Ok friends, it’s been a while since I’ve posted but I’m going through a really first world problem right now and could use some opinions and advice. I was offered my dream job (so excited and grateful to have a job this early in residency!) and I got the contract. The salary and sign on bonus are waaaaay more than I was expecting. Like the sign on bonus is a stupid amount of money. All of my residency advisors have been pushing me to make sure I negotiate my contract, and a friend who graduated residency last year and works for the same health system I’m going to be working in told me I need to negotiate.

I managed to negotiate a higher salary but I don’t feel like I need to negotiate for anything more, because it is already so much more than I was expecting or need. But I also know that by not negotiating I am just perpetuating women making less money than men because it is pretty much expected that you will negotiate. I’m having such a hard time deciding what to do, because I don’t want to be taken advantage of but I also am super lazy and am very very happy with the contract they offered.

Anyone have similar experiences and can offer some advice?

I don’t want to get my hopes up, but...

There is a pretty large chance I will be adopting a dog in the next few weeks! I didn’t expect it to happen this quickly but I was bored in clinic today so I was looking at dogs and found one I love. I submitted an application for her around 3pm and got an email back at 8:30pm that I am approved pending approval from my landlord. This is absolutely insane. I should be hearing back pretty soon about a home visit and moving on to actually adopting her. This is so freaking exciting!

How difficult can it be...

How difficult can it be to make an appointment for therapy?

Well first, there’s the mental and emotional difficulties of actually getting up the courage to call and make the appointment.

Then there’s the difficulty of actually making the appointment. I’ve called about eight different therapy clinics and none of them actually answered the phone. And the last thing I want to do is leave a message about how depressed I am and how much I need to talk to a therapist. Plus most of them don’t actually have a receptionist so you just leave a message for whichever therapist you want to see and they will call you to make the appointment. But I just want whichever therapist can see me soonest! This is so frustrating and it is the last thing that should be difficult. I ended up deciding to leave a message for a therapist right next to my favorite ice cream shop so that I can at least get ice cream after therapy.

So I’m on my newborn rotation right now, which is the time when we are supposed to meet our 6 circumcision requirement to be signed off. I have 2 more shifts left and I have done a total of 1 circ. Because every single baby boy I’ve taken care of, the OB attending has done the circ. Which is super super annoying. But today I was with one of the OB attendings, and she was complaining about having to do circs, so I casually mentioned that if she ever doesn’t want to do a circ on a family med patient we would be more than happy. And then she said the thing that made me so much more angry and annoyed. She shrugged her shoulders and said “well, it’s easy money”. I won’t be signed off on circumcisions but oh, yeah, we need to make sure you get your easy money. I am so pissed. Why is this the way things are done here?? Why do women’s doctors do circumcisions here??

Ok but on a positive note I did a circ this morning and the attending (who also happens to be our program director and the woman/human being that I admire, respect, and basically want to grow up to be the most) told me that at this point with how I’m performing she would be okay with signing me off on circs because the two have been almost perfect and the best circs she has seen from an intern.

listen i love greta thunberg i really do like what an icon BUT i think it’s absolutely ridiculous that she, a literal child, is being made to be the face of stopping climate change. and she obviously thinks its ridiculous too. i’ve seen so many adults in power talking about how inspirational she is and everything, and then pretty much just stop there. it is EMBARRASSING that the 4.5 billion people over the age of 30 on earth right now are looking to one teenager to fix the problems they created. it’s not inspirational, it’s pathetic. Greta has to be so extremely aggravated with the amount of attention and lack of actual action from policymakers, because I sure am.

Day 2 of vacation: laundry, grocery shopping, and BREAD! Before my uncle passed away he gave me a couple of his bread baking cook books. I’ve used them quite a bit but I still will find new recipes he made notes on. This is a rustic bread he made a couple changes to and I decided to try out today. Whenever I find a recipe with his scribbles next to I I feel just a little bit closer to my uncle. He and I were very different, but one thing we agreed on was bread. Specifically, homemade bread is worth the effort. I’m so excited to try this loaf once it’s cooled a bit.

Haha so true! For the first time in my life I didn’t have to cream/mix by hand and it was so easy! I also whipped up some whipped cream in like 5 seconds with my stand mixer. It is a total game changer.
