I don’t pay attention to anything. I love acting so much. I’m not going to stop at one, ten, twenty people telling me “You’re too much like this” or “You’re not enough like that.” My team is well trained. I tell them “Just get me in the room, get me the audition, even if they’re looking for a blonde American woman,” because once I’m there, maybe I can bring something different and change someone’s mind. I try to force doors. I would never fit a character on paper.
There’s no one better than Meryl Streep. She’s like the greatest actor of all time, probably. I tried to watch all her films from when she was younger, and I watched Mamma Mia about fifty billion times. So it was really intimidating, but also I couldn’t resist the opportunity. It was just too exciting to pass up, just because of my own fear.
I’m a big worrier. I’m quite hard on myself and I’m aware that I’m just learning. I’m never going to be one of those people who are fiercely confident and determined and ambitious. I am all those things but…I’m not. I am what I am, and I think if you start trying to pretend to be a certain way in order to be a movie star, you’re probably going to be unsuccessful.
Get to know me meme: 7/10 favourite tv shows » Lost (2004-2010) “Last week most of us were strangers, but we’re all here now. And god knows how long we’re going to be here. But if we can’t live together, we’re going to die alone.”
Idk about anyone else but I am absolutely living for the moment in Jumanji when Jack Black screamed “YAAAAAS QUEEN” at Karen Gillan
I can’t control their fear. Only my own.
