If it be for science, I too shall have to provide data acquired in a scientifically responsible method.
Research question: “How tall was Vincent Phantomhive as a fully grown adult in life?” For this research, I shall employ the method of cross-measurement using computer pixels and physical comics on full-body images of the research object. The obtained data shall then be converted to centimetres, and finally I shall yield a conclusive result in the official measure unit of body heights in the universe of ‘Black Butler’: unit Sebas (Toboso, 2013).
Hypothesis: “Vincent Phantomhive was at full height somewhere below one full Sebas unit.”
For this research I shall primarily focus on the two portraits portraying the height reference object Sebastian Michaelis (1.0 Sebas = 186cm), and the research object Vincent Phantomhive.
Research 1: Pixel Measurement Method
The chairs depicted in the portraits are the identical object, and therefore have identical measurements. Using cutting edge technology - open source image editing programme ‘Paint.NET’ - I have overlaid the two images to find the correct proportions by scaling them using the size of the chair.
Now we have successfully found the corresponding proportions, we can start to compare Vincent Phantomhive to the Sebas unit.
A straight line drawn from the top of Michaelis’ head to the heel of his gravity point (right foot) is 651 pixels.
We shall take the average of 3.5cm for the heels of men’s Oxford shoes, and add it to Sebastian’s height of 186cm, resulting in 189.5cm. Now we have established that 651px equates to 189.5cm. By dividing 651 by 189.5, we come to the number 3.44, meaning that 3.44px equates to 1cm.
Now we shall measure the research object using the same method as above.
From top to the point of gravity, the research object measures to be 625 pixels. We shall divide 625 by the 1cm equivalent of 3.44px, yielding 181,95. Phantomhive appears to be wearing the same type of shoes, so here too we shall detract 3.5cm, resulting in 178,5cm. Dividing 178.5cm by the unit Sebas results in 0.96. To conclude, Vincent Phantomhive is 0.96s tall.
However, is this measurement reliable? In order to test the reliability of the research above, I shall now conduct a cross measurement examination using the infallible measuring method of ‘Comic Book Relativity’.
Research 2: Comic Book Relativity
The second measuring method I shall employ is the Comic Book Relativity method. In the image provided by Toboso in 2011, we can see Deidrich holding 23 samples of the ‘Black Butler’ comic books, which I shall call the measure unit “Deidrich Stack” (ds).
For this research, I too have collected 23 samples of the comics, and measured the exact height of the Deidrich Stack. The result yielded is 31.6cm exactly.
In order to test whether the difference in volume thickness would matter, I have made a random selection and extracted the volumes 2, 5, 9, 16, 19, and 22 from the pile, and replaced these 6 volumes with the volumes 24-29. The measurement of the new stack of 23 volumes too resulted in exactly 31.6cm.
Now we can safely conclude that 1 Deidrich Stack (1ds) equates to 31.6cm.
Now that the reliability of the Deidrich Stack size calculation has been tested, we can proceed with our measurements of the research object.
Unfortunately, the image with Vincent and Deidrich is not a full body shot, so in order to simulate the actual proportions in full-body height, I have overlaid the two respective photographs and aligned them using the points of the object’s top of the head, and his shoulders.
Now that we have found the relative proportions of the two photographs, we can apply the comparative measurements of the comic books. From the top of the head to the centre of gravity, the research object measures 4 stacks of 23 volumes, and another stack of 11 volumes (4.48ds). 4.48 + 31.6cm = 141.57cm.
Of course we cannot measure how far behind the research object Deidrich is standing, so we cannot apply measurements with foreshortening in consideration. However, the proximity between the two objects is close enough to conclude that the result of the calculation of Vincent’s height should not differ dramatically.
To conclude, using the Comic Book Relativity measuring method and taking foreshortening in consideration, Vincent Phantomhive is between 141.6cm and 145cm tall. This number shall be averaged to 143cm.
In this research I have tried to determine the height of the research object Vincent Phantomhive during full-grown adulthood. Using cross-examination of the Pixel Measurement Method and the Comic Book Relativity Measurement Method, the results obtained are 178.5cm and ± 143cm respectively.
In order to come to a final estimation of the research object’s height, I shall combine the two data, and extract an average.
178.5 + 143 = 321.5/2 = 160.8cm.
To conclude, Vincent Phantomhive’s estimated height through cross research is 160.8cm, which equates to 0.86 Sebas.
The hypothesis of “Vincent Phantomhive was at his tallest in life somewhere below one full Sebas unit,” is now proven valid and true.
