THE WORDS WERE NEARLY THE CAUSE OF SOME LAUGHTER. the mirth bubbled up from deep in wilford’s chest, in some ruthless showing of hilarity. as if anything about the scenario or dialogue was funny in any sense, which was something he couldn’t possibly point out to anyone ( anything? ) else. the sound slipped out only somewhat, though, in form of a small giggle and a smile that turns his expression from something confused to vaguely amused.

“ WELL! who said ever wanted to be rid of you? ”

he turned his smile wider, cheshire cat-like in nature, and his hand lifted to ruffle carmen’s hair affectionately. he wasn’t sure why they were saying what they were — oh! right, he wanted some time alone without carmen at his elbow for a moment, although the why was suddenly gone.

Perhaps they shouldn’t have spoken up in the first place about wanting to spend time with him. They were honestly just desperate for company, even Wilford’s at this point, at least they had some kind of history with him, whether he remembered it fully or not, they knew each other and it was better than trying to find someone new or getting insulted more by Dark, or trying to piece together the enigma of Mark and their adventures.

[ I don’t know, the vibes, I guess? ] They try to explain, gesturing vaguely, before their own chuckle leaves them. [ Either way, you’re stuck with me for a few more hours ] They then decide, not leaving room for protest.

𝚈𝙾𝚄 𝙵𝙴𝙴𝙻 𝚃𝙷𝙴𝙼 𝙼𝙾𝚅𝙴 𝙰𝚆𝙰𝚈 𝙰𝙽𝙳 𝚈𝙾𝚄𝚁 𝙴𝚈𝙴𝚂 𝚂𝙽𝙰𝙿 𝙾𝙿𝙴𝙽. you reach forward as if to stop them but the barrier gives you pause . the paper && rubble beneath your feet crunches as you shift your weight from foot to foot , staring at them in silence .

why ? it’s a question you ask yourself . heavy , existential . it makes your lips twist into a hard line . eyes downcast . you begin to type on your phone .

rushed && messy , you raise it to the glass , giving them only a few moments before starting to try && type again . your fingers are shaky && uncooperative , you can feel their swell of dread in your own chest . but it doesn’t phase you . you don’t let it .

Note: i remember him saying your name.

They’re not surprised by the other’s response. No one seemed to have all the answers and if they did they were unwilling to explain entirely. Carmen kept being left with pieces to try and place together themselves. And they considered themselves smart, in an intelligence sense, maybe naïve, and it was still hard to put it all together. But they’re willing to take any help the stranger ( yet familiar ) will offer.

‘Him’. Many faces pop into their head. Damien, first and foremost, then, whatever that thing was that left with their body. Maybe Mark? Maybe William? Pronoun alone doesn’t give them anymore context. But they feel themselves trying to piece together the enigma of the stranger. Again lips mouthing words carefully to make sure their message is getting across as best as they can. [ Did you know him before or do you know him now? ] They needed more context. Who was he? How did they know him? Remember him saying Carmen’s name? How long ago was it if they remembered it?

[ Please, I don’t understand but I want to. I need to. ]

the other’s advice is less than useful, but mike is unfortunately aware of the fact that no one’s advice has even made an impact on his lifestyle choices. he is way too comfortable in the discomfort of his ways. mike tries hard to imagine a sober future, but it all feels like a waste of energy. he has been a lost cause for years.

upon hearing their declaration of being dead, mike breaks into a coughing fit on the smoke now in his lungs. once he manages to pull himself together, it turns into laughter instead, more out of shock than comedy.

“ ah … well, uh, sorry for your loss? ” he pauses, a puzzled look on his face before it fades and he simply offers the other his blunt.

“ sorry, you’re th’first dead person i’ve met so i don’t really know the lingo … prob’ly the first, anyway, but at this point that may not even be true. ”

Carmen can’t help a small chuckle as the other coughs and eventually apologizes for their own death. Simply listening to him finishing speaking before they take their own breath of the blunt offered, happily feeling it linger in them before they let it out again. A small cough from themselves. It’s been a long time since they did something like this.

❝ I don’t know if there is . . . ‘lingo’. ❞ Carmen muses, moving to pull a hand stressfully through their hair. ❝ Even if there is I don’t care. Half of the people I know should be dead or technically are so it’s fine. Time is weird and broken. ❞ They explain with a slight wave of their hand, before they take another drag and hand it back to him. ❝ I was going to say I could show you the bullet wound that killed me, but I don’t have the body that has that scar. ❞ They don’t really care about possibly freaking Mike out. He seemed like he didn’t care. And if he did, he didn’t seemed outwardly bothered by it anyway. To just talk with someone who didn’t have one hundred and one reasons to hate you, or a history that doesn’t make sense is nice. It just makes them so aware of this ache in their bones and the weight of it all.
