          AN EYEBROW was arched curiously in response, though no comment was made. He could only imagine how Grimsley went about describing him to other people- if anything, Gladion was probably better off not knowing.

          “I’m glad that there are other people looking out for him, in that case. From what I know, he has a pretty unusual lifestyle.”

“Aah, he’ll need help with the situations he gets himself into.” What did that man involve himself with to get an expression like that from someone this age? Their mutual acquaintance must be enjoying himself somewhere on the islands, possibly earning himself a laugh with whatever mischief he could accomplish. “I’d say unusual is an understatement, but I’m sure you can attest to his... behavior firsthand.”

      Morty was never one to let him down- Grimsley could recall numerous times where he had called the other up in the dead of night to complain or just flat out ramble when he couldn’t manage any shut eye on his own. Of course, with that he had gone out of his way to pester the blond until he decided to fly out to Alola.

( Amazing, truly amazing. ) 

With the turn of his head, Grimsley’s gaze falls upon his friend. There’s something about the way Morty spoke that made him grin- even when woken at an ungodly hour the man could still be dry as ever with what he said. 

“ Now, that isn’t entirely wrong. Now, while I may only be forty-two, my unhealthy habits have probably started to catch up to me. ” 

He wasn’t going to lie about potential causes of his current state, nor was he about to give Morty a long winded explanation for calling him at three am either. Of course, that meant he was going to use the one thing he knew would change the subject and keep Morty here for a while. 

    “ I must inform you that Alola has these giant, ghost sandcastles that consume both Pokemon and humans alive. I hear you can find them here on this beach, too.  ”

( Nailed it. )

He can barely make it out, but if he would guess, Grimsley is smiling. 

He doesn’t like how smug his old friend can be at times like these, but he refrains from fully expressing his exhaustion and inability to deal with this. It’s a surprise how anyone could stand this, but the small little things that came with this friendship in particular included having his patience being tested. 

He draws a slow breath, trying to process what bits of thoughts he had into words in response. 

“You’re trying to make me go on a vacation aren’t you?” 

There’s a bit of silence that follows, save for the crash of Alolan waves against the beach, lulling Morty into finally conceding his defeat. His friend knows him too well, and probably already knew that he was going to be winning this one.

“That sounds absolutely terrifying.” We’re going to look for one.

                         A soft chuckle slips from pale, parted lips. Spinda – giddy swaying, teetering about before collapsing to the ground ( at least, the spinda Clair’s stumbled upon ). Could he really be  t h a t  bad ? Clair herself, is a shining example of somebody with the inability to perform any sort of dance. Her movements are graceless, uncoordinated and ones feet are not safe within her presence ( occasionally it’s an accident, most of the time it’s on purpose ). The dragon tamer is stubborn though, and it’s an enjoyable means of passing the time. 

                        ❛ That’s a shame. I have some time now, I could teach you if you’d like ? ❜

It isn’t bad to see her laugh like that. It’s different from what he reactions he’s used to seeing, and he offers a small grin in return. a shame it was, really. With his own form ruled by strict practice and posture, he could try – but he, possibly being as stubborn as she was, remains planted as he was. Living by restrictions and beliefs he grew up with seemed more important to him than entertaining her.

“As much as I appreciate the offer, I can’t learn Dragon Dance like your Pokemon.”

@gaistly challenged the gym.

the burning tower was an intimidating setting for those ill accustomed to its (for a lack of a better word) SPOOKY vibe. even the gym leader himself, though adventurous to a fault, took certain precautions upon stepping foot onto the ghastly premises. never linger too long in one spot ;; don’t look at something for longer than a few fleeting seconds ;; absolutely never disturb the pokemon, unless you are prepared to fight the spirits you have awakened. { three simple rules to walking around the burning tower without falling victim to indiscretion, aggression, or possession !! }

& so it’s slow going, wandering through the dark corridors & their adjoining rooms. as he walks, so do fists curl tightly around the handle of his net – as if somehow a few intertwined pieces of fabric would serve as protection. hues of violet intermittently narrow & grow large, a mind accustomed to bright light struggling to see through the gloom. despite being able to recognize vague outlines of objects here & there, it felt as though he were looking through a greyish haze. the only thing which resonated out from the darkness was a gaping hole in the floor, giving way to an abyss of black nothingness.

curiosity peaked, the boy draws near. in a gruellingly slow pattern, he presses against the floor with the front of his boot before daring to step upon the creaking boards. once within proximity, a wide grin overtakes soft features. down there, in the darkness, stands the ecruteak gym leader – purple bandana & all.

’ heya, morty !! ’ a voice filled with exuberance manages to boom through the otherwise quiet tower. kneeling down artfully beside the large hole in the old & rotting floor boards, he extends an arm over the edge in order to wave. ’ what’re you doing down there ?? ’

Soft murmurs tickle his ears ever so slightly, wisps of words from the past that tie him to this location. The Burned Tower, though revered by the city’s residents through and through, still was regarded with fear and an occasional gathering place for mortal mischief. Wild Pokemon have made it their home as well, and it is unfortunate to find what’s left of the once mighty tower weathering down to such condition.

A voice echoing from the debris above calls him out of his fond thoughts for the place and he has to squint to see the familiar shades of color he associates with one particular fellow gym leader of the Johto region. He can’t help but to smile even the smallest bit up at the much younger gym leader’s youthful energy, and a part of him wished that he had such enthusiasm when he was his age.

“Ah, Bugsy. I was checking on the status of the tower remains. If you don’t mind waiting a bit, I’ll be coming up to you shortly.”

                 Ghost pokemon are  n o t  her forte. Her swellow, half hidden behind the female, glares at the lingering roundish figure of a gengar. Winona herself, peers toward the pokemon in awe, temptation beckoning to approach but otherwise deciding against it, boots remaining firmly planted to the earth floor. Head cants to the left, lavender irises tearing away from the ghost pokemon, to the owner instead.          ❛ Does anything happen if one  l i c k s  you ? ❜

“Tough to say, though certain cases don’t end well.” That was easy for him to say, he was used to it by now. With a small pat on the violet ghost’s head, Gengar swiftly retreats behind Morty’s own figure as well, but not before sticking its tongue out in a needlessly playful, even childish manner. ( Now now, be nice. )

“I assure you that Gengar here will be on his best behavior.”

For a few extra moment, her breezy voice is HALTED —— && she cannot help but simply WATCH him through ebony hues. A hand reaches up, toying with a short strand of her hair. She isn’t ANGRY or anything with his ignorance of her presence. ( How could she be? ) Eyesight travels downwards to the accessory within his grasp —— what beautiful florals they were. Alas, her attention could only focus on SO MANY THINGS at a single time. 

                               “Morty, please do not                                 ignore me.” 

She doesn’t say so with MALICE or scolding or anything of the sort. In fact, her whispering tone is quite muted in emotional value. Perhaps she just wants some sort of a reaction. Say SOMETHING to her, in the very least.

Finally, Morty tears his gaze from the set of branches and stems to the fair guest in the room. Though he still feels remnants of the stinging irritation in accomplishing close to nothing for such an extended amount of time, there is a great sense of relief to be free of it for even a second. With a deep breath, the addressed sets the shears down into his Froslass’s much smaller hands before rubbing the back of his neck.

“Apologies, Erika.” And thank you, he means to add, but fails to voice it. The dainty ice type at his side shoots him somewhat of a frosty glance for it, and he turns his eyes away for a brief moment, almost defeated. “I wasn’t expecting any guests today.”

Dark eyes narrow at what would eventually become a floral presentation, showing nothing but a deep dissatisfaction with what is yet to be. Years of practice and patience are being lost to the slightest forms of agitation in the arrangement’s components on hand. Flower arrangements were something he didn’t boast in, but it was still a practice he has spent a considerate amount of time in refining his sense of choice and reasoning – to be frustrated with this of all things would be a first.

Trial and error had no place here as each cut on a stem could not be undone, and Morty could not do much other than peer over the hand dragging over his face as the other taps over a favored pair of gardening shears. It leaves no room left on his mind to greet the presence that has entered the general vicinity because maybe, just maybe, he can come up with something before he has to actually say something aside from the occasional ‘hmm’.

on face perception

Morty grew up with developmental prosopagnosia, or impaired face recognition from childhood, and still has difficulty visually recognizing people. He often relies on others’ voices and other forms of association ( e.g. spoken topics, what pokemon they have with them, etc. ), and it’s why he uses imagery and symbolism to describe people in most cases. Even though he has a way to tell between people now, this has put a strain on the occasional attempt to approach others, especially strangers, and it really adds to trouble discerning between the living and the dead when he doesn’t have the energy to concentrate. 

It has earned him quite a number of slaps across the face in the past ( literally and figuratively ), and though he wouldn’t mind talking about it if somebody were to find out, he has more reasons to avoid making it apparent if he can help it.

He’s been trying to avoid making the comparison since he arrived to this city, but Morty can see what the others meant before having his own visit to Sinnoh: the lighthouse, the sparkling waves, the crisp air... if he closed his eyes and didn’t know any better, he’d almost believe that he were in Olivine City. Already, there were enough reasons to rest here in Sunyshore rather than that flashy resort by Valor Lakefront  as such a place suited him just as much as travel did, and that is to say, it didn’t suit him at all. At least here, there was some semblance of home. 

( To be honest, the view of the Pokemon League from here isn’t so bad either... )

With a step away from the observation deck, he’s satisfied having made the right choice to stop here for the time being before continuing on with his little trip to Sendoff Spring.

She's been quiet for quite some time now, merely observing those around them whilst she's visiting. After another minute or so of silence, Clair finally glances at her companion. "Do you know how to dance as well?"

“Me, dance?” Clair’s question lights a small flickering sense of nostalgia in him as the first thing that strikes his mind is the dance theater. He was more of an admirer than a practitioner in activities that called for expressive movement, having rarely ever taking part in festivities if they had nothing to do with spiritual customs or tradition. With that kind of stubbornness, one could say that he wasn’t exactly the ideal guest to have around.

The ghost-type specialist eventually waves a hand dismissively, chuckling. “You’d sooner find Spinda more coordinated, I’m sure.”
