one guy was facetiming his sister, she was in Texas for work and I know this because they were yell-talking at each other. This went on for a few minutes so I got up, walked over and sat down in the chair next to him an asked if she was staying hygrated as I heard Texas can get really hot in the summer and that it looked like she has a bit of a sun burn.
The two of them were flabergasted. And the guy said "what are you doing???"
So I was like. "....well you included me in this call and I'm just worried about your sister."

So I goes "If it was private then how the hell do i know youre talking to your sister who is in texas on a business trip?"
Ultimately im not sure he really got the point but he lowered the volume because now he's worried about creeps like me listening to his conversations but at least he's behaving now even if he doesnt understand why
I literally did this to someone. She was listening to very very descriptive erotica on the beach at max volume. So I walked over, sat down next to her, and asked her to catch me up on the plot I'd missed. When she asked what the hell I was doing I said "oh I thought this was like a book club thing? Since you're playing it at full volume on a crowded beach?" She suddenly remembered she did in fact bring headphones and was willing to use them. She kept looking at me like I was a lunatic for the rest of the time she was there but it was probably the funniest thing I'd ever done

There's a lot of good comments and tags in the notes, but this one is very important, I feel like it deserves some emphasis.
Part of how authoritarianism works is telling you that you can't stop it. And you can't stop it by yourself. But it wants to stop the train of thought there and let you fall into despair.
You need to remember the next part: you don't have to stop it by yourself.
You're not alone. Take care of your community and let your community take care of you. Supporting each other is so vital.
How to track your period (in a private, long-term, and gender-neutral way)
Over the past year, I've been on a journey to keep track of my health information in a way that is private, convenient, and empowering. I'm compiling notes on my system into comprehensive Tumblr posts so other people can get ideas.
My other post about the One Supreme Notebook of Medical Things covers the overall layout of the notebook, but I wanted to make a post specifically about tracking menstrual cycles since period tracking apps have serious privacy issues. Tech companies can steal, sell, or snitch with your data. Don't give them the chance.
I promise it's not difficult. Ready? Let's do this!
DIY time!
You will need
A notebook or binder system. One where you can add pages is preferred but not required
A writing utensil
A ruler
A calendar for reference (optional)
*The notebook system I have is the TUL disc-bound system from Office Max. I talk more about it in the Supreme Notebook post.
The spread: Page size and orientation
My pages measure about 5.5 inches x 8.5 inches or 14cm x 21cm.
Part of why I chose TUL is that the pages have 30 spaces to write on between the lines plus an upper and lower margin. The left-size margin is about 1/4 inch or 0.75cm. I use it to write the numbers for the days. I use the lower margin as Day 31 in the months that have it, and I use the upper margin to note the months and the year.
Other options include using grid/dot matrix pages, scrunching a few days together, turning the page horizontally, or buying blank paper and drawing lines according to your needs.
The spread: Making the calendar
To make a yearly calendar over a 2-page spread, start by measuring the writing space across where you want to put the months. Despite being USAmerican, I used metric for most of this because it just made the math easier.
If your side margins are large enough that you can write numerals in them, EXCLUDE the margins in your measurement.
If you don't have margins or they are too small to write in, determine how much space you need to write the numbered dates (I recommend 1/4 inch or 0.5-1cm) and subtract this number from the overall page width to get your measurement.
Next, divide that by the number of months you want per page. In these photos, that number is 6. The number you get is the amount of space you get between the lines for each month.
Using your ruler, mark out the space for each line on the top AND bottom of the page. Then, connect these marks to get straight lines down the page.
Add the months and year across the in the margin one side and numbers 1-31 along the other for the dates. For months with fewer than 31 days, just shade out those sections.
The spread: Adding your data
Once you have your calendar set up, it's time to add your data. If you want, you can add a key for symbols or space for notes in the margins, sticky notes, or page inserts.
When your period starts, count back how many days it has been since the start of the period before it. Then, write that number on your period start date. That number is how many days your menstrual cycle was that month. Remember, it's totally normal for that number to not be exactly the same each month!
Throughout your cycle, make notes on what symptoms you experience, how you feel, and more. Make notes of anything you might want to talk with your health care team about.
Online resources for bullet journals have some cool ideas about calendar spreads, decoration, and symbols. Check them out if you need inspiration.
Keep the book in an easy-to-access place (depending on your privacy needs at home). I use it more when it's somewhere I can see easily and regularly. That might be on top of your dresser or in a drawer or on a bookcase. Experiment with what works best for you.

Why use paper?
If you live in a country with limited reproductive and privacy rights, like the United States, your electronic data can be sold or turned over to government entities. Even if everything you've done is perfectly legal, you could, in theory, be targeted for simply having an irregular cycle.
Some apps not based in the USA, like Clue, have said they will not sell or hand over user data, but there's no guarantee they will hold that line if things get tough. Or, less severely, they could simply stop providing their app to the USA altogether.
Some apps store your data on your own device, which makes them safer but still has some risks, including hackers and the fact that it's relatively easy to seize a phone. It has GPS. It's probably right there with you, on your person. It's the first place they look for personal info.
An electronic "paper trail" is far easier to trace than a real paper one. Paper is ephemeral. There are lots of reasons a paper might be impossible to find.
FAQs
Won't this take, like, forever? Not really. Once I figured out how I wanted to configure the pages, setting them up took 5-10 minutes per spread. If you do a yearly spread, that's only 5-10 minutes per year. As far as adding old data, I think it took me under 2 hours to make pages and input data for 10+ years of periods. Just put on music or a podcast or TV show and have at it!
How will I know when my period is coming? If you track your symptoms regularly, you'll likely start to notice patterns in how you feel before your period starts. If you have any suspicions or worries or just feel like "Gosh, it's been a hot minute since I bled," just check the book and see when you last wrote it down.
What about when I'm traveling? If you don't want to take the book with you (understandable) but need to write things down to remember them, just note any symptoms on a different piece of paper and transfer the info when you get home.
What about at the doctor's office? Doctors often ask when your last period was. If it's an appointment you know about in advance, bring the book with you. You can even include it on your calendar reminder about the appointment (ex: "Bring book"). Double points if you use the notebook for other medical things! If it's an unexpected visit (or an emergency), you will unfortunately have to rely on your own recollection.
What if I can't afford a fancy system? While some systems with more conveniences might be more expensive, you can get by with a simple 3-ring binder or traditional notebook if that is what is accessible to you.
What if I can't write that small? Get a notebook or binder that can accommodate your handwriting and/or put fewer months per page.
All that being said, I know this won't be the perfect or even viable solution for every person. But if it's helpful to even one person, then this post is doing what I intended.
