(I just want to put my two cents on this; BE WARNED AS THIS POST MENTIONS SA! Tread carefully🫶🏾)
If you haven't heard, Haunting Adeline is getting a movie adaptation.
The book where the female main character is sexually assaulted/raped by her supposed love interest with a firearm is getting adapted to the big screen.
First things first, this should have never been adapted in the first place. I've seen fans of the book say that it shouldn't, surprisingly but it's somewhat better to keep it in the books.
Second of all, look at the discussions around Obsession. It's become a big hit (the horror genre is up, that's what I love to see) but some have walked out and still thought Bear is a good guy? The actor himself straight up said this is a horrible man but it's not getting through. He steals Nikki's autonomy and takes advantage of her body and that is not a bad guy? Some even laughed at that scene.
There might be a man out there who watches this film and thinks that a woman actually want this all because a woman was the one to create it. But I don't think that will matter because rape is rape. A person doesn't care if you do like or not like this sort of stuff because that is the basic foundation of sexual assault; your answer and response doesn't matter. And the political state as of now? No...
There are many things I want to write on but I'll keep it brief the best I can. In this day and age, sexual assault and rape isn't being taken seriously. Yeah, it hasn't been in general but it's gotten crappy with all the piss-poor leaders and wars/genocides around the world. Do research on how IDF soldiers treat Palestinian prisoners, what the RSF is doing to Sudanese women, what is happening in the Congo, Ukraine, Afghanistan, South Africa, etc.
You cannot escape violence against women, it's embedded into the world at this point. You cannot say "it's just fiction" because it was never fiction! It is a part of the lives of many and certain aspects of cultures that are highly bigoted. You can be assaulted and either you're married off to the man who did that or you get honor-killed because of it. The worst part is the women who are defending it by saying (and get this!) Adeline enjoyed it or she wanted it.
Learning about rape 101, that is one of the common reactions when someone admits that they were assaulted when you're a POS. "Why didn't you fight back!", "You probably wanted it.", "What were you wearing?", "They were asking for it!", "Your body liked it." Not only are they defending a fictional rapist, they're acting like a real-life rapist at that. And I saw some bitch who reposted about the stuff going on in South Africa defending the movie...HOW DOES THAT WORK? Some also justify it by mentioning some survivors have messaged H.D. and gave her thanks. That's good on them for healing but they do not speak for or represent survivors as a whole. If it was CNC, I'd understand but it isn't. The author herself confirmed that Zade did rape Adeline.
You can't win when you're a survivor. If you're a woman? You can get slut-shammed and degraded on what happened. If you're a man? You are judged for not fighting back or not liking what happened. Those are just the bad apples and hopefully, most respond in a positive way and show support to the survivor.
And correct me if I'm wrong, this could count as a snuff film in a way if you look at a certain angle. Anywho, that's my rant. If you're a survivor yourself, please don't let these weirdos get to you or try to say you're wrong for thinking this isn't okay. Keep fighting the good fight, I wish you much love and peace 🙏🏾
