It's so unfair how the show greens treat Aegon and Criston.
***They need a drink (Criston has water in a flask, because in the show he can't get anything good)/
Aegon is not the most competent politician, but he had good ideas: to break the blockade in the early stages, capture Harrenhal before Daemon, support the smallfolk, because success in the war depends on them, but everyone takes him for an idiot and eventually reaps the fruits of inaction (the KL is rioting, and Daemon gathered support in the riverlands). Not to mention the humiliation and condescension in every fucking scene.
While the others were cooling off in the castle, Criston was the only active force in the TG from the main squad for a considerable time. He proved his competence in military strategy by successfully capturing castles and forcing enemy houses to kneel before the king. But one chastises him for his "lack of loyalty" (when previously allowed their brother to tell him shit), and the other sends him on a suicide mission. His plan with the twins could have worked if it hadn't been for the plot armor in the form of Misaria, which turned out to be at the right time and place, but Otto exclaims about idiocy when he had an identical plan but even stupider.
In the essence, before the first dance of the dragons, Aegon offered more good ideas than anyone on the council, and Criston did all the work of recruiting other houses, but who cares when they don't live up to other people's expectations to be convenient puppets who should be silent and obediently nod when required?
I mean, it's clear that they are not spared from making mistakes, but they don't deserve such humiliating treatment of themselves from their team (Aegon ended up in this position because of them. wtf they have against him???).
At least they had each other's respect and support. It's not enough, but it's better than nothing.

Alicent is a perfectly functional grownup. She, like anyone else, should take consequences of her actions.
Was she a victim? Yes. Was she a queen who enjoyed fine food and clothing while the smallfolks have to strive for life but still hard to feed themselves? Yes.
Was she manipulated by her father? Yes. Did she actively choose to usurp the throne and directly caused a war? Yes.
Did she misunderstand lasting words of Viserys? Yes. Did she believe that if she wanted, the war would not happen and every lord in seven kingdoms is happy and she could enjoy a life of dowager queen? Yes.
Was she wrong? Yes. Did she have to suffer what’s coming? Yes.
I’m a Alicent-anti. But I’m more hotd anti because the writers are crazy enough to create a evil and stupid female character who seemed know nothing about war and power and yet kept treated as the victim. It’s totally NOT LOGICAL.

Ten-second trivia: WHO’s the father of Aegon’s baby?
Imagine the King’s first and Omega son Aegon was found out to be preggo without getting married. Rumors were flying around Kingslanding and everyone in the city was guessing who fathered Aegon’s unborn children. This became the number one topic in all the taverns, gambling houses, or even brothels.
Games were set and the hot candidates were his siblings, Helaena and Aemond Targaryen. Some others bet their money on the Rogue Prince, Daemon Targaryen, Harwin Strong (in this universe he didn’t leave KL) and Ser Criston Cole, the princes’ master-at-arms.
Aegon at first experienced pregnancy heat and been sleeping, not knowing all of these. When he woke up, he found it all entertaining and quite enjoyable. He refused to reveal the baby’s father no matter how Alicent forced him to. He wandered in Red Keep and pissed off everyone he met including the King’s Hand, Otto Hightower.
The votes changed everyday with every news updated. Like Ser Criston escorted Prince Aegon to Kingswood the other day or Helaena was flying dragons with Aegon today. When Rhaenyra and her family visited KL, there was rumors about the princess decided to take her younger brother as the second wife as Aegon the Conqueror.
Meanwhile Jacaerys Velaryon wondered why no one assumed it could be him. Aegon was like “cause you are too righteous and pure as virgin in the smallfolk’s eyes. Now stop pouting and come listen to our baby’s heartbeats”
Something something the concept of granting meaning and importance to an object/phenomenon/person by giving them a name
It is especially relevant in the world like the one ASOIAF is set in, where the name serves as an extremely important defining factor for many characters (mostly a family name but also their given one). And boy, did HotD writers lean into this - in their own way.
I am not the first one to point out that Jaehaera's name hasn't been mentioned in the show at all - not once. But guess who got to have one?
Sure, everyone absolutely needs to remember a girl who was raped by the prince (who is now the king) and who, except for that fact - which serves the purpose of vilifying said prince (and, in some way, by association, the entire TG) - had zero relevance to the plot. And so we have Dyana - because this absolutely unbiased show can't have anyone forget that the Greens' candidate for the throne has some deplorable proclivities. She even got some extra screen time in season 2: once again, absolutely unnecessary except for reminding the audience of her existence - and of Aegon's sins.
But who cares about the only remaining child of the king; the girl who came within a hair's breadth from death and then lost her twin brother; the one true joy left to her mother? Why would she even need a name?
Jaehaera's fate in the show is uncertain (the writers didn't do away with her at the very least) - but for now she is not even a tool of the story but merely a dead weight that just had to be there for Blood and Cheese to have someone to choose from. And then she was simply conveniently (nearly) forgotten becoming just "Helaena's daughter" - no name, no face, no emotional attachment from the audience. I just wonder if the writers' unwilingness to actually involve Jaehaera in the story (or just let the viewers properly see her) comes from them being equally unwilling to make the audience remember her brother whose death and its consequences they are so eager to sweep under the rug in order to minimize the PR damage done to the Blacks.
P.S. Speaking about the importance of names - they need to be not only revealed but also remembered. Jaehaerys didn't end up nameless - but how many times was he actually called by his name in the show? Right off the bat I can remember only one such case: Aegon asking Helaena where he was in episode 1. And while I believe this was not the only time (I am terribly sorry but right now I can't make myself rewatch any part of season 2, not even for science - so feel free to point out the rest), I have a distinct feeling that he still was far more often referred to as "boy", "child", "son", "heir to the throne" and whatnot. Once again: no name, no memory - which IMO is exactly what the writers were going for.
Mood
Trust me, single mom Aegon living in Essos with his silver-haired baby is a juicy story theme.
He managed to run away from Kingslanding the day he was forced to be put on the throne. He started to live a humble but grounded life and gave birth to his twins alone. He found peace and value in raising his lovely kids. Besides his dragons, he found something he could love and protect and to be loved back unconditionally. He even learned to play harp for his babies as lullaby.
In the strange and vast free cities he used to despise, he realized no one cared about his past or his lifestyle or the fact he had bastards. No one slapped or forced him. Being free is a thousand times better than being a unrightfull King.
He never gonna let anyone know the babies real father so they can have peace and simple life. He worked hard to put food on the table but he never regret his decision.
I'm sorry, but I still find it hilarious that Aegon, who was pulled out of trash yesterday, whom no one had ever taught to rule, and Rhaenyra, who is 16 years older than him, was a cupbearer at the Small Council's meetings and sort of ran the Dragonstone, show themselves generally on the same level as rulers (to me Aegon demonstrates even better skills and greater involvement in the whole process). It's just...funny.
Imagine Daemon being 50s and know nothing about politics, warfare and lords within the realm😅
