sometimes keigo wonders whether he was born with a piece missing. a vital survival mechanism, gone: try as he might, he cannot hold a grudge. rationally, he knows that's impossible. it's far more likely that they programmed it out of him; stripped it from him along with his name. probably for the best. grudges only serve to make you messy, unfocused. what good is a vendetta to a weapon?

still, it can be fun to play the part. in another life, hawks might have fancied himself an actor, a movie star. the villain, the every - man, the romantic lead — he could do it all, instead of being trapped in the role of soldier, the so - called hero. for the sake of his own childish amusement, hawks treats the world as his stage. tonight's play is rivalry, and sephiroth his unwitting leading lady. such a lovely scene partner, he finds himself thinking. no wonder their bosses favour her so — the girl has a face built for the silver screen. if only she wasn't so quiet.

"you didn't have a choice?" hawks parrots her words back at her, rocking back and forth on his heels, arms folded behind his head. "is that right?" his tone may be pointed, but his amber eyes stay bright, mischievous. as much as their handlers might encourage distrust, it isn't there. he's only playing. "you have free will, don'tcha, angel? all you've gotta do is say no. shake your head."

that isn't fair, and they both know it. things will never be that simple. the pair of them are just pawns — sacrificial tools with no real influence. hawks is awarded a little more freedom to spread his wings than sephiroth, but the cage is never truly open. he's starting to doubt that it ever will be.

hawks spreads his wings out behind him, a scattering of scarlet feathers escaping and falling to the ground. it's a gesture intended to make him look bigger, intimidating almost, but he imagines the effect to be lost on sephiroth. no matter what he does, the girl towers over him. would he even register as a threat, if he was truly angry? is he but a blip on her radar?

"seriously, sephi." the nickname slips out before he can stop himself, the familiarity burning his throat as it escapes him. the pair aren't close by any means — the powers that be prefer to keep their toys separate — but they have shared lived experiences. birds of a feather; he can't help but feel attached to her. "you can't keep taking credit for my work. i know it isn't your fault, you don't make that call, but," hawks rubs a hand over his face, exasperated. "it's not exactly fair."

"besides, don't you ever get tired of all the false glory?" he cocks his head to one side as he speaks, watching her reactions closely. he doesn't want to upset her. that's the last thing he wants. but to rile her up, well . . . that could be fun. "don't get me wrong: anything i can do, you can do just as well. maybe better! i don't doubt that for a second." his mouth curls up into a daring grin, egging her on. "i'm hearing a lot of talk about you, and all your power and potential. but i'd really like to see you prove that sometime."

ANSWER . the expectation. you arrive already reading the room. who needs reassurance. who expects competence. who is quietly hoping you’ll fill a gap they won’t name. you adapt instinctively, almost reflexively - sliding into what’s required before anyone asks. people feel understood by you. seen. held. sometimes too quickly. they mistake your attunement for availability, your flexibility for obligation. the work here is remembering that you are allowed to enter without performing. that your presence does not have to be useful to be valid.

jeez, hawks wants to say, who died and made you king? still, he bites his tongue. he's never enjoyed conflict, preferring to dodge it at every turn. and he really, really doesn't want to piss off the head of the gojo clan. although, the man isn't nearly as intimidating as hawks had anticipated — he has this laid - back, care - free air about him. although, there isn't much left to care about when you're the strongest, hawks supposes. that isn't to say that satoru gojo isn't dangerous. power practically radiates off of him. hawks feels it in his body more than his mind; his cursed energy high, alert.

still, he wants gojo in his corner. hawks comes from nothing, the (practically) orphaned child of nobodies. his cursed technique is impressive, sure, but he doesn't have a clan to boost his reputation. so far, all he's had to rely on is the so - called 'goodwill' of the higher - ups. but hawks is far from stupid. he knows you are only as powerful as your allies — so of course he has set his sights on satoru gojo.

"you're pretty bossy, y'know." he keeps his tone light, a grin permanently etched onto his face. this is hawks' favourite mask to wear - the clown, the easy - going bachelor. if he wears it long enough, maybe he'll start to believe in it. "must be used to people doing what you tell 'em to." hawks laughs, holding up his hands, a surrender. "not judging you at all! that's gotta be fun."

he keeps his wings summoned while they talk. it's probably definitely a waste of cursed energy, but he wants gojo to see them, to understand his power. on top of that, they're flashy, eye - catching, and distracting. the type of thing that holds your attention, stops you from digging too deep below the surface. it's no secret that gojo has . . . a distaste for the higher - ups, for jujutsu headquarters. if he finds out hawks has connections to them, well, their budding friendship could be over before it even began.

"why sushi, anyway?" it's not exciting, or particularly expensive, unless he's planning to drag him somewhere fancy. clearly, gojo isn't trying to impress him. "just a whim? just what you're feeling today? or . . . " hawks fans his wings out behind his back, fluttering them lightly, putting on a show. "be honest, is it a bird thing? because i'll let you in on a little secret," he drops his voice to a hushed tone, leaning in towards gojo (as best he can, satoru's height makes him feel tiny) and mock -whispering: "i'm not actually a hawk. my diet's a hell of a lot more varied than theirs."
