guys I had this realization the other day that Redwall works really well for reading aloud, and kinda half-remembered something about the author reading to kids? So I looked it up to see if I had made a connection.
And it turns out, yes, actually, because he read aloud to kids at a school for the blind. But all the books they gave him to read were depressing. So he wrote Redwall, a story about heroism and courage and making it through struggles, and filled it with so many sensory, visual details so he could give them something better and I just-- that's so wholesome-- help
i remember reading the Redwall books as a kid and noticing that they talk about food all the time. like, both that food and eating keep coming up in the dialogue, and also that characters have tons of feasts where every dish is described. at the time, i think i found it a little repetitive but now i realize he was probably lingering on those details because he knew sense of taste was something his audience could access and appreciate, and that is in fact very—well, sweet.
from the Redwall cookbook
Oh! This reminds me of something I read about The Wind in the Willows! Like Redwall, there’s a lot of emphasis on the non-visual senses. Which makes perfect sense given that much of it is told from the perspective of a mole and other creatures that rely on hearing and smell more than sight.
But also, Kenneth Grahame based the book in part on stories he wrote for his son, who was partially blind.
I’m pretty sure TWITW would have been an influence to some degree on Jacques’ work as well.
MEGAN THEE STALLION — The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (2024)
Went to the Aboriginal artifact exhibit in Chicago. And it’s interesting. How many blankets and masks and totem poles say ‘unknown source’, because every five seconds my mom would stop and point to something and say. “Pauline’s grandmother made that,” or, “That belongs to Mike’s family, I should call him” because. It’s all stolen
“These artifacts were excavated by archaeologists from a burial site in the 1970’s. The remains were returned for reinterment” Okay cool, cool cool. So you just, like. Dug up the grave of a respected family member, stripped them naked, mailed their body back to their family and kept everything they were lovingly put to rest in. Like a graverobbing bastard
Reminds me of the time when of the elders from my hometown started touching a totem pole in the Museum of Anthropology out at UBC and got yelled at by the staff, only to tell him that the pole had been stolen off of the front of her bighouse when she was ten years old.
Museum collectors did the equivalent of kidnapping a family member when they were away fishing.
The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act requires all institutions that receive federal funding to repatriate remains and artifacts so if you can identify the source of something on display absolutely get a hold of that institute’s repatriation office
Please don’t skip
I am Karim from Gaza, I am 22 years old, a student in the College of Nursing.
I have two brothers, Aboud, who is 10 years old, and Hala, who is almost 12 years old.
My parents are elderly. We are living a tragedy in the October War.
My little brother suffers from malnutrition. My mother lost my brother a few years ago due to the 2014 war.
His name is Aboud as well. She gave birth again and named him Aboud after my brother who died due to the wars on Gaza.
We do not want to lose my second brother. You are our hope. We need your help in order to escape death and live in safety and peace.
We do not want more than to feel safe. I am working to raise money for my family.
I need money to save them from death. We are here in certain death every minute.
Please help us. Hope will be spent on food and the largest part will be spent on passing through the crossing to exit Gaza and part on providing temporary housing.
I need you. My family and I need you.
Every donation saves a family.

Help a disabled woman to keep her utilities on!!!
Monday, October 21st: Hello, everyone. I’m Gem, a bi, mentally ill, and disabled woman in desperate need of help as I'm struggling to keep my utilities on, which are almost out of credit!!!
I apologize for asking for help again; but since my last update, things have become a bit more difficult for me as my utilities went out over the weekend, and due to a storm, power went out in my area and it's only recently come back on. During that time, my accounts became overdrawn, and I wasn't able to top-up my utilities as much as I would have liked to, and I'm now back into "friendly credit" which will last me at least a day or two.
Additionally, due to the powercut, my refrigerated food isn't safe for me to eat, and I need help to replace it until the 31st when I receive my welfare!!
I'm so sorry, but this is extremely urgent, and I could use some help, if anyone could spare any amount to help me, even if it’s just £1/$1, it would save my life, and sharing definitely helps just as much.
Thank you again for all your help & support!!

Since I have to be here to beg for housing anyway, can I say I am so deeply concerned for the state of reading and literature? And like, obviously we're not doomed, I spent most Sundays sitting outside or in cafes with hundreds of readers who are reading a wide variety of genres, but to come online and see people rightfully go "hey! Maybe don't read the words of zionists and transmisogynists!" and the response always be "let people have fun!"
Babes. The world is burning around us. Our government wants us stupid. Women are being forced back into the home and are being denied their basic rights. Trans people are being slaughtered. There is, at this moment, five genocides I'm currently aware of, not to mention the slow genocide of Black Americans... Read a big girl book. Read something that challenges your brain, like let's think!

i don't think most people realize how bad things in rafah have truly gotten. we all already know israel has desecrated its own vow that rafah would be the "safe zone" in every way imaginable, but i can't describe how gut-wrenching it is to read about 12 iof soldiers infiltrating the rafah crossing under the guise of an aid truck just a day or so ago. again--they entered rafah with the pretense that they would be supplying starved, displaced people food
this is just now breaking, but i can't fathom how many palestinians got lured out w the promise of feeding their families--only to massacred then and there, never to be heard from again. likely their bodies won't ever be returned to the families. how can anyone read this and not be absolutely horrified
i am constantly thinking about maryam and her family whenever i read up on the news in rafah, so guys please please continue donating maryam's fundraiser. maryam and her toddler children are living in the heart of rafah; in the heart of the destruction and uncertainty and starvation. there is quite literally nowhere else for them to go, unless they raise the necessary funds to meet egypt's exorbitant prices and evacuate. i cannot stress enough how dire and time sensitive this campaign is. maryam's fundraiser has been getting little to no traction, and she truly could use all the help she could get
there's been barely any donations in the past 16 hours. Maryam's husband who's been hit multiple times in the head and neck by iof missile shrapnel is fading fast. Maryam has been starving herself so the orphans in her care and her husband could get the food and treatment they need.
please help Maryam get to 6k and beyond ASAP. the campaign has been stagnant every other hour, it's really horrifying to see despite how dangerous and expensive it is just to survive. Currently at €5,621 / €6,000 short term goal. That's €379 needed immediately.
