ABOUT/HISTORY.

born to roslyn johansson (née jarrett), a british jamaican school teacher, and patrick johansson, an american born firefighter, in the english city of sunderland. raised working class on an inner city housing estate and is the oldest of three siblings. has both a brother and a sister. her parents divorced during her early teens.

worshipped the ground her father stepped on and chose to follow in his footsteps the moment she could walk.

struggled academically but flourished athletically. played a variety of sports during her childhood and discovered weight lifting in her teens. broke a couple local youth lifting records and earned a black belt in taekwondo.

joined the fire service during early adulthood and excelled up until her first death.

killed in the line of duty while battling a warehouse fire. inexperience led to her missing the signs of an incoming flashover, during which she perished along with the colleague who'd attempted to pull her out.

the loss of her co-worker took interest away from the strange circumstances of her own death and rebirth, and also made national news. the media reaction to the tragedy led to bitterness, the dissolution of dom's engagement, and dom's quitting the service to follow her father to america, where she became a firefighter in new york.

was yet again killed in the line of duty when a ceiling collapsed during a housefire, crushing both her and one of the house's occupants beneath it. learned of her imperviousness to fire and smoke during this incident, but ultimately succumbed to a head injury.

extremely traumatised by her second death, quit the force and came upon portum by chance during a weekend getaway. joined portum's fire service after moving to the town, hoping the slower pace and supernatural inhabitants would allow her to fulfill her lifelong dream without too much further incident.

suffers from night terrors and insomnia, leading her to rely on the more magically enhanced section of baked goods procured from the sweetest tooth.

Since their shift had started early the previous morning,     Divya was glad to have the day all to herself as she and her squad were released from their duties. She changed her uniform into regular clothes and threw the sling of her gym bag over her shoulders to make her way out of the station. SHe caught sight of Dominique's back walking ahead, and, after jogging towards her work friend to catch up with her, she offered the phoenix a smile. "Hey. Do you feel like joining me at Rosie's for some breakfast? Or... I don't know... have you ever been to Italy?" She chuckled. It was a ridiculous question, one she had made to one past lover before, and Divya refused to think of the embarassing night she was let down easy by Nic, but at least, neither women made things awkward at the station after that. Besides, with Portum's magical borders, traveling around the world was an easier and cheaper task, so, one didn't need to put a romantic spin in that question in the first place. "Anyway—you and me? Breakfast?"

she's headed for her motorcycle and pulling her gloves on when divya catches up, claiming her attention. with a tired smile on her face, dom regards her friend with an easygoing head-tilt before rolling broad, leather-covered shoulders in a shrug. breakfast? hell yeah, she's bloody famished... and craving something unhealthily greasy. something like a good old american breakfast with all of the fixings. hash browns especially. mm, hash browns.

"you had me at breakfast." drawled response is followed by dom reaching her bike and plucking the open-faced helmet from its handlebar. sure, they could walk to rosie's. but why, when they could get there quicker and eat breakfast sooner? ever the gentleman, dom offers the helmet to her companion and shows brief confusion in response to the question about italy. "italy..? no, i haven't. why?" dom isn't... quite fully aware of portum's magical properties. or, at least, she's never actually considered how easy it may or may not be to just... go somewhere.

"... i've been to jamaica a few times? oh, and i went to wales once for school!"

               portum’s  weather  is  one  of  the  things  about  the  town  eloise  enjoys  the  most.   the  sun  touching  her  skin,   the  soft  breeze  coming  from  the  shore  moving  the  skirts  of  her  dress,   the  silky  strands  of  her  chocolate  hair  …  everything  about  it  was  soothing,   it  put  a  content  expression  on  her  face,   it  filled  her  with  a  calm  she  felt  with  few  other  things  in  life.   that’s  why  she  loved  to  walk  to  the  bakery  every  morning,   without  rushing,   enjoying  the  beauty  and  the  buzz  that  surrounded  her.                 arriving  at  the  bakery,   though,   her  mood  shifts  slightly.   the  sight  of  dom  parked  outside  gives  pause,   and  the  feeling  of  pure  worry  settles  in  the  pit  of  her  stomach.   she  manages  a  gentle  smile  nonetheless,   as  she  approaches  her  business’  entrance  and  proceeds  to  open  it.     “  hello,   dominique,  ”     the  greeting  is  as  gentle  as  her  smile,   hands  working  the  locks  diligently.     “  you  look  tired,   bad  night ?  ”     she  never  beats  around  the  bush  when  it  comes  to  it,   to  the  difficulties  dominique  has  to  sleep,   they  both  know  each  other  for  a  long  time  already  to  lie  to  each  other  with  fake  pleasantries.

it takes a moment - just a moment - for dom to be transported back to that day. it's almost always the same dream, you see. one moment it's all routine and confident manoeuvres through the warehouse, preparing to quench aggressive flames. the next? oppressive black smoke, pushing in from all sides, abruptly ignites and burns orange from floor to ceiling. nothing can withstand heat soaring far beyond a thousand degrees centigrade. least of all the air in her tank, which cooks her from the inside out until the darkness sweeps in. merciful, merciful darkness.

when they found her colleague, who'd attempted to drag them both out of the flashover, his mask had melted to nothing and his turnout gear had come away with clumps of flesh. he'd been flash-fried to a crisp, but she'd been reborn. why? what made her so special? she lays and wonders every night when she's off duty, unable to distract herself with the steady snoring of her fellow firefighters. it's a heavy weight on her chest, like a malicious shadow intent on wrapping its fingers around her throat, squeezing and squeezing until...

hello, dominique. the firefighter's eyes snap open and lock upon eloise's features. it's weird hearing her full name, as most people simply refer to her as dom. she likes it, though. there's a soothing quality to the witch's voice. almost as relaxing as her baked goods. a little shaky and off-kilter, dom pushes a smile onto her face and saunters over. voice is a low, tired husk when she speaks. "alrigh', pet?" attempting to come off as less exhausted than she is, dom leans up against the wall while eloise unlocks the door. a laugh echoes in response to the question. "that obvious, eh? and here i was tryin' to be subtle." obvious sarcasm. dom bounces dark eyebrows. "you're a bloody angel, y'know that?"

it was a cold night in portum when this happened. despite being a town filled with nocturnal beings, this route didn't really get much foot traffic. on an unoccupied sidewalk - deliberately away from any flammable object and floating slightly above the pavement, a ball of fire emerges and quickly expands to the size of a person. then suddenly, a silhouette forms in the flames, and the fire compresses to the shape before it wisps away and nolan emerges from it. their shoes meet the ground immediately after the fire disappears and he pats his jacket clean of soot before looking around.

she appreciates the quiet. there's much less foot traffic in this area, meaning she can park her bike and simply enjoy the crisp night air. if she can't sleep, she may as well enjoy the stillness, right? hell, being alone, and almost guaranteed to be left alone, gives her a chance to smoke a rare, hand-rolled cigarette. which is what she's doing, with her back to the side of her motorcycle, when the ball of fire appears and catches her unawares. ah, fuck sake. another phoenix? tired-eyed and unimpressed, dom ignites a flame at the tip of her right pointer finger and uses it to re-light her cigarette. nobody knows about her smoking habit, but she's too damn tired to hide it. it's been a long twenty-four hours.

"y'alrigh', mate? hell of a way to travel." voice is a low, sarcastic drawl that ends with a huff of gross-smelling smoke. ugh, she really needs to kick this damn habit.

         theo  is  more  of  a  pilates  kind  of  person  .  though  that  probably  shouldn’t  be  a  surprise  given  the  whole  witch’s  demeanor  .  but  they’re  also  the  type  of  person  who  needs  a  bit  of  variety  when  working  out  .  so  here  they  are  .  it  wasn’t  a  pilates  day  so  they’re  situated  at  the  squat  rack  with  someone  who’s  willing  to  spot  them  .

they’re  is  acutely  aware  of  dom’s  hands  ghosting  below  the  bar  ,  knowing  that  the  other’s  able  to  provide  support  if  needed  .  theo  takes  in  a  big  breath  and  holds  it  ,  making  sure  to  keep  their  core  stabilized  as  they  concentrate  on  completing  the  final  rep  of  their  final  set  .  feet  are  firmly  planted  on  the  floor  as  they  push  up  and  finally  breathe  out  .  metal  clangs  against  metal  when  they  re-rack  the  barbell  .  “  well  ,  ”  theo  lets  out  a  breath  .  “  thanks  for  the  spot  .  ”  shoots  the  firefighter  a  friendly  smile  .  “  i’m  surprised  to  see  you  here  .  doesn’t  the  fire  station  have  a  gym  of  it’s  own  ?  ”

she maintains a reliable presence behind theo and moves with her for the final rep. she's nothing if not steadfast and ready to jump in at a moment's notice. but, during the rep, she can't help but notice something that gives her minor pause. brow slightly furrowed, she counts the seconds that follow theo's big breath inwards and chooses to remain in position for a second or two once the barbell's been re-racked. just in case.

"hey, you did great!" dom returns the friendly smile then starts removing the weight from the barbell. one at a time, she unscrews the barbell collars with a couple spins, slides the weights free, then carries them over to where they belong. it's a process done without any sign of strain. indeed, dom could juggle the weights if she chose to. "i noticed you held your breath during the lift." the acknowledgement isn't accusatory, and dom keeps her voice light. some people don't appreciate her advice. "that can stabilise your core, but ya run the risk of skyrocketin' your blood pressure and makin' yourself lightheaded." she takes a moment to regard theo's expression while flicking her water bottle open and lifting it for a gulp. the bottle is set aside once she's done and a bench is claimed. dom pats the seat beside her in offering. "seen a couple buddies pass out doin' that, so... my advice? inhale durin' the drop, exhale durin' the lift... like you're blowin' the weight away." cue the grin that makes hazel eyes soften, and finally dom decides to answer the question theo asked. why here and not the fire station?

"as for your question, it's me day off." she could leave it at that, but there's more to it. "and if i didn't go elsewhere, i'd live at that bloody place. chief gets on me arse about that enough." if dom had her way she'd be on call 24/7. it's not healthy, and she knows it... and yet.

"it's nice to see you outta the white oleander, by the way. i'll have to pop by soon. i'm about due another of your bouquets." a vase of flowers makes her apartment feel a little less... empty.

the firehouse has a gym of its own but dom has always been a fan of supporting local businesses in her downtime. besides, this gives her a chance to interact with people other than her colleagues, and interaction is everything to an extrovert such as dom. if she had things her way, she'd never have to be home.

"y'got this!" encouragement is an easy-going drawl as dom keeps her hands just beneath the weight of the barbell, allowing her companion to lift it without interference. it's the last rep, and dom is more than ready to provide her super strength if need be. hopefully, however, doing so will not be necessary. "c'mon! i got you!"

              the evening had fallen over portum like a blanket, awakening the depraved and inviting them into the obscure nightlife that compelled them into acting out on their most wanted desires. a vampire lurks, always searching for someone to corrupt or something to distract him from the horrors of his own life. he stumbles out of an alleyway, drenched in blood that obviously doesn’t belong to him, a smile fading when he comes face to face with another being. “merde, what are you doing over there like some creep?” he exclaims. eyes dart towards where he came from and then back to the person in front of him. he then flashes them a smile, fangs shining in the low light. “i know how this looks but it’s not what you think.”

she's had a few pints and a couple more shots down at envy, so there's alcohol swimming in her veins and it's time to make the lazy trek to her apartment. her empty, dull apartment that lacks decoration and warmth. not for the first time, she realises she should really put out an ad for a room mate. if only to make the place a little less lonely. this is what she's mulling over, her footsteps a little lacking in the grace department, when she comes face to face with sharp fangs and the stench of freshly spilled blood.

prone to charging head-first into danger like a bull in a china shop, dom freezes in place and reacts without thinking. almost instantly, the sweat she'd built up at the club begins to rise from her skin in the form of steam. as a fist clenches, powerful muscles tensing, and a lick of flame rises from her knuckles, dom clenches her jawline and makes cold eye contact with the vampire. "well, then i guess you'd best get to talkin' then, eh?"

That made a lot of sense as to why Dominique hadn't been seen smooching faces around town   ,   but then again, things that weren't of Divya's business, she tended to steer clear from. That was, unless it accidentally fell on her lap like that. She didn't chase gossip, gossip just tended to find her. "Sheesh, that hardly seems like a hookup, babe." Although she joked, gently nudging Dominique's ribs with her elbow while flashing her a wink, Divya couldn't help but feel slightly jealous of Dominique and the relationship status the other seemed to have—or maybe... have had.

Out of all of her failed attempts of having romantic relationships, the one thing that was constantly repeated, was how awful Divya was at showing her feelings to others. At often times, more often than not, actually, the brunette tended to keep her true feelings to herself, hiding behind a smile or acting like something important didn't affect her. Maybe it came with territory, that with being a gorgon and having to have a real grasp on her emotions, but it didn't seem fair to her... that she wanted to build something, but was left with being called shallow. And yet, she wanted to ask Dominique about her engagement. If she was still engaged, if her fiancee was around... but it felt like she'd be invading her privacy right now. If Dominique wanted to talk about it, she would have, right? Just like she mentioned having been engaged.

"Look, I—get it. Things tend to get messy when you mix business with pleasure." And before Nic could say anything, Divya continued. "I mean, I would love to get to know you better than we alreadydo. With or without clothes." And although she braced for the impact of getting a negative response on the 'no clothes' side of it, Divya wanted to speak her piece. "I think you're great. And working alongside you these months has been... well... amazing." Divya moved her head from one side to the other while playfully rolling her eyes. She had never been known to be shy on the compliments department, but somehow, saying that to Nic felt—odd. Like she was confessing her feelings to that first girl on her freshmen year, only to be laughed at her own words. Good thing she's always had a thick skin. "Sorry if my little crush on the hottest girl in town has made things a little awkward for you."

yeah, not much of a hookup at all, eh? but that had been the intention at first. she'd been told by a certain friend to loosen up and enjoy being a single baby butch. play the field, y'know? but it just wasn't in her nature, and the first time she'd felt enough of a spark to take a pretty femme home at the end of the night, their 'hookup' had turned into turbulent wildfire of a messy relationship. u-haul included. nowadays, dom tries not to think about her. or the so-called friend who'd set the whole thing in motion, only to wind up becoming the catalyst of a heart wrenching break up. you're never here, dom, her ex had sobbed while trying in vain to hide her nakedness, even when you're home.

dom hasn't bothered since. there's been too much on her mind, and her work keeps her occupied enough that her home never feels too empty. honestly, she mostly just misses the dog. poor bruno, being stuck with a dirty cheater. "i'm not engaged anymore." she's not sure why she spits that out so fast. maybe she just doesn't want divya to think a lass is waiting for her at home, while she goes out dancing with strangers. if dom wasn't single she'd keep a more respectful distance. "she cheated on us with me best mate." cue another hollow laugh. dom inwardly kicks herself for trauma dumping. what a time in her life it'd been. she'd died, come back from the dead, realised a co-worker had died while trying to save her dumb ass... and then caught her girl in bed with her childhood best friend a few months later. what a hoot, eh? dom licks dryness from her lips then grins at divya's little compliments. her ears are practically on fire at this point.

"bloody hell, love. i ain't anywhere near the hottest in this damn town. i mean, have you seen that one dj? emersyn i think? they're not my type personally, but holy shit." dark eyebrows bounce conspiratorially. "bit of a looker, eh?"
