The Use Of Disney Worlds For KH Themes
It's so interesting how Kingdom Hearts will utilise the Disney Worlds to further help the narrative of the current game, picking stories with similar themes and that could mirror Sora's (or other protagonists') journey.
We start with KHI and we have Alice in Wonderland, Tarzan, Aladdin, Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Peter Pan. They all share a common theme of "home"! Missing home after falling into a new, strange world, protecting your home from harm, finding a new one, feeling trapped in it and finally being able to return. These of course all serve to explore Sora's own feelings about Destiny Island, but all those Worlds also share characters discovering new things, learning new lessons and most important of all, they were all "ignorant" at first. "One who knows nothing can't understand nothing"!
In KHII some new Worlds are Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, Pirates of the Carribbean, The Lion King and Tron, all movies about "Identity", "Metamorphosis" and "Coming into your own", but also star protagonists who will put themselves in harm's way to protect those they love. They're perfect Worlds to go along Sora and Roxas, their separation and reunion and the more "on edge" feel we get from Sora in this game.
In KH BBS we go back in time, both story wise and with the Worlds we explore! Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty are all timeless classics and some of the first Disney movies, mirroring the story of Terra, Aqua and Ventus. They're classic fairy tales with miscommunication and an inevitable dread slithering through them, all the heroines have the odds against them and end up in vicious predicaments. Yet their hearts will stay strong and, in time, they'll be saved and that's quite literally what happened to the three keyblade wielders! Honourable mentions are Peter Pan which is a story about believing (our protagonists had both a lot and a great lack of trust in each other) and Lilo & Stitch with its theme of found/chosen family and the hardships of navigating one (pretty much what happened to them).
KH 3D offers us The Three Musketeers, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pinocchio, Fantasia and Tron, all stories focusing on rescuing either someone dear or oneself from impending doom, but also about the importance of friendship and how connections can help us heal. Pretty fitting considering Sora's journey throughout the game and Riku's quest to save him.
Lastly KH III has Hercules, Toy Story, Rapunzel, Monster & Co, Frozen, Pirates of the Caribbean and Big Hero 6, all stories about self discovery, self acceptance and deeply strong bonds BUT most importantly, they're all about learning how to move forward through the pain and towards the future. You know, kinda like having to face the fact you'll have to disappear if you want to save everyone you ever loved...
AND NOW we have the first World of this upcoming KH IV and it's COCO! Which already seems like a perfect fit for a story that could probably be centered around "death", remembrance and reunions? What other Disney story could be perfect fits for this? Personally I think movies like Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, The Princess and The Frog, Up or even Onward could be good picks with similar themes but who knows, what do you think? We for sure are not getting rid of the Olympus tho AHAHA
