“because i have no acting experience and i didn’t wanna make the show about me. it’s so much bigger than that. i can still wear whatever the hell i want, i just can’t do much with it.” charlotte shrugged and took notice of the tall blonde sitting on a stool but decided not to ask him for help looking. “oh. so, stone it is, i guess. sorry.” she shot back, suddenly feeling a little uncomfortable but she took his little hand gesture as a joke, making a slight ‘yikes’ face before shaking the fat suit a bit to get the dust off. “no, i get it. i just thought i’d be seeing a bit more of him around the theater, i suppose. oh, good!” bouncing around in excitement, the petite redhead stuck her legs into the suit, pulling up and smiled up at him before moving her hair out of his way so stone could zip her up. “honestly, i think this screams theater. why the fuck do you guys have a fat suit back here?” the second she felt the zipper tug all the way up, she wobbled over towards the mirror and struck a pose. “wow, i’m a regular sumo wrestler. chest bump?” she asked, peering over at the blonde with a smirk before wobbling back over towards him and extending the inflatable tummy a bit to touch his lightly.

taking a moment from their conversation to actually look at her, stone knew that she wasn’t from the la area. “where are you from then? everyone around here is jumping to make their big breaks, it’s unheard of that someone in such a minor production wouldn’t jump at the chance to be their own star.” her enthusiasm for the fat suit was new, some may have seen her as childish, and while it was, he found her childlike wonder reminiscent of his younger sister’s and he didn’t have it within him to mock her. instead, he zipped the suit up once she had settled into it and moved a few steps backwards so she could make her way unimpeded to the mirror. “that’s good seeing as this is an actual theater. we need all sorts of things because representation matters.” he parroted from a pamphlet he had declined from one of the hipsters loitering around the taco truck a few blocks down. ”mhm, you look great. now all we need to do is motion to add sumo wrestling to the olympics because with you we finally have a chance at taking japan down.”

“no, no, you’re supposed to tell me to break a leg!” stella pointed out with a growing smirk, barely containing her chuckles before she laced her fingers behind her back and continue to traipse around the stage. “a flower shop downtown - it’s bright yellow, very hard to miss. free to pop by anytime, i’ll have peonies waiting for you. or are you more of a waterlily type?” his last question tugged sharply on her nerves, but she played relatively coy and merely sputtered out a few baffled laughs. “well, i’d like to believe that i possibly could - pressure’s on, then, isn’t it? i don’t know, there’s certainly something special about this show, i think that quality will definitely attract a solid audience.”

“hm, sounds like you’re just trying to trap me into going down for your future accidents, but i won’t fall for it.” stone listened intently, mentally mapping the different routes she must take to and from the flower shop to the theater. with a shake of his at her offer, the stage manager simply shrugged his shoulders. “i can honestly tell you that i wouldn’t be able to tell either of them apart from one another. flowers are lovely, but they’re overall useless. once they’re taken from the ground all they’re meant to do is die, but thanks for the offer - maybe i’ll swing buy before my next funeral.” finding heart in her optimistic outlook, stone nodded. “as long as everyone does their due diligence, i don’t see why it won’t be a success.”

although he was expecting an answer twice as harsh, jimin was dumbfounded by stone’s words. it was the first time in a while someone was real with him - at least from his point of view. he cleared his throat, nodding at the male’s inquiry. “yeah, i know how to sew… i’m not particularly an artist but, i mean, i can lay down a clear sketch for clothing and such”, he explained. min’s grip tightened around his pencil as he pointed out to the skirt of a teal dress. “i feel like this dress is too long and narrow”, he started, flipping his pencil around and roughly erasing half of the skirt of the dress. 

“that’s good, that’ll help you i think.” those his own talents didn’t quite extend to sewing and the like, stone appreciated any skill able to be done by hand. clearing his throat uncertainly, he was not certain how to take the other male’s comment. “art is -- uh anything you put your heart into. i can’t thread a needle but i can build you a nicely stained liquor cabinet. both are art. we are own, separately, artists.” he nodded as jimin mentioned the adjustments he would make. “well she’s a stick of a girl, can’t do much about that. would making it shorter work for.. for the scene?” not that he was ever the helpful sort, stone wondered if he should actually take the time to read the script any time soon or if he could continue to coast through the theater without doing so. he opted for the latter.

sterling felt the familiar hint of a smile, listening to stone’s words. though not his intention, stone had a funny way of diffusing whatever stress seemed to cloud the theater owner’s mind. “where are you going?” in all honesty, he wasn’t very hungry. in the back of his mind, he knew he would be later. “you know what i like. just… order something for later.” rummaging through his pocket, he retrieved his wallet before tossing a twenty and two fives over to stone. “where have you been, anyway? i was looking all over this hell-hole for you. backstage is a disaster.”

despite the positions they held, stone couldn’t help but to be concerned for his boss - especially with the current state the theater was in, he knew there was a lot of strain on the other man’s shoulders. they were long passed the point where stone needed to ask what he wanted to eat, but the stagehand liked to have a reason to check up on him. “i think i’m in a car ring.” he muttered nonchalantly, moving further into the office to pick up the bills for sterling’s order. “i mean, it’s repainting cars but they’re only doing it for four days and then its all over. weird right? it’s like the lamer, background work in gone in 60 seconds.” shrugging off the lackluster job description, it paid well and that’s all that mattered. “lost my phone again.” he said not too bothered with his own carelessness, “what’s wrong backstage? didn’t they just get here?”

“aside from a little bit of embarrassment, i’m alright,” stella scoffed out a chuckle, shyly scratching at the back of her neck. “i’ll probably have to work on better excuses when i’m inevitably caught dancing again. do you think trying to swat a fly might carry any sort of merit? and i hadn’t really planned on coming this early, but my shift ended early and i guess i wanted to get a bit situated with the place.” her gaze traveled along the immaculate architecture of the theater, swept up in the history of it all. “totally stunning, isn’t it?”

“good, you’ll live then. be careful not to break your ankle or anything doing all of that.” he nodded briefly, a grin tugging at his lips as she took more time to think of a better excuse. “the fly one sounds good. oh cool, where do you work at?” he had enough forethought not to ask why she needed a second job, but figured that since the play hadn’t really started at all it was probably for the best. following her gaze, stone shrugged. “i mean. maybe? i’ve seen the same paint job for five years but it has it’s perks i guess. can you see yourself selling out all these seats or what?”

jimin gently drummed the end of his pencil against his temples, as if it’d make new ideas brew inside his head. the thing with min was… he wasn’t really confident. it all really stemmed from his past experiences. what was social anxiety became anti-social, and soon he realized it’d taken over his life. he was always doubting his talent and himself. truth of the matter was, he wasn’t half bad. it took anyone with average taste and knowledge to see he wasn’t doing a bad job. but min could never accept compliments or that he was good. when stone approached him, jimin initially tensed up, holding his breath. “i… um. i can do better, i don’t really like it, it’s just-”, he let out a sigh of defeat. 

taken aback by the younger male’s quick dismissal of his own talents, stone took another bite of the donut in his hand experiencing -- for the second fucking time -- the tartness of the raspberry in the center. suppressing the urge to groan, he chewed through it quickly before swallowing it down. “i mean, probably, but it’s not like anyone’s going to know that if they have nothing to compare it to. you seem pretty good to me. do you know how to sew and all that?” wiping at the corner of his mouth with a free hand, stone inched closer hovering in jimin’s space. “what would you do differently, let me see.”

“a hallucination? i think i look great!” she pouted and folded her arms across her chest but felt a bit odd underneath his gaze and she turned her attention back to the bright pink dress that clung to her frame. “a fat suit? really?” charlotte’s entire face lit up and she bounced up on her does in excitement before she started rummaging through the racks of costumes, desperately looking for a fat suit. “mr. oberon? s-stone? can i call you stone? i…i’m not sure if you’re in charge of me but i see you around more than sterling so…” she drifted off, looking over at him while her other hand was poking around a box. a gasp left her lips as she felt something in her hands, hopefully it was the fat suit, and pulled it out. “you’re not gonna tell sterling i’m in here, right? — alright, i found the fat suit! is it a sumo wrestler suit? i’ve always wanted to be a sumo wrestler for the day.”

“the awful hallucination part is where i’d have to explain myself. that looks great on you. remind me again why you didn’t cast yourself as the lead? then you could wear whatever the hell you want.” pulling up a stool, he watched on curiously as she dived almost literally into the various trunk in search of the fat suit. wrinkling his nose in distaste, stone shook his head though she couldn’t see him. “if you call me mr. oberon i’ll personally ensure that this play fails.” he said with a point look accompanied by the familiar i see you gesture of two fingers pointing at his own eyes and then just the one pointed in her direction. “sterling’s just a busy man. he, uh, has a lot of things to attend to you know? he doesn’t have the time to check on every small inconvenience. no i wouldn’t rat on you, you’re not harming anyone.” rising from his seat, he meandered over to her. “let me help you put it on, this is going to be the picture used for you for the playbill.” he joked, though he wasn’t in charge of any such thing.

he couldn’t believe he was doing this. why was he doing this? as he looked down at his doodles, jimin couldn’t help but ask himself this. kairi convinced him, yes, but seeing all the people enter the theatre, he suddenly regretted his decision. it was painfully obvious he didn’t belong here. they were all fairly good looking, and as they arrived, they got comfortable immediately, starting to mingle with other cast members. he even heard some people belting out their notes and arpeggio already. as if they’d done this their whole life. and maybe they had. but jimin? no, not at all. he swallowed thickly, tightening his grip on his pencil. he applied more pressure as he went over his initial sketch of a mid length, flowy teal dress on a faceless model. so much so that his lead snapped off, stuck in the sheet of paper. “Ah, shibal…”, he muttered to himself, ripping the page off and squeezing it into a ball.

albeit lazily, stone made slow progress greeting all the new faces. his only hopes were that no died while on the premises but taking a look at some of the more, err, lively cast members who neglected to pay attention to their surroundings, he figured he was in for quite a job. grabbing a donut from the crafts table, he frowned at the raspberry filling that overpowered his taste dubs. making he way with the disappointment of a pastry held deftly in his hands, stone continued greeting the new people. “hey what’s your damage?” he asked the bright haired male, not even bothering to introduce himself before peering over his shoulder. “that looks really good. i like that color blue-green will look great on stella.” he commented.

slender digits pressed against the white keys of the grand piano that sat along side of the stage. most of the cast and crew worked backstage practicing for rehearsal tonight, but nothing had really begun quite yet, which left riley to the piano. she would give anything to have a piano of her own in her apartment, but that was stretching it a bit. her guitars already took up a ton of space in the efficiency. the tune playing was original, but it wasn’t something she’d written recently. she was just playing around, when she heard footsteps come up behind her. startled, riley smashed her hands on the keys, creating a loud, unpleasant sound. “shit! sorry. i didn’t know anyone needed the piano. let me just get my stuff packed up,” she kicked one leg over the piano bench and turned around to lock eyes with the other person in the room.

it had been a good while since stone heard anyone besides himself or sterling tinker with the piano. he had intended to just see who it was, though the jarring strike of keys he was greeted with him left him feeling less than pleased with the brunette. “calm down, you’re completely fine i don’t need the piano.” he hoped she was take a moment to relax, but soon he would have to face the facts that a lot of the younger employees were just too jumpy. “i was just going to ask what you were playing because it doesn’t sound like anything familiar, but i know some of you need your space so i’ll just leave you to. compose. or whatever it is you do. let me know if you need anything yeah? name’s stone so just yell and i’m sure i’ll hear ya.”

stella took nimble steps across the empty stage, feeling a pleasant weightiness in her chest that she usually only got when she watched singin’ in the rain; after a series of hopeless auditions and dead-end commercials, this opportunity felt like something real. perhaps the excitement of a lively new production got the best of her, a dreaminess that she never typically allowed herself to get swept up in, as the brunette traipsed and pranced around the stage– before she was jolted into reality by nearly knocking into somebody, the reverie broken and humiliation quickly setting in. “i, uh, i was just…,” plausible excuses escaped her, so she lamely settled on, “…— checking the durability of the floorboards. quite sturdy, they are.”

bluetooth situated in his ear, stone listened in to a conversation he had no part of as he made his was through the theater. catching sight of someone standing center stage, he glanced down at his watch. it was still really early for anyone to be in for the all-hands meeting and he frowned as he made his way down the aisle. whoever it was on the stage, simply paid him no mind as he hoisted himself up on the stage. approaching her cautiously, he opened his mouth to ask what the hell when she collided into him. reaching up to silence the conversation going on in his ear, he sighed. “are you alright?” at her excuse for being on the stage, he let out a light laugh. “yeah, i would hope so. though i’d have to put the entire structural reliability into question if a light thing like you fell through the stage and none of the machinery did. but nevermind that, what are you doing here? no one’s ever this early.”

kairi stared at the outside of the theater for a while, just soaking it all in. this is where she was going to be for the next few months and the feeling was exhilarating. who knew what the inside held for her and everyone else walking through the door. she walked up to the entrance and gave it a mighty, energetic push. it didn’t budge. she stared at it for a few moments before jumping to the side for the footsteps coming behind her. “sorry! you can go first, i was just doing…” her sentence trailed on as she noticed the ‘pull’ label on the door. great.

drink carrier splayed flat against the palm of his hand, stone turned the corner to the front of the theater. he was used to going in through the side, but since it was the first day, he didn’t want to startle any of the jumpier staff members but just appearing behind them. falling into step behind the girl before him, he watched blankly as she shoved at the door with an obvious handle. “i didn’t think people outside of bad sitcoms made mistakes like that. let me get that for you,” he said grabbing the ornate handle with his free hand and tugging the door open.

“y-yes. i said yes. i know. okay. yep. i know!” sterling’s eyes lifted to meet the person that stood in his doorway. “look. i know. stop. i’ll get you the money be the end of the mo- yes! the end of the month.” jamming the end call button, sterling’s phone dropped from his grasp. running his fingers through his hair, he let out a stressed sigh, keeping his gaze on the person before him. “what?”

stone listened to the one-sided conversation with clear disinterest. the words that escaped the theater owner’s lips nothing he hadn’t heard before. as far as stone was interested in hearing about it, this conversation was just another part of his routine. picking at the paint on the doorway with the blunt of his finger nail, it took him a moment to realize that sterling was off the phone. “oh, came to see what you wanted for lunch. i know,” he waved his hand in the general direction of the phone, “makes you moody, but i’m already going to pick stuff up for everyone so i figured you’d want something for later at least?”

tonight was supposed to be one of the first rehearsals and while it wasn’t exactly six p.m just yet, the redhead had decided to kill some time while she waited for more people to show up. letting her fingers run along the red velvet of the stage curtains, a small smile graced her features as she wandered into wardrobe department. letting a small squeal leave her lips, she shrugged out of her leather jacket and instantly grabbed a ( what she assumed ) was a princess gown costume type of thing and bounced up and down excitedly. maybe if she just slipped it on over her jeans, it wouldn’t hurt, right? slipping her shirt up and over her head, the petite redhead shimmied her way into the gown, hearing the door open behind her. “oh! this…this isn’t what it looks like but-,” she bit her lip, trying to suppress a grin. “does it look okay? i didn’t even know this stuff was back here.”

as an added measure of security, stone made quick rounds around the premises to make sure that the chances of a burglary while all the new staffers came together for the first time were as slim as possible. whistling a half-assed tune, he opened and shut down, jiggled windows, and knocked over mannequins incase anyone unsavory was around -- also fuck mannequins. pushing into the large workspace dominated by all the wardrobes, stone let out a surprised huff to see the redheaded girl alone. “okay great, i’m glad this is just some awful hallucination and i don’t have to explain that you look like one of those live action disney movies.” he took her inquiry to take in the full effect of the dress. “it looks like a dress.” he offered. “i mean, it’s the wardrobe department there’s also a fat suit somewhere around here.”

        shockingly, mac had shown up a few minutes early for rehearsal – he tended to prefer being fashionably late, but the walk had gone by faster than he’d thought it would. he quickly found a seat toward the stage and dropped down into it, long legs splayed across the aisle as he made himself comfortable and took a drink from the water bottle he’d brought along. one look at his expression made it clear that something was WRONG, and after a moment of silent suffering, mac finally offered an explanation: “ that wasn’t water. ” 

       checking off names as people filed into the theater at their own pace, stone nodded at a few people but kept his spot seated on the edge of the stage as he watched them form smaller groups. doing his best to match the small profile pictures to the various faces that shuffled by he caught sight of one of the stage hands. his focus barely lingered long enough to catch the down turn of lips. at the admittance, an easy grin tugged at the corners of his mouth as stone resisted the urge to laugh. “we’ve all been there man, granted i haven’t made that mistake since i turned twenty but -- where are you going where you need to smuggle in alcohol?”
