Since there are so many classic fics within the fandom. I’m gonna recommend five to get you started. Sorry for getting to this late and hopefully you haven’t read these but here we go. Here are some classic fanfics that everyone who loves has probably already read:
1) Dirty Laundry | By: Anonymous | Completed | 85,042 words | Mature
“Two whole months of free laundry in exchange for two weeks of being my fake boyfriend. Deal?”
Keith hesitated for a moment. Was this really worth it? Hardly. Lance was an asshole, and he wasn’t sure what fake dating would entail. But, free laundry was free laundry, right?
“Alright, it’s a deal.”Or: Lance makes the mistake of telling his Mom he has a boyfriend coming home with him for Christmas. Keith makes the mistake of agreeing to be Lance’s ‘fake boyfriend’.
This is a must read. I think almost everyone in this fandom has read this fic at some point and honestly its worth the read. Whenever you hear someone mention “Oh this reminds me of Dirty Laundry.” They’re talking about this fic. Its almost an unspoken requirement for people to read this honestly.
2) The Marks We Make | By: Wittyy_name | Ongoing | 145,760 words | Mature
Lance McClain constantly dreams of the day he’ll finally meet his mysterious soulmate. They don’t say much, if anything at all, but they leave him with gorgeous paintings temporarily tattooing his skin. It’s not exactly the situation he hoped for, but when he feels the connection between them, he can’t bring himself to resent them. As much as he wishes his soulmate would just talk to him, he’s resigned himself to being patient. In the meantime, he has a loving family and good friends to help him get by.
Keith Kogane dreads the day he’ll finally meet his obnoxious soulmate. He’s just an art student who’s struggling to find his place in the world. There’s so much he hasn’t been able to control in his life, and the thought of having a soulmate, just another thing in his life which he also has no control over yet can’t do anything about, is a little terrifying. So he ignores the words that occasionally appear on his skin. He has other things to focus on: like being a new student at a big university where his childhood friend and step-brother go.
Honestly, almost everything that this author has made for this fandom has become popular. This one is just probably my favorite work of theirs. Once you read this definitely check out everything else Klance they’ve written and you wont regret it.
3) What A Healing Pod Can’t Repair | By: Remember_Me | Completed | 55,777 words | Teen & Up Audiences
The compromised wormhole was ripping apart at the seams, sending everyone spiraling away in completely different directions. Lance could feel himself being pulled and bent in ways he was definitely not supposed to be.
Stitching the team back together after everyone is separated is difficult, and for one Paladin rescue wouldn’t be coming for a very long time.
So, this takes place after episode 11 of season 1 when everyone is kinda thrown around and let me tell you. You need to prepare yourself to read this. That’s all I shall say.
4) of florists and tennis shoes | By: venpast | Completed | 63,783 words | Teen & Up Audiences
‘Lance wasn’t sure if he’d imagined the brief tremble at the corner of Keith’s lips or not, that slight stutter that promised a smile. But before he could guess further, Keith gave his knee a shove and got to his feet. He reached out to him, “I’m done here, and I’ve still got some daisies to sell you.”“Yeah,” Lance agreed, looking down at the extended palm, noting the little Saturn tattoo on the inside of Keith’s wrist where the sleeve hiked. He took the hand, “better not overprice those too, you asshole.”’(in which lance is a broke university student trying to impress a pretty girl with flowers, but ends up falling for the florist that sells them instead.)
You know, I thought this was a pretty popular fic, but then I saw that it only had 104,000 hits. If you haven’t read this. What are you doing with your life. Its such a good fic and its one that I love so very much. So please read it.
5) Water Cast | By: Fishwrites | Ongoing | 130,494 words | Mature
Shiro has been a Galra prisoner for over a year; with his flight feathers clipped and unable to fly. Desperate to escape, he jumps overboard while being transported to the capitol on a Galran ship. Lance is a merman who saves him from drowning. Keith thinks Shiro is about to become mermaid dinner. Hunk just wants Lance to
stop going to the surface all the time, dammit!
(AU where Avians (winged folk), Galra, humans and merfolk cohabit earth. Shiro and Keith are avian soldiers, Lance is the youngest son of a Queen, Hunk is also a merman and Pidge is still looking for her family. They get caught up in a war.)
Read this, you wont be sorry.
6) Follow My Lead | By: Klancekorner | Completed | 117,792 words | Mature
Becoming “hook-up buddies” with Lance Sanchez was just supposed to be a small, insignificant fraction of Keith’s life. But of course, things don’t work out that way at all. aka a Friends w/ Benefits AU that nobody asked for where Lance wears sleeveless hoodies, plays basketball in abandoned parking lots, and follows his dreams, and Keith comes from a high class, reputable family who never let him have any dreams of his own. They go home with each other and don’t expect it to matter until it totally does.Keith POV and Lance POV
So, I know I said I would recommend five fics BUT, this is one that I think everyone in the fandom should read because its so good. Its well written and I love it so much, you should read this.
