Lestat's story is so tragic it makes me so mad that his pain is discussed so little. Oh he's evil and manipulative yes!!! They all are!!!! And oh he's so irredeemable!! What he did to Louis!!! Okay but what about what Louis did to him? Louis ignored Lestat for years consumed in his books, he would not interact with Lestat. And Louis was depressed and his behavior makes sense but so does Lestats. His mom ignored him his whole childhood, refused to teach him even to read. She read her books all day and ignored him. The only way she did love him was not the type of love a mother should ever give her child, and Lestat was shaped from this. Louis couldn't have known why Lestat was reacting how he was reacting, I'm aware. When Lestat did communicate about his past though he was shut down, Claudia and Louis did not believe him. Most of the time he was actually open and honest he was shut down immediately. Lestat had a reason for his behavior as much as Louis did, the problem is that they never communicate. Lestat's pain is always minimized and he's seen as dramatic when he's had so much happen to him in his life to make him the way he is. He did horrible things but god he just wanted to be loved. He was so scared of being abandoned because that was all he had ever been his entire life and Louis constantly threatened him with this. Threatened him with the awful loneliness that Lestat has experienced his entire life, even before he was turned. He never had anyone growing up, and the one person he did have (Nicki) was taken from him. He loved Louis and he just wanted Louis to love him too.
