Civilization and it’s discontents by Sigmund Freud
“He dreamt one night that she came and kissed him, and with that kiss she entered his body. She looked through his eyes and listened with his ears. In the morning nothing had changed.”
Duane Michals, From the Series Person to Person, 1974
There are 5 different psychosexual stages in Freud’s theory: Oral, Anal, Phallic, Latent and Genital. Take our psychosexual stage test to discover yours!
Fixations
According to Freud, fixations occured when a child endured a trauma that prevented their libido to fully pass to the next stage of development. An oral fixation can result in either Oral receptive (ex. Being given too much milk, too fast,) characterized by a person who enjoys eating, drinking, smoking and biting nails. They are optimistic but dependent. Oral agressive (ex. Not being given enough milk or on time) results in a verbally abusive, hostile and pessimist person. An anal fixation results in: Anal retentive personality, (used toilet training for positive attention from parents) which becomes extremely tidy, clean, stubborn and perfectionist. Anal expulsive personality, (refuses toilet training to piss off parents and get attention), results in being extremely messy, out of control, and careless. During the phallic phase is when boys experience the famous oedipus complex, and girls get "penis envy"

Well according to Freud, it does.

Defense Mechanism: Denial
Whoever loves becomes humble. Those who love have, so to speak, pawned a part of their narcissism.
Sigmund Freud
Narcissism and Love
Freud believed that narcissism was actually a normal part of the human psyche. He called this primary narcissism, because it is the energy that lies in a persons basic survival interests. He argued that people were born without a basic sense of self, and through experiences they gain this, called an ego. Through social and cultural norms they develop the ideal ego, or a perfect idea of themselves, which their ego is attempting to reach.
Freud also believed that this love towards oneself could be transferred to someone or something else. When a person gave this love away, he or she experienced a decrease in primary narcissism, thus becoming more vulnerable. They were less able to defend, protect and nurture themselves and consequently expected a return of this love to reaffirm this capacity.
In the depths of my heart I can’t help being convinced that my dear fellow-men, with a few exceptions, are worthless.
Sigmund Freud
