When something crashlands behind the garage, it never crosses Raven Reyes’ mind that it might be a goddamn alien. But when she sees a girl with glowing eyes and flaming hands sitting cross-legged in a crater, there’s no doubt about it.

She learns that the girl is from a faraway planet though she never gives a name and that her ship was damaged in a battle and well, Raven might have only been taught how to fix up vehicles from Earth, but if anyone is going to fix an alien ship, it’ll be her.

Falling in love had never been part of a plan and she knows that it’ll be a hard goodbye, she guesses the most she can ask for is for Luna to come back for her sometimes.

The Abyss Surrounds Us - Sea Mechanic AU

For Raven Reyes, bossing around sea monsters is just the family business. She’s been a Reckoner trainer-in-training ever since she could walk, raising the genetically-engineered beasts to defend ships as they cross the pirate-infested NeoPacific. Raven’s first solo mission is supposed to be a simple journey, working with a sea monster she’s known from birth to defend a cruise, but when pirates attack, she finds herself hostage on a pirate ship.

There’s no time to mourn everyone slaughtered and everyone left stranded on the bloodsoaked decks. Waiting for her on the pirate ship is an unhatched Reckoner pup. The Queen of the boat plans to take back the seas with a monster of her own and to do that, she needs a proper trainer. She orders Raven to raise the pup, ensure he imprints on their boat and to teach him to fight for the pirates under the threat that if she fails, it’ll be her blood that paints the sea next.

But it won’t just be hers because, from day one, Raven finds her life tied to that of one of the Queen’s proteges, Luna. She’s under orders to keep Raven and the pup alive, and if either of them fails their mission, they’ll both be on the chopping block. Despite Luna’s cold exterior, Raven soon finds herself taking comfort in the other girl, especially as they’re forced to share a bed every night. Falling in love with her is the easiest thing she’s ever done, but what comes after will be much harder because their relationship is just one more thing from the Pirate Queen to use to manipulate them.

They’re both tied to the ship in their own ways, Raven to keep alive and Luna to provide for her family. There’s no running away into the sunset together, and Raven begins to fear that there’s no happy ending for them, just special moments between them that are far and few in between.
