Gabe looked toward the direction of the voice and acted offended. “You mean, you don’t want to capture this rugged specimen?” He questioned, running his hand over his beard, chuckling. “Honestly, dude.. you should’ve just lied.. it’s creepy to take pictures of other people, but even creepier when it’s a couple..”

Leonardo suddenly stopped, lost in thought. “What if I hired an associate?”

Gabe furrowed his eyebrows. “I’m not a moron, did you forget who you’re talking to? I know everything there is to know about businesses.” Leaning back in his chair, he shrugged at the question. “It depends. Get someone who you can trust, who won’t fuck up all your shit. Someone who’s not going to turn around and make up stories because they’re not getting their way..” His voice trailed off before he got too into his screwed up business choices.

Sitting at the coffee shop drinking a hot tea, Val was watching the Olympics that was on the tv, her head tilting in thought. “I wonder how they are able to do that. I would be terrified that I would get hurt and break every bone in my body,” she spoke to no one in particular, rubbing her lips as she looked to see someone there. “Sorry. You can sit here if you want. It’s just me and I won’t bother you, I promise.”

Sipping on his coffee, Gabe was enthralled by the tv showing the winter olympic games. He was mesmerized, mostly because of the face that he had never been skiing or snowboarding before. Skateboarding was a childhood pastime of his, but there was no snow in Hermosa. “I’m not sure that I could do it either. They have them on those boards straight out of the womb.” He chuckled, shaking his head. “No, you’re good to stay if you want.”

    with his words about the house, her smile turned into a brief smirk. the first man lorie has ever known in her life was, of course, her father. she loved him, naively, but in return, all she got was sweet nothing. it took a long period for her to realize the man was never the one to love, he wasn’t worth it. he didn’t deserve to be called as a father, he was lorie’s pitiless overseer, nothing more than that. her father not showing lorie a little bit of leniency or love, lorie had decided that she was unloveable because she was too young to understand that it wasn’t her fault, it was her dad’s lovelessness. now, after years and years had passed, the most mesmerizing eyes she has ever seen were looking at her with pure love. a familiar bubble of passion rose in her chest. ‘you are the person who makes love possible to me and i am yours in mind, body and soul. ’ she greeted his first kiss with a peaceful smile, she closed her eyes to disconnect from the world, just to feel his kiss. she drew him into a deeper kiss. their lips trailed together from their closeness. lorie leaned their foreheads together as she breathed faintly. 'i love you too. i really do.’

Gabe grinned, hearing her words, “You better, blondie.” He smirked before leaning in to press his lips to hers. Lorie was the only woman he’d ever fallen in love with. Normally he’d date women, have sex with them and there would be no feelings. With Lorie it was different. She pulled out a different side of him, one that nobody had ever really gotten to know before. Looking back at the crashing waves behind them, Gabe had an idea. “Let’s get in the water. I’ll race you..” Raising his eyebrows, he stood up and took off sprinting.

Jared knew if anyone had waltzed over to him and proceeded to take his beer his actions would have been far less cordial than Gabe’s in that moment. Luckily, that wasn’t the case and all he managed to get was a slap on the wrist for bad behavior. “You’re the only person I trust to touch her,” her being a 1980 blue Toyota Corolla that lacked a majority of the functionality that the more update cars provided. 

“Off duty, that’s brave of you.  You could get so much shit from people tonight. Look at everyone standing by the bonfire, we both know they are gonna need something to make them happy again after that emotionally touching moment.” Clearly, someone was bitter about the whole ordeal as passive as he was, which often was the problem with drinking for Jared, sometimes he became a little too candid in his speech. “Are you buying into that? Throwing away your memories?”

Gabe shrugged, “Eh, let the alcohol soak up their sorrows. I mean, I’ve got shit on me if you need something, but I not intentionally selling tonight.” Taking a sip of his beer, he shook his head hesitantly. “I mean, any moron knows that memories live in your head, but I guess if it makes people feel better then all the power to them. I sell drugs for a fucking living. Who am I to judge what makes people feel better? I just brought my scrap wood to burn,” he chuckled, still proud of himself for saving it until tonight. “What about you?”

Having just gotten off work, Camila knew she was late to the bonfire and most everyone around her had enjoyed the open bar to the fullest – including the owner of the arm that was thrown around her shoulders, startling her for a brief second. “Beautiful? I suppose that’s one way to describe it,” she nodded, not sure if the night would be as enjoyable sober when everyone else seemed to be far from it. “I’m used to fires being something disastrous, y’know, dangerous, but I suppose they can be beautiful, too.”

Gabe stepped back from the girl, “Man.. people say I’m negative, but listen to you!” He laughed, looking back at the fire. “Makes everyone look different. Brings out the best and worst in people. But again, that just might be the open bar talking. “Did you bring anything to burn tonight or are you not into the spirit of the bonfire?”

“Very cute, but not so interested in long term relationships or motherhood, so I haven’t seen her in a while, but it’s all been worth it.”  He pulled out his phone and brought up some pictures of the baby, “Her name is Aster and she’s pretty amazing, it’s been a huge change in my lifestyle, but I didn’t have much choice in it, I get out here every once in a while, but people don’t really like it when you bring babies to places like this.”  Talon smiled and nodded, “Don’t get me wrong, I’m very happy with my life, but I do envy the freedom you have.  I’ve got to pay someone to stay at my house whenever I go to anything that might have alcohol, but still…I have to be responsible.  You probably don’t have a lot of rules you have to follow.”

“Hey, other’s loss is your gain, right?” He asked, taking the phone from Talon’s hand to look at the pictures. Gabe couldn’t help the cheesy grin that crossed his face. “Shit.. she’s beautiful. You make cute kids, Abel.” Handing the phone back, Gabe thought about what he said next. One day, maybe he’d give up this life for a family. He wasn’t ready to give it up yet, but he also wouldn’t bring a kid into this lifestyle. “No.. not really any rules. Plenty of freedom. Though, I’ve got the dogs, so I get the having to rely on someone to watch the house in a sense.” He chuckled.

    ‘what? are you going to kill me with your kisses or something like that?’ she replied to his empty threat. her hand found his to hold it tightly. 'matching the furniture with the floors? i got this but i swear i’m more useful than that, not like i can compete with you but still, i can do my level best.’ she shrugged lightly, her sculpted brows arched playfully.  'well, you should definitely pay us a visit, vincent and i will be glad about it.’ she wandered through her memories for a few seconds before answering gabe’s question. 'remember the thing i said about feelings? about how they can’t change? my dad still hates me. i like what i’m doing here and i like how i live here but he thinks that every decision i’ve made is miserable, he thinks i’m the best when i’m his puppet, he even tried to buy a bigger house in the strand for me. i am a disgrace to his wealth.’ lorie has drawn a red line for herself about family issues, she never talked about them with someone other than gabe. she was comfortable enough with him to share these.

Gabe shook his head, slightly embarrassed by her comment. “Maybe I will!” He said, rolling his eyes at her. “Really, it’s fine .. I’m perfectly capable. You can just sit there, look pretty and give decor advice.” It’d be nice to not have to facetime his baby sister every single time he needed to buy new home decor. He was sure she was sick of it by now. Gabe furrowed his eyebrows at the statement about her father. How anyone could ever hate Lorie was still a mystery to him. “Well, he’s missing out,” he muttered, thoughtfully. “Shit.. does he want to buy me a bigger house?” chuckling lightly, he move so his body was facing Lories, placing his right hand on her left knee. “Listen to me. You are beautiful. You are smart. And I’m proud of you for overcoming all of the things you’ve been through.” Reaching up, Gabe placed his hand on her cheek, stroking it ever so lightly with his thumb. “And if he isn’t going to love you, then I will love you enough for both of us. Got it?” He asked, before placing a kiss upon her forehead and then several pecks upon her lips.

“Twisted idea?” this was it, she got it. Both of them had different memories or ideas about this relationship, that was the only explanation. Alma then decided to stop waisting both of their times and swam to the shore, metting him there. It was dark enough not to show much detail on her body and honestly she didn’t care if there was someone watching at this point. Puling her clothes from his hand, she got dressed quickly. “Why do you kept me around, Gabe? You didn’t like me, always looked at me with a face like I was annoying, even at that party. I tried to make conversation and you just dismissed me, like I was nothing. How can that be a twisted idea?”, the girl wasn’t screaming or even in anger anymore, she was just frustrated. “I’ll keep Lorie away from this drama”, she pointed between them. “But she is my friend Gabe. Wouldn’t you try to protect your friend if you thought it was needed?”, her question was honest, practically begging him to understand her side.

As she explained how she was feeling, Gabe listened before replying much more calmly. “Is that was this is about? Are you made about me rejecting your conversation at the party? That doesn’t mean I hate you. That doesn’t mean anything other than I just didn’t want to leave with you.” Shaking his head, Gabe took a deep breath. “You took that the wrong way entirely. I’ve never once used you, nor did I ever treat you badly. You know I’m not like that and it’s not fair for you to tell people I’m some kind of monster when I’m not.” Gabe took a seat in the sand, “Look Ace, we both helped each other out with things over the years. That’s called friendship. We weren’t using each other. I mean, unless you were using me... but that’s not what I was doing. And as for Lorie, she doesn’t need protecting. You know that I’m not a monster. You know I treat the people I care about well. And you know I would never do anything to hurt her. So, please.. it’s not needed. Stop meddling. That’s all I ask.” Looking up at her, he rubbed the back of his neck, exhaling. “I understand she’s your friend, but you’re not protecting her if you’re not telling the truth, you know?” Gabe was calm now. He was really just trying to make her see the truth.

“You’re so lame,” he replied with a laugh “As a former English major, I find that whole sentence very offensive,” he added. “The keeper of safety? If you’re the keeper of safety then we should all be worried. Your drunk reflexes suck. Do you remember when we accidentally gave each other black eyes and had to explain that we actually weren’t mad at each other?” He laughed and shok his head as he thought about it. “Yeah the water was a little cold earlier.” He shook his head at the question. “Nah, never do. What about you? Cleanse yourself of anything this time around?”

“Well, as a proud American, I find that mustache offensive, so...” Gabe shrugged before laughing. He couldn’t remember a time where he’d seen Ruben that he didn’t give him shit for his stache. “Hey, that’s rude. I am so responsible and safe. My reflexes are fine, watch. Throw that bottle at me, I’ll catch it. Like a cat... Man I hate cats.” The last part was whispered almost to himself. In all honesty, he definitely had more than just alcohol in his system, but he was having a good time. “Oh yeah.. that was so funny.. that black eye lasted for like a week... Cold water isn’t good either, but it’d help that black eye we had, huh?” Gabe thought about his question before shaking his head. “Noo, I’m so clean. Gabe Donato is pure as fuck.”

    ‘i know, i know who you are. you don’t need to prove it for me and you should know that i’ll always try my best to understand you better than anyone.’ she took a small sip of her water. ‘no, it doesn’t and i’m not lying about it.’ she told, her voice was implying that she was telling the truth. ‘okay, tell me, are you satisfied with your house now? or would you like to change it a little more? i want to help you if you are about to change something this time.’ with his reaction, lorie burst into laughter  ‘oh shut up,’ she tried to jab him with her elbow between her loud laughs. ‘of course, i was that lonely, i used to be a dog person but waking up with a cat over your head is a cool experience, i highly recommend it.’ 

Gabe reached over and tucked a loose strand of hair behind Lorie’s ear. “And I’m lucky that you do that for me. Not everyone does. You better be telling me the truth, or else,” though it was an empty threat. Thinking about her question for a moment, he replied, “I want that ugly ass carpet and those couches out of the living room and I want that floor replaced in the kitchen. But you are not helping. Unless it’s to tell me what floors match what furniture.” He chuckled, taking another sip of his beer. “Well, I’m never going to have a cat, so it looks like I’ll just have to come spend the night with you some time.” He smirked over toward her, “So what else have you been doing other than avoiding me for all this time?”

    ‘well keep on doing that, i like that i can see you very different than the way other people do. that’s my privilege so yeah, i’ll be the one and only who is seeing the best of you, always.’ she smiled at his offer lightly, she was glad because he wasn’t trying to hand her a bottle of beer. ‘i could use some water.’ because of the time gap between their good ol’ days and their recent reunion, lorie wanted to tell him the little good differences in her life and also she wanted hear about the details she had lost about him too. ‘why don’t we talk about the little details between our old days and now? i want to know. actually, let me start with this one thing, i’m not sure if dolly and garth will like this one, that’s my only concern.’ she said, lorie was excited about sharing it with gabe. ‘i adopted a cat and his name is vincent.’   

“It’s a special side of me. Don’t get me wrong, I try to do my best for everyone, even when I don’t want to.. but I’ll always want to do my best for you and strive to do even better than that if I can.” He motioned for the guy bringing drinks to come back and asked him for a water for Lorie, taking another sip from his bottle. “Shit.. this doesn’t bother you, does it? Me drinking right here?” He hadn’t even thought of it until he’d asked if she wanted a water. Gabe had spent so much time partying with her that he wasn’t used to this new Lorie. “The little details, alright.. like what? You know I’m an open book.. ask me whatever.” He said, looking over at her. Gabriel raised his brow as she said she wanted to tell him something his dogs wouldn’t like. “Oh no... You turned into a fuckin’ cat person? You really were lonely huh?” He said, laughing.

Jacqueline held a notebook in her arms, clutching it to her chest. The worn-down cover with a floral design and the random pieces of paper sticking out indicated that the notebook had seen better days, and it had. It was the notebook that Jacqueline had used at her first post-college job, the job that overworked her and made her almost switch fields. But it also taught her many things - resilience, perseverance, and determination. But she was not about to focus on the positives, for that was not why she was burning the book. Tonight was about letting go of the past and looking forward to the future, or something along those lines. “I should’ve gotten rid of this two years ago, but better late than never,” she told the person next to her. “Are you throwing anything in?” she asked.

Gabe was standing close by the fire, watching the flames rise as people threw in their bad/painful memories. Shaking his head, he shrugged, “Nothing of importance. I had some scrap wood from remodeling my house I brought to get the fire going, but nothing really.” Looking over at the woman who had spoken to him, he asked, “What about you? What are you letting go of tonight?”

     Feeling lighter, Genevieve grabbed a drink and decided to enjoy the night. She looked beside her and smiled at the person standing there. “Don’t you love things like this? People coming together, and letting go?” Her voice was small, but she was every bit excited. 

Gabe nodded, listening to the other girl talk. “Honestly, it’s my favorite night of the whole year. Something about it just turns me into a whole different person.” He shrugged, taking a sip from his beer, “Or maybe it’s the combo of the idea of it and booze that just makes me soft.” He chuckled.

Nora loved his enthusiasm. True, it didn’t seem like it at first but Gabe had a lot of competitive spirit in him which was exactly what the blonde needed for her vengeance. “I knew I could count on you, Beastie.” She winked at him playfully. “Still am pretty, though. Are you saying I’m not?!” The woman did as told, holding tightly onto him and let out a shriek of laughter as the race began. 

Gabe laughed, grabbing onto her legs as she jumped onto his back. “Yeah, yeah. You’re pretty. Gotta keep that ego fed,” he teased. As the race started, Gabe took the lead running full speed. Looking back to laugh at the other couple Nora desperately wanted to beat proved problematic. Gabe tripped over his own feet and fell face first into the sand, sending Nora flying off his back and enjoying a nice mouthful of sand. Through spitting it out, noticing he was also spitting out blood from his cut lip, he grumbled, “You have got to be fucking kidding me...” His ego was more hurt than anything, “You ok?”

    ‘oh, shoving me off? to hide your secret identity from the whole town? you are breaking my heart, gabriel.’ she replied facetiously, a grin on her face. ‘but don’t worry, i’ll be telling everyone you are the worst of all, tough boy. your secret is safe with me.’ lorie whispered her last sentence into his ear like she was serious about it but her facial expression was the proof she was just joking around. 

     their steps leading them to the fire, her attention wasn’t on gabe for a few seconds when her eyes caught the stars, the stars were twinkling and dazzling, looking just like scattered moondust. she sat on sand and hugged her knees close to her chest after pulling gabe closer to rest her head over his shoulder. ‘i love having these moments with you.’ little details became meaningful for her when they were next to each other. little details like how pretty the stars were or how the raging flames of the fire created a beautiful redish hue.  

Gabe laughed, “That’s precisely what I’m doing here. But I could never break your heart, so I don’t believe that for a second.” Grinning, he looked over at Lorie, “You will? That’s my girl.” He felt a hand tap on his shoulder, he thanked the person as they handed him another beer. Cracking it open, Gabe took a sip. “Do you want anything before he gets too far? I can have him grab you a water or soda or something..” He offered.

Somehow managing to avoid jumping out of his skin ( and consequently ending up one of the many things being tossed into the bonfire ) Teddy turned his head to see who his friendly attacker was and released a quiet sigh of relief upon realising it was, at least, someone he recognised. “It’s pretty great. Everyone seems to be having fun,” he turned once more with a smile. “Drunk or otherwise.”

“Shit .. did I scare you? My bad, buddy.” He said, patting the other guys chest before realizing who it was. “Hey! Teddy! Yeah.. everyone’s having fun, but who’s drunk here? I don’t see any drunk people..” He looked around and pretended to be surprised. “You throwin’ any junk in there this year?” he asked, motioning toward the fire.
