Dennyâs Exclusive - Cast Commentary On Filming In Bag End
A behind-the-scenes still of Martin and Peter Jackson covers the October 26 issue of The Hollywood Reporter, which features a piece on the long journey to The Hobbit and this bit on Martin:
But Jackson did want to stick with Freeman, who was a lead contender for the title role. Jackson felt that Freeman had an ineffable quality that made him right for the part. âHe is very hobbit-y in real life,â says Jackson. âI am, too. Iâm proud of it. You do not stray too far from your home, do not get involved in anything too adventurous or dangerous. I largely like to stay at home with my feet up, and Martin has a lot of those qualities.â
But all the delays seemingly had cost the production its leading man. Committed to a second season of the British series Sherlock, Freeman no longer was available. The search for Bilbo continued, but Jackson wasnât happy with anyone else. âI was lying in bed one morning unable to sleep, watching him on my iPad,â he remembers. âThis was right at the point that we literally had to cast Bilbo within a week or we wouldnât have an actor ready to shoot with us. I just thought, âWe are in so much trouble.â â
So Jackson decided to act. âI usually donât deal with agents,â he says. âBut I called Martinâs agent, and I said, âLook, do you think Martin would be interested in doing this if we could find a way to actually have a break in our filming so he could do the Sherlock shoot?â â The answer was yes.
Still in Bilbo garb during a break in filming Hobbit, Freeman says heâs relieved that it worked out, though he had doubts about being away from his home in England for the many months that would be required. But ultimately, he says, âIt was too big a ship. I didnât want it to leave without me.â Told that Jackson has described him as hobbit-y, Freeman seems to disapprove. âI think heâs more hobbit-y than I am,â he says. âHe probably missed the boat on playing Bilbo.â

The Hobbit Cast -Â
Iâm more mature as an actress; thatâs what made me want to play her again. Peter called me and thought I might not accept the role. I told him âAre you kidding me? Of course I will!â Galadriel is a special character to me, mythic and fascinating. It was as enjoyable to shoot as Lord of the Rings. When I wore the elf ears again, I had this wonderful feeling of dejĂĄ vĂș. I couldnât stop laughing. I was very young when I played Galadriel. I hope to have evolved, to be a better actress, person and mother. Professionally I think Iâm much more flexible now, and easier to work with. I know Peter thinks so! (laughs) Come Christmas the audience will be able to decide for themselves.
