Kayla Rosiar, 6, Calumet CH Blossom: Because I'm the leader and it goes wonderfully with my long red hair. Q: Bubbles, why are you a little afraid of bugs? They are harmless. Reyna Ortiz, 9, Hammond Bubbles: Bugs are gross, gross, gross! Except for ladybugs, of course. They're sweet and pretty. Q: Buttercup, what Is your favorite thing about kicking evil butt? Victoria Hanson, 11, Valparaiso Buttercup: Everything. I like kicking and punching and showing those bad guys that bad doesn't get you anything but trouble.

Q: Blossom, is it hard having two sisters that are the same age as you? How do you keep them out of your stuff? Jesslyn Truesdale, 7, Calumet City Blossom: No, it's not hard, since we've been together from the beginning. And since Bubbles and Buttercup have completely different interests, it's not hard to keep them out of my stuff. Buttercup likes stuff like punching bags, Bubbles likes crayons and I like books. Q: Bubbles, why do you think Buttercup is mean to you? Miranda Russell, 13, Valparaiso Bubbles: I think she's jealous because she can't color like me. Buttercup: Yeah, right. Q: Dear Buttercup: Why are you so angry all the time? James Oppolo, 5, Hammond Buttercup: I'm not angry. I'm just tough on crime and criminals. Q: Did you have a mom? I'm asking all of you. Kaitlyn Jagar, 10, Hammond Blossom: Ms. Bellum? Buttercup: We see her face all the time. Bubbles: She's beautiful. Q: Bubbles, can you talk to animals? Elizabeth Lanman, 5, Munster Bubbles: Yes, I can speak squirrel and monster and all other animal languages. Q: Dear Bubbles, I want to know if flying is fun. Selena Castillo, 4, Hammond Bubbles: Flying is the funnest. I get to see all the beautiful colors from way up high! Q: Buttercup, why did you pick green for your outfit? Trisha Madura, 5, Munster Buttercup: 'Cause green is awesome. Much stronger than that pink and blue that Blossom and Bubbles wear. Q: Blossom, what do you do in school? Tiffany Madura, 7, Munster Blossom: I like reading and writing and math. Anything to make my young mind grow. Q: Do you like Britney Spears? Karlie Figiel, 5, Hammond Blossom: I like classical music. Buttercup: I like rock. Bubbles: I like birdies singing. Q: What was your first show about? Kelsie Figiel, 7, Hammond Blossom: Well, there was that battle with Roach Coach. He wanted to take over the world, with his army of roaches. Buttercup: That was so cool! Bubbles: No, it wasn't! It was gross! All those bugs! Yuck! Q: How do the Powerpuff girls stay big and strong? Because they fight Mojo Jojo so much? Ellen Wyand, 4, Crown Point Blossom: We stay big and strong because we are superheroes. Bubbles: Thanks to Chemical X. Buttercup: But beating up Mojo sure doesn't hurt.

David Feiss, creator of Cow and Chicken

As printed in The Press-Tribune (Roseville, CA) on July 22, 2002:

Feiss portrays emotion through his cartoon characters. "Cow and Chicken," which, although no longer being made is still wildly popular in syndication, came about because Feiss was too tired to read to his daughter one evening. "It started as a bedtime story for my daughter when she was 6," Feiss recalled. "One night I was too tired to turn on the light and pick a book, so I made up the story of Cow and Chicken." He admits to being influenced by Monty Python and Warner Brothers cartoons, although now he says his tastes have changed. "I make cartoons but I don't particularly like to watch them," he said. He started his career with a short animated film he made in high school, which he sent to Hanna Barbera upon graduating. He was 19. And they hired him. After sending his daughter to sleep that night with images of a cow and chicken brother-sister team, Feiss wrote the story down the next morning. Menendez did the drawings, and a classic was born.

Bubbles, from The Powerpuff Girls (1998)

"Bubbles is the golden haired angel. The pigtailed happy go lucky one of the three, always seeing the best in everything. Although sometimes a bit over sensitive, nothing riles her more than seeing someone wronged.

Bubbles wears her heart on her sleeve, leaving you in no doubt as to her emotional state, but whether it be happy or sad, you can be assured it's heart felt. It’s these lively emotions that inject the laughter, fun and spirit into the Powerpuff Girls' numerous adventures."

Bubbles: Not having candy and ponies…oh yeah and evil.

Bubbles: Buttercup, Blossom, Professor, teacher, my shoes, flying, nice things etc, etc.

6. What would you do with a million dollars?

Bubbles: Comb them, my Suzy Sparkle has at least a million doll's hairs.

7. Do you know the alphabet?

Bubbles: Yes, but not in order.

8. Do you watch TV?

Bubbles: Cartoons!!!

9. When not saving the world, what do you do?

Bubbles: Well, we save the world a lot but when we don't I save tin foil.

10. What would you do if you didn't have superpowers?

Bubbles: Same stuff 'cept fly.

Blossom, from The Powerpuff Girls (1998)

"She's the indisputable leader and spokesperson with fiery red hair tied up in her trade mark red bow. Her perfect combination of brains and beauty often saves the day.

Despite having just learned the alphabet and having to be in bed by eight o'clock, Blossom takes her responsibilities seriously, giving her an aura that goes well beyond her years.

She is the child who thinks she needs to be an adult. The funny thing is her idea of what an adult is, can be a bit childish. So no matter how hard she tries, Blossom, the perpetual Girl Scout is indeed a little girl."

Blossom: I think school is a wonderful place for a child to receive their education so they succeed in life.

Blossom: That’s a good question. I think evil is bad because it does not do any good.

3. What do you want?

Blossom: What I want is world peace and a new dress.

Blossom: I hate that there is no world peace and that my dress is hot pink.

5. What do you love?

Blossom: I love my sisters, I love Professor Utonium and I love being a super hero.

6. What would you do with a million dollars?

Blossom: I would go to the government and buy world peace, and then a new dress.

7. Do you know the alphabet?

Blossom: Yes I know the alphabet forwards and backwards.

8. Do you watch TV?

Blossom: Yes I sometimes watch tv but not all the time. I watch smart shows with the Professor and cartoons when I want to laugh.

9. When not saving the world, what do you do?

Blossom: Well, in truth I never stop saving the world because I recycle.

10. What would you do if you didn't have superpowers?

Blossom: If I did not have superpowers I would still have super powers because everything on earth has a super power in its own special way.

"Buttercup is the Powerpuff Girl with attitude and a volcanic temper. There’s nothing she likes better than getting to grips with her enemies and is often frustrated when she is held back by Blossom and Bubbles. She secretly feels she should be their leader.

She is very ‘Zen’ and disciplined and battles against a constant demon, that of being seen as girlish! The ultimate tomboy, Buttercup’s philosophy is to hit first and ask questions later.

Although this attitude makes her the most courageous of the girls it can also backfire making her, her own worst enemy. But don’t let the hard exterior fool you, beneath it all she is just a little girl."

The Powerpuff Girls: Look and Find, by Lynne Suesse (2001).

This little book was published in 2001, containing illustrations in a ”Where’s Wally?” kind of style. Although it’s not difficult to complete, it’s worth looking at solely for the images, all of them based on season 1 episodes of The Powerpuff Girls, a cartoon whose marketing was hitting hard in the early aughts. Some of the characters shown in these pages were rarely seen after that season (and some weren’t lucky enough), which makes this book even more unique.

In case your brain needs to rewind, the episodes are: “Telephonies”, “Mime for a Change”, “Octi Evil”, “Uh Oh Dynamo”, “Ice Sore”, “Buttercrush”, “Cat Man Do” and “Monkey See, Doggie Do”.

One thing I’ve come to appreciate more in my adulthood (being passionate about drawing) is the amalgam of styles featured in The Powerpuff Girls; its UPA meets Jay Ward-meets Hanna-Barbera-meets whatever Craig McCracken was watching as a kid- kind of style. One would think it’s all borrowed from the classic anime style, but as the creator himself puts it, it’s all due to how “iconically and graphically” he draws (Powerpuff Girls Powerzine, p. 42).

Yet, there’s plenty of japanese influence to appreciate. Mojo Jojo is based on Dr. Gori from the tokusatsu series Spectreman, who was this very stylish... thing... simian... scientist dressed in pink who kinda looks like Laura Bozzo. McCracken himself thought the girls had to look “as cute as Sanrio Characters“ (e.g. Hello Kitty, My Melody) but had to kick asses like superheroes of his time didn’t tend to. He was also inspired by how his friend Paul Rudish made “really cool drawings” that were “cute and appealing” at the same time. The fights between the Girls and the villains are based on those featured in anime programs, but the rest hails from various sources that deserve to be distinguished. The backgrounds are reminiscent of the UPA cartoons and, animation wise, have that Hanna-Barbera way of turning budget constraints into a staple. I prefer the early designs of the girls (sort of lanky, curvy, not too geometric) over that of the post-Powerpuff Girls Movie seasons (shorter arms and legs, even more rounded, geometrically pure), because it’s reminiscent of the underground beginnings of the show, as The Whoopass Girls, where Craig McCracken had a style that he later deemed as “sickly“ looking. And it certainly looks like that, but I want to believe that people don’t want pretty all the time.

The girls, as the center of the show, are perfectly executed too. They’re body, brain and spirit; together they are a single strenght, and when you take that in consideration, it’s hard to pick up one. In fact, I can never just pick up one. Joined to this world of wacky villains, massive chaos and simple-looking settings, you can only expect great dynamics (when assembling everything right that is, something Cartoon Network forgot from 2014 onwards).

I didn’t expect to write this much, geez. I haven’t even mentioned Superman, Underdog, Batman, Margaret Keane and a plethora of musical influences. Simply put, this show is amazing in its entire DNA. It has aged as fine wine, and that’s because it’s so firmly rooted in the indefinable. You can tell it started in the late 90′s and evolved throughout the early years of the millenium, but the characters might be living in the 50′s, or 60′s, or in an antirely different timeline, where 50′s and 60′s get a little bit futuristic. You just gotta love that it is like it is.

These photos were taken from Joseph Giardina’s blogspot. He worked on the 2008 special “The Powerpuff Girls Rule!!!“ and made them with Adobe Illustrator as a test to see if the original art style could translate into Flash animation. And it did.
