I really donāt usually do pictures in this style. This was very much a 1 off for me. But I do like how it came out.Ā
This is Salvistar, the god of war, from the Green Rider book series. It used to be my favorite book series of all time. I was obsessed with it for years, it was probably by far my strongest, longest lived obsession. However, IMO the quality of writing and of the story in general really went down hill around book ¾. I never read past that. I am waiting for the series to be completed, to see what other super fans say about the final book. If it has a good ending, and itās worth it, I will read the whole series. But until then, it simply simmers in the back of my mind. I donāt really do art or anything for it anymore.Ā

what I saw
I realize there are maybe six other people in this fandom, but Iām halfway through the new Green Rider and let me tell you, I am not okay with the amount of near-death experiences Kariganās already had.
*Winterlight Spoilers Ahead*
Iām about halfway through Winterlight and I would like to strangle Connly for the way heās treating Karigan. Iām sure thereās a reason behind his behavior besides him just being a jerk and unreasonably, but I really donāt like him right now.
Also, the way Karigan is always getting āspecial honorsā and horrible situations thrust upon her gives me strong Harry Potter vibes. The girl just wants some rest (and her King to be unwed).
Started reading the new Green Rider book Winterlight last night! Itās so good. I read 200 pages in one night. I cannot be stopped.
Itās here!
Book Reviews : Winterlight
Book Reviews :Ā Winterlight
Winterlight is the latest and penultimate entry in the Green Rider series. After really enjoying my reread of Firebrand, which I thought showed a substantial improvement in writing, I felt that Winterlight, though enjoyable to the point that I stayed up until 4am reading my ARC, was a step backwards. Winterlight doesnāt feel as well thought out to me as earlier books in the series, and againā¦

Out of curiosity, would people be interested in a Green Rider Discord, especially with Winterlight releasing so soon? I don't know a lot about running a Discord, but it's gotta beat sorting through a social media feed of wildly varying topics.
There is one!
I donāt know much about running a discord either, but weāre small enough that itās never been a problem so far. I donāt know much about being a community organisator either, so itās not very active, but occasionally people are talking :D

mirror sight came out 7 years ago, blackveil 10 years ago. I remember waiting in agony for years to read about what happened after Karigan woke up stuck in a sarcophagus. I remember *writing post-BV fanfiction* as a bby 15 year old. I didn't feel that young at the time. And now winterlight comes out in less than a month.
Got the sudden urge to participate in NaNoWriMo with a half-finished fic from four years ago lads
look, I love the Green Rider series with all that I am but I think it needs to be more inclusive. Like everyone in power and the important people and theĀ āgoodā people are all seemingly white, cis and het and like I love the book series so so so much but that aspect is a little disappointing, especially since like the last installment was like published in 2017. I could be wrong about this, like maybe Iām overlooking some specifics and Iām more than willing to have a conversation with people and find out where Iām wrong. I also want to say that I am still reading Blackveil so who knows, maybe things change?
Hi there! You are absolutely right.
Re: LGBT rep, thereās the scene in the brothel in High Kingās Tomb when a background character makes a pass at Karigan and I think it was during this that she thinks about a gay couple back home in Corsa. Thatās it as far as youāve read so far, no recurring LGBT characters. As @caedharlowe said in the tags, thereās a reveal about a minor recurring character at the end of book 7.
Re: overwhelming whiteness, all Sacoridians are implied white. I donāt remember if anything is said about Rhovanny? Then thereās the Cloud Islands where Kariganās father goes for trade and which seem to be kind of a magical Caribbean. But theyāre just background info.
Then of course thereās the unfortunate implication of whiteness = beauty with the Eletians (as with all elves Iāve hard of so far).
A thought I had when the Sacoridian history is revealed in First Riderās Call, how there was an empire to the east across the ocean that came with āsuperiorā engineering and the ability to make us of a natural force (magic) in an industrial way and wanted to conquer: That reminded me of English conquests in America. So, following this train of thought, Sacoridia is what you get when the empire doesnāt succeed at conquering the land. It could be read as kind of a fantasy AU alternate history of America. If seen in that light it makes all Sacoridians being white ⦠boring at best, rather disappointing and I donāt know about the topic to judge if itās harmful. (I donāt actually think the author was aware of the parallel, I assume she just went āyou know what would be neat? thisā. But itās interesting to think through possible parallels and implications.)
I am so dormant in this fandom for so long, but I do have Thoughts. wrt Rhovanny; ā[Braymer Coyle] was dark haired and complected; as many Rhovans were, with smooth handsome features and brown eyes.ā [HKT, p25] Their culture is āfar more conservative... in regard to its beliefs and customs, and a womanās place in society, than Sacoridia.ā [HKT, p27], and its rare for women to own businesses, and unheard of to serve the royalty in a uniformed capacity. women bearing swords is immodest, and such women are treated as mentally disturbed. I remember something about Rhovannyās version of Sevelon being a woman while Sacoridiaās is a man, and Karigan noting the irony.
āDeep bronze skinā is indicative of the Cloud Islands.
Huradesh and itās culture seem some kind of generic african/arabic combo? tribes, tribal tattoos, bright clothes, scimitars, slave harems. Spane calls them barbarians and crude beasts, and Estora tells him off for it. Zachary has to ask their/a (?) tribal leader not to lewd Estora. They donāt have much of a prescence, beyond some scenery as important trading partners and helping define some recurring charactersā personalities.
Thatās all I got off a cursory leafing through of HKT, so Iām giving this world-building some side-eye, but itās making me wanna do a proper reread for hype reasons.
Practicing completing art projects by painting scenes from Green Rider! This is Karigan first mistaking Condor for a raging dragon.
AU where Karigan, Zachary, and Estora are all equally cute and enamoured with each other. Give me the poly ships, Britain!
