Upstead aside, that was so much worse than I expected

Some of you WILL NEVER BE HAPPY with the writing of the show unless it's about a couple. This was about Hailey, she's still on the show, she didn't leave yet, it's her story, it's HER happy ending.

If you want fans to stop bringing up Jay, tell the show to stop doing it first 😂

He left at the beginning of last season and he is still brought up every Hailey episode. Name one other character that has happened to. So far, his name has only been used as a way to hurt her so for as long as that's happening, yeah fans are going to speak up and say how out of character that is- and how both of them deserve so much better. We can be on Hailey and Jay's side at the same time.

As far as I see it, Hailey could have had this whole story about her childhood and it would have been more effective without a divorce being a factor. They want a story about Hailey healing? Great. Don't make the first 2/3 cheap drama with an offscreen character.

I want to see Hailey heal. I want to see Jay get proper closure.

Do I want them both to grow and find their way back to the person who loves them? Guilty as charged. Healed doesn't have to mean alone.

Okay, I don't want to hear Gwen say another word about trauma and relationships. Every choice she made for Jay and Hailey was intentional. If you dismantled them because you subscribe to some archaic belief that only one couple can be happy, say that. If you're mad that actors left, say that. Let's not pretend you have some deep thoughts about trauma and relationships while Kim and Adam are making it work.

it’s insane to me how this woman went on and on about how they were going to close that part of hailey’s life and she would get closure and move on and now we see the episode and shock THERE’S NO FUCKING CLOSURE!!!!! bc i’m sorry papers being put on mail it’s not how upstead is going to end right… RIGHT?!? like i don’t know if you read the interview but like it’s the worst thing i have ever read in my entire life, she doesn’t get to say that shit about the couple SHE WROTE AND HELPED CREATE. i’m sorry about this, i just really need to say this and scream at someone

The closure thing is something I have a big issue with, too. Slapping a stamp on the envolope and dropping it in the mail basket without a second thought is so far from closure. Not hearing any conversations about how they got to this place isn't closure (because they can't make that make sense!). For them as a couple, is baseless and just bad.

Individually, it'll never be good for Jay. Maybe they can get Hailey to a place where she is balanced again. I don't have faith they will and I think it'll be really pedantic storytelling, but they have the opportunity to give her some semblance of happiness. Jay has been royally screwed over. Since the moment he left, he has been treated like some faceless husband Hailey has and not a character we knew and invested in for a decade. Never hearing from him again and just assuming he's in Bolivia indefinitely is the farthest thing from closure I can think of for him, and he deserves it just as much as Hailey.

I'm trying to find the words to verbalize why Hailey's story this season is bothering so much, and they aren't forming like I want them to.

Nevermind the completely unsubstantiated story choices that have been made (that's a whole post in and of itself), but this idea that Hailey will lose everything and will be beat down so hard for her to eventually find her strength again is so elementary. We know Hailey is strong. We have seen it proven time and time and time again for seasons. There is nothing wrong with letting a character whose growth was rooted in finding vulnerability and trust and learning how to let someone love her... keep that love. Even if it's offscreen. They are essentially demolishing all of Hailey's growth in order to foster a new story of growth and it's just a constant cycle where characters are built up to be knocked down and they don't actually go anywhere.

So Hailey joined in season 4 having proven her strength, but she was alone.

It seems like she might leave season 11 having proven her strength again... but alone.

I love Tracy so much and she's a phenomenal actress but I just don't have any desire to watch anymore. It's clear after that interview that Gwen has absolutely no plans to rekindle her and Jay's relationship and I just don't have the motivation left in me to stick around. The little thread of hope I had left was cut tonight.

I don't' post here much but I just wanted to say, as one of the few people who was clinging to any thread of hope she could find, I am feeling pretty hopeless right now. I do not understand Gwen Sigan's way of show-running nor do I understand her wording of interviews. I am VERY aware that Hailey Upton is a bad-ass, that has been proven time and time again. However, badass women deserve love too. Both can co-exist and I wish Gwen felt that way to.

Do you think if you look at the season without Jay and Hailey in your mind that Gwen has done a good job? Like if upstead and Bolivia didn't exist season 10 might have been fine?

You know what? This is a fair question and I've sat on it a bit, and I still arrive at the same answer. No, I don't think she's done a good job.

I'm going to look at this without either ship taken into account to avoid my biases, good or bad.

We've ranted about this centric structure a lot, but it really is the worst format for this show. There's not much more to add here. It has destroyed continuity and the team (read: team- meaning everyone, not just a few) dynamics are gone. Kevin and Voight are in basically the same place they began the season in. Torres' characterization is a mess. Hailey has arguably regressed. Kim and Adam are the only two who have seen any kind of growth, and that's a problem over 22 episodes with a main cast of six- which is small.

There were maybe six or seven storylines that spanned multiple episodes this year, yet they couldn't manage contuinty to have them flow without massive gaps. There are shows that manage four or five storylines per week.

The cases are hit or miss, but that's going to happen on any procedural. I'm more concerned with these A/B season arcs that are confined to their half of the season and only one or two characters. They have thus far ended fairly predictably and without much lasting effect.

Until Gwen can show me that she can manage several good storylines with continuity, consistent and accurate characterization, and guiding the writing for multiple characters interacting like they have known eachother for years and years- I will continue to be critical. Because that stuff hasn't happened this year.
