fellow travelers review

“fellow travelers” is simply a masterpiece. never before has a show made me feel so much. jonathan bailey and matt bomer deliver incredible performances as hawk and tim, from their middle-aged to young selves.

not only does the show tackle mccarthyism and the red scare, but the impact of harvey milk, and the complex relationship between the red scare, the lavender scare, and the civil rights movement. i actually found myself researching some things i was completely unaware of.

one thing that stuck with me throughout the entire show was how these elements affected their ability to maintain healthy relationships with anyone—even their friends. when under the threat of being discovered, do you protect yourself, or stand for queer rights?

it’s such a stark contrast that is edited so well together in the show—the freeness with which queer individuals live in san francisco to the constant fear felt in dc.

i wish the red and lavender scare were better taught in schools. i wish people read more. but i’m glad tv does exist to educate people.
