There’s this look Hawkeye gets on his face sometimes that I absolutely love, because its totally bone-chilling.

It’s not that it’s not the expression of the fired-up outbursts, the passionate rebellions, or the manic spiralings - it’s more that it’s kind of the split-second moment between those film frames.

It’s the moment when all the eyes of all the different masks he wears, and personas and facades he channels himself through, line up completely, and you can see directly down the barrel into the cold fury burning at his core. 

I love and hate how much more of it we see as the show progresses.

addition: I understand wanting to wait until things feel Right to write. but as someone who also contends with adhd and The Situations there is not going to be a time where it magically feels perfect to write. "I'll do it someday / later / when..." is an endless delay. you've gotta crack open a document and write something even if it sucks ass because if you don't get your brain used to the habit it's not gonna stick. the time you can start is Now.

One thing I find really interesting to explore about Severus is whether he ever felt bad, or experienced cognitive dissonance, when he started working for Dumbledore. Because in the end, the Death Eaters might have been the worst and they might have been horrible people, but the truth is that they never treated him badly and they gave him a sense of belonging when the future “heroes” basically spent their time despising and abusing him. It was the Slytherins who would later become the villains of the story who gave him a safe place, a purpose, and a space in which he could develop and he chose to betray them. Because it is a betrayal: a betrayal of all those who trusted him.

And I’m not sure to what extent he felt comfortable with that. Because on the one hand, I’m sure he knew what he was doing was right, that he was clear about wanting to avenge Lily, to do the right thing, and to free himself from guilt. But at the same time, every single time he interacted, for example, with the Malfoys, who canonically we only know were close to him and who never treated him badly, quite the opposite: he was lying straight to their fucking faces.

And I think people focus far too much on his redemption arc, on Lily, on Dumbledore, and on all that rubbish, when the real big question is this: how do you live a double life when you are actively working to bring down the people who protected you, while helping those who abused you? That’s brutally hard.
