Salt Lake City International Airport

*James and Chris stumble out of the gate, looking like cave divers emerging from an expedition. 24 hours of almost-missed flights and delays and layovers and entirely too much complimentary coffee later - but here they are, finally. Only a 6 hour car ride from where Church's parents moved a year or so ago. Joy.*

*James' hand itches to reach for Tommy's, but he restrains himself at the last moment when he sees a pair of LDS missionaries across the room in their pressed shirts and crisp ties and remembers where he is. For his part, he's wearing the same ratty tank top and long shorts he'd gotten on the bus in. Poptarts isn't much better, though he, of course, manages to still look amazing.*

*They look around for a moment, then Tommy startles, grins, and rushes forward to embrace an older couple with graying hair and warm smiles, holding a welcome home sign and a box of Poptarts- oh, fuck.*

*James goes bright red. His boyfriends' parents' first impression of him, and he hasn't changed or brushed his teeth in 24 hours.*

"Momma! Dad!"

Thomas is beyond happy to see his parents, and so are they. Kisses over kisses are planted on his face, a family reunited- a happy family. Far from perfect, and even further away from the broken home that is Church's family.

Don't think about it, James' brain repeats. Don't fuck *this* up. Probably. Chris is getting good at reading his boyfriend's body language.

After tighter hugs, Chris' mother, a slightly chubby, dark haired woman, not without smile lines and crow's feet, acknowledges the other Elder's presence. Warmly.

"You must be the "Jamie" he keeps telling us about!" Poptarts tenses up- not in fear, or shame- not like James would around his parents, but with embarassment.

"Mom..." He gets sushed.

She studies Church's face, then lets her eyes wander towards his form. "Gosh almighty-- You're so handsome, young man!" Her tone is giddy, relaxed, lacking in judgement. It still makes Poptarts' face burn.

"And so *strong*-" She turns to her husband, a lanky- also black haired-visibly shy man. "Reminds me of when you were young, darling!"

"Sweetheart..I've never been *that* toned." The man mutters, more to himself.

"Oh- I'm getting so scatterbrained! Nice to meet you, Elder Church. I am Margaret- but you can call me Marge- or *mom*-" She chuckles, excited. "-and this is my husband, Micheal."

Chris' father shakes James' hand, firmly. "Thank you for taking care of our little poptart." There's absolutely no malice, nor suspicion in his voice. These people know James from the letters Tommy sends them- they know enough to already think of him as one of their own. A James Thomas, if you will.

*A hundred emotions flood James' body - affection for his boyfriend, and for these people who he barely knows and yet are practically adopting him. Slight embarrassment at the unexpected praise. And something else, not new, but an absence he'd learned to ignore now making itself known sharply.*

*But this is clearly a happy reunion, and the only thing worse than that feeling would be making Tommy feel it, too. And really, the giddy shock of being accepted into this family so quickly overshadows anything else.*

"Of course. I do my best to deserve him," *James jokes lightheartedly, accepting the handshake with a nod.* "I didn't realize he'd told you about.. us." *That you were okay with this, he doesn't say.*

The woman presses a palm to her chest with real, unfiltered care for the boy in front of her. Wrinkles deepening from the happy expression animating them.

"You're such a dear." She pats James' arm, instinctively cradling it gently. This is a mother who cherished every single breath and touch she shares with the people she loves- she, along with so many others, knows the regret of not doing so before they're gone- uncherished love still lingering in the air.

And in the back of her brain. Chewing the tissue.

"I was quite..." She looks past his shoulder, as if the word she's looking for will appear from thin air. "Shocked..to say the least." A pause. "..We did not approve." She sends her husband a gentle smile. He nods back, mirroring her expression. It's one of enouragement. They've thought a *lot* about this.

Theres pain in the vibrations of her tone. Marge wishes she didn't react as strongly as she did.

"But, after a *lot* of thinking-" A surprisingly strained smile crosses her face as she grabs her son's hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze- more for herself. "-we realised there's only so much time you have, here, on earth. Better spend it happy, right?" It's clear this is still difficult for her, but she has overriden the ingraved teachings from her past for the sake of the only child she has left- and for her own.

It's sweet. Not perfect- in any way- but *sweet*.

"...Ma!" Poptarts can't hold back his burning eyes anymore, so he doesn't. He hugs both of his parents- even his father seems to be tearing up.

*The sharp absence in James' chest only tightens more. Have either of his parents ever greeted him this way? Shown this much joy at just being in his presence? Maybe his mother did, a long time ago, but years of misplaced resentment dulled whatever love she had for her son by the time he was old enough to feel the lack.*

*But this is a reunion, and he won't ruin it. He stands a respectful distance from the group, glancing around the airport as they have their moment. He spots a few different missionary pairs scattered around the large atrium and flashes back briefly to his own sendoff. His mother had hugged him awkwardly, not saying a word. His father had been too drunk to come.*

*Finally, Poptarts plucks at his shirt and tilts his head toward the exit, drawing him out of his memories. Church tries his best to untense. Now that they're so close, he's hyperaware that every second that passes is a second closer to his parents.*

*After a moment, he decides to take a risk and grabs Tommy's hand, leaning his cheek on the other's shoulder as they walk.*

"I'm glad you have them."
