ABCryptid BONUS:

M: MOTHMAN

Origin: Point Pleasant, West Virginia

I already did a cryptid for M but the Mothman is one of my favourite cryptids of all time so I had to do a double-feature today.

The Mothman was a flying creature with numerous sightings dated between November 1966 and December 1967. The Mothman was not seen after the collapse of the Silver Bridge, which lead to speculation that the cryptid was either a warning or the cause of the disaster. When it was seen, the creature was described as a tall, white, man-like creature with glowing bright red eyes.

Mad Gasser of Mattoon

It is unclear if the gasser in Botetourt County, Virginia in the 1930s and the one in  Mattoon, Illinois in the 1940s were the same but they share a Wikipedia article and was/were referred to as “the ‘Anesthetic Prowler’, Friz, the ‘Phantom Anesthetist’, the ‘Mad Gasser of Roanoke’, or simply the ‘Mad Gasser.’" This person or these people reportedly sprayed gas into the homes of unsuspecting victims that caused them to pass out.

It is unclear if it was an actual person perpetrating this gas attacks or if they were just the result of industrial pollution that was knocking people out and the spread of a possible assailant caused the town to panic. To this day, the events are unexplained.

Mapping 92 Years of Bigfoot Sightings

“On the hunt for Bigfoot?  Josh Stevens, a PhD candidate in Geography at Penn State, has stumbled across a treasure trove of Bigfoot sightings.  Stevens discovered that the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization has catalogued Bigfoot/Sasquatch sightings in the United States and Canada stretching back to 1921.

The database hosted by BFRO contains thousands of geocoded and timestamped logs describing sightings of the mythical beast.  Stevens consolidated a total of 3,313 sightings from 1921 to 2013.  He then mapped and graphed out the sightings to look for patterns.”

Police Officer Herbert Schirmer Abduction

Date: December 3, 1967 Location: Ashland, Nebraska, United States

Sgt. Schirmer was on patrol when he encountered a UFO hovering above the road, which shot up when he flashed his high beams at the object. Soon, Schirmer realized he had experienced “missing time”, and a red welt appeared on his neck. Hypnotic sessions revealed that the occupants of the landed craft came and took Schirmer aboard, and communicated with him through some form of mental telepathy. They told him that they would visit him twice more and that some day he would “see the universe”.

It showed up round the early to mid 2000s, though no one made claim to recording, not to mention how compressed and pixelated the short clip is, it’s highly suspicious. If anything, its a spooky reminder of what could lie in the depths of our own ocean, we still know only so much.

Angel Hair Phenomenon

Angel hair or siliceous cotton is a sticky, fibrous substance reported in connection with UFO sightings. It has been described as being like a cobweb or a jelly.

Reports of angel hair say that it disintegrates or evaporates within a short time of forming. Angel hair is an important aspect of the UFO religion Raëlism, and one theory among ufologists is that it is created from “ionized air sleeting off an electromagnetic field” that surrounds a UFO.

There have been many reports of falls of angel hair around the world. Angel hair was reported during the 1561 celestial phenomenon over Nuremberg and also at the Miracle at Fatima on the 13th of September and October 1917.

The most widely reported incidence occurred in Oloron, France in 1952, when “great flakes” were reported as falling from a nearly cloudless sky.

The Devil’s Reign of 1909

From January 16th to January 23rd in 1909 the Jersey Devil reigned terror across the state of New Jersey. There were reports of a flying monster attacking people and even attacking a trolley car. It was claimed by those who saw it that it was the Jersey Devil. They discovered the tracks the animal left in the snow resembled hooves, and there only appeared to be two of them.

Police in the town of Camden opened fire on the creature, but they either all missed or the bullets had no effect on it. The animal fled and continued its reign of terror across the state. Schools shut down in fear for the safety of children and residents were advised to stay indoors after sunset. Workers even stayed home in fear they would be attacked on the job. Bounties up to $10,000 were placed on the animal and soon hunters flooded the pine barrens and countryside searching for the infamous Jersey Devil.

A few hunters claimed they captured the creature and they brought it in to collect their reward. The animal they brought in was a kangaroo with artificial wings attached to it. Needless to say the men did not collect the bounty and the terror continued. But just as suddenly as it started, the phenomenon stopped and the Devil stopped its attacks. Sightings of the devil declined after that, but the fear it caused still leads many astray from the pine barrens during the late hours of the night.

The Battle of Ape Canyon

In 1924 a group of miners were prospecting for gold near Mt. St. Helens, Washington. Fred Beck was one member of the group, and he is credited with the sighting as he was the first to report it. Beck even wrote a book about the experience called I Fought The Ape Men of Mt. St. Helens.They began to notice a lot of strange activity near their cabin including large footprints, and they would hear strange noises at night around their cabin. These noises consisted of thumping noises like a gorilla banging its chest, and strange whistling on the ridge near their cabin, and each whistle would have a response from a different location in the canyon. One day they noticed a 7-foot tall ape-like creature spying on them as they went to fetch water from a spring. One of the men fired at the creature with his rifle which made the creature run off. The man claimed that the bullet grazed the creature’s head and it ran out of sight. Another one of the creatures appeared to investigate and they fired at it, presumably killing it and causing it to fall off a cliff and into a gorge. 

The men felt overwhelmed and fell back to their cabin, planning their escape for the morning. The men just had to survive the night, so they fortified their position in their cabin and awaited an inevitable assault. The cabin was built to be effective in cold winter weather so it was windowless. Darkness ascended in the valley and all was quiet, the men eventually fell asleep, effectively letting their guard down. They were awakened by a loud thud against the cabin wall, they listened as they heard multiple pairs of footsteps walking around their cabin. The men became startled when all of the sudden the apes started to bang on the cabin walls attempting to break in. The men sat in fear with their rifles in hand as rocks were thrown at the roof and the creatures continued to pound on the cabin attempting to enter. One creature was successful enough to make a hole large enough to reach its arm in. The men were able to fend off the animal and it fled from the hole. The men claimed it was reaching for an ax, which isn’t an unreasonable claim because apes are known to use tools. The attack continued for hours, the pounding would only stop momentarily before starting back up. Running low on ammo the tension became high and the men used their ammo sparingly only discharging their rifles when the pounding would continue and ceasing fire when it would stop. After countless hours of defending their cabin the pounding stopped and the apes fled the area. The sun rose shortly after and the men cautiously exited their cabin.

The miners fled the area leaving most of their gear at the cabin. They escaped the forest without encountering another ape-man. When the story got out many hunters went searching for the apes, only to be unsuccessful in their attempts. The event of large groups of people searching for the mystery attackers became known as the “Great Ape Hunt Of 1924″. The place became known as Ape Canyon after the attack. It is widely speculate by many that this story was just a hoax in order to get attention or to keep people away from their gold claims. If that was truly the plan it had the opposite effect because it caused many to venture into ape canyon. No evidence of apes were ever found and most believe that this never actually occurred, however Fred Beck swore up to his death that the attack truly happened and none of them made it up. Sightings of Ape-men are nothing new for the state of Washington but after the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980 the sightings of them in the area dropped dramatically. Any ape-men in the area could have been killed during the eruption. We will never know if the Battle of Ape Canyon truly occurred or not, we can only take Fred Beck’s word for it and hope he was telling the truth.

Black dog mythos and sightings are a staple of the British Isles and the surrounding areas. I chose Black Shuck, although other names for such beasts include Barghest, Yeth Hound, the Grim, and Moddey Dhoo. It’s generally regarded as a portent of terrible things to come, although there are a rare few stories where they’re benevolent.
