I have to agree with Nanny Ashtoreth here, Brother Francis is rather cute looking, in a silly way.
I miss drawing these two, I need to do it more, but I need more ideas…!

“Disney saying Loki is genderfluid and then not showing it on screen is queerbaiting!” when good omens shown genderfluidity in canonically nonbinary character on screen ya’ll called it transphobic
preach! i didn’t dare speak about my opinions back when good omens came out but as i’ve been very vocal about the mistakes of the loki show i can’t ignore the only other mainstream genderfluid character. people were saying when crowley was nanny ashtoreth it was ‘transphobic’ and it really just felt like that came from a place of
1. transmisogyny as i saw many people saying she didn’t look enough like a woman which is fucked up a trans woman or female-identifying genderfluid person doesn’t owe you femininity. frankly, it was more empowering that crowley didn’t shape-shift into a female form, so either using cgi to ‘feminize’ david tennant or cast a female actor, because that implies that crowley, and any genderfluid person, would have to shape-shift in order to be a different gender. real genderfluid people can’t do that and fictional genderfluid shape-shifters like crowley and loki do not owe you a vagina and breasts in order for you to call them a woman
2. fluidphobia. plain and simple. many didn’t believe or want to believe that crowley was genderfluid and so saw a ‘man in drag’ and said it was ‘transphobic’ for a male character to ‘pretend to be a woman’. some people thought this scene was a joke, a gag where we were meant to laugh at how ridiculous it was that crowley was a woman. it was never a gag. if you laughed, you are a fluidphobe and a transphobe. the ‘gag’ was that crowley based his nanny uniform off mary poppins because he probably has no idea what a real normal nanny looks or behaves like, the gag is not that he is a woman. and no this isn’t my opinion, it’s facts that neil gaiman has confirmed. and if it was a gag, why is crowley female in another scene that no one laughed at? crowley is female at the crucifixion scene, we know this because only women wore headscaves like that in that time period and neil gaiman confirmed this.
Aziraphale doesn’t have the heart to tell her that they won’t be needing a nanny, this time around.
“Don’t listen to them, listen to me.”
I know it’s speculated that Nanny and Francis are their own characters in the book, but the show, radio drama, and even the musical has them as Crowley and Aziraphale and… well…
I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist, this is me we’re talking about, I love me some Nanny Crowley content.
Nanny’s design is based a bit on Mary Poppins still, but I also liked the idea of a governess look to her as well. Francis is a bumbling farm boy look that also seems to make it appear like he somehow works around books too.
Normally, my Aziraphale has pale blond hair, but I figured he’d think it was wiser to go with his natural dark locks (his hair contains his halo so it’s artificially blond) because he doesn’t want anyone to recognize him, for some reason. Also, it’s fun to draw him like that.

So I’ve been having some thoughts about Nanny Ashtoreth. Specifically, how she’s portrayed in visual art. I’m going to preface this by saying that, while I know identity politics on tumblr often hinge a lot on the speaker’s relevant identity/ies, I’m not going to disclose my gender, and that’s just how it’s going to be.
Anyway.
The thing is, I’ve been lurking around the Good Omens fandom for a little while now, and something’s bugged me about how a lot of people draw Nanny Ashtoreth for most of that time, and I think I’ve finally figured out what the Thing is. Basically, a lot of people seem to make her look more feminine to the point that she no longer resembles… herself. Now, I know that resemblance isn’t the end-all be-all of fanart, so this post isn’t about stylized art, and it’s definitely not about Book Omens. It’s about realistic and semi-realistic art of TV!Nanny Ashtoreth. But the point is, it just seems suspect to me when one draws Nanny Ashtoreth according to her design in the TV show, and then she looks like a generic attractive white woman.
Because one of the things I really love about Nanny Ashtoreth in Good Omens is that she’s allowed to not fit cis beauty standards. (Now, I realize there’s a whole other question about David Tennant playing a genderfluid character when to my knowledge he’s never come out as anything but a cis man, but there’s a lot of stuff on that subject going around now and I have thoughts but that’s not the purpose of this post, nor am I sure I’m comfortable sharing said thoughts.) She looks like herself, and it’s generally agreed that she’s gorgeous. And I love that so much!
But that means that something feels… odd, when she her face is made more conventionally attractive and feminine to the point that she no longer resembles David Tennant at all. Like, some tweaking and romanticizing is to be expected, but she’s not a generic attractive woman! She has a hooked nose, and thin lips, and asymmetrical eyebrows, and a receding hairline, and wrinkles, and taking them away is just reinforcing harmful beauty standards. She should be allowed to be herself, and not have those characteristics taken away to make her sexually appealing!
Anyway. I’m not hating on anyone in particular—it’s more a theme I’ve seen in general. And I could be wrong here, so if anyone has thoughts on this phenomenon I’d love to hear them. I just… it feels wrong taking away everything that makes her unique so she’s more palatable, especially when it erases the unique way Good Omens interacts with gender. And I think there might be a conversation to be had there.
Hm well I’ve been not that active in the Good Omens fandom of late, and so I’m not going to say that there aren’t artists who are changing how Ashtoreth looks, but most of the art I can think of draws her looking like David Tennant does. I can imagine that there would be art out there where she looks more like a ‘traditional beauty’ though I wonder how much art style comes into it? If someone draws in an anime art style then everyone sort of looks the same without any distinct features. And I’ve seen plenty people draw Crowley like that regardless of how he’s presenting. I wonder how much is just some artists having a more catoonish or simplified style.
I’m not saying there isn’t art like that out there, but if you’re wanting to see more art of her that looks more like how she actually looks in the show I’m sure there must be some that you’ll like the in the #fanart tag of this blog.
I totally understand what you mean, and especially with the nose shape. I have a hooked nose and I know what it feels like to feel that you’re unattractive because of it and it does hurt me when I see a lot of artist drawing any sort of fanart where they give characters all the same standard nose shape. Since I started making an effort to draw different noses in my art I’ve come to absolutely adore nose shapes, that might sound weird, but honestly strong noses are one of my favourite features now. And I remember seeing this stupid argument thrown around and I don’t know that it still is, but back when the show first came out I saw people saying that anyone drawing Crowley/Ashtoreth with a hooked nose was antisemitic because they were giving a demon a hooked nose and that literally is not the case. People draw Crowley with a hooked nose because he’s played by an actor who has a hooked nose. People already have this idea that hooked noses are ugly enough, we shouldn’t be erasing them from actors and characters who have them.
And before anyone thinks I’m dismissing anything, for anyone that’s forgotten this blog is run by a genderfluid person, hi hello, so one I want to say I personally don’t have a problem with David Tennnant playing the Crowley/Ashtoreth and while yes a non-binary actor would be amazing, I also am not going to hold any hate against the man.

I was watching the Simpsons with my sister and we joked at this one moment was Francis and Nanny and, well, I had to draw it up, haha.
A maid walked in on them attempting to do… something, and this was their reactions to being caught.

Hi! Just dropping by to say I have a ineffably-odd parents fic on ao3 titled That's How Became The Nanny. It's mostly domestic fluff and healthy dom/sub dynamics, with the eventual n/sfw that comes with it, of course. Very niche, but someone might like it ❤
Oooo nice, I’ll have to go check it out! Thanks for letting me know about it, I’m sure some people here will be into it!
