A Game of Cat and Mouse – Legion & Samus

Legion had set up traps here long ago. It was like a mine field if one was trying to navigate it. Traps that were meant to kill animals and humans. But that was deeper in the forest, maybe he could have some fun with whoever was out here. He slowly stepped, making sure not to trigger anything that would take his leg off or worse, lift him up into the air and make him hang from a tree like some piñata that was waiting to be busted by a well aimed shot.

He stopped at a tree and pulled the rifle closer to his body. Who could be out here? Suddenly he heard animals running and he took cover. Something had to spook them and human or predator had to die. He wasn't going to be eaten by some wild creature, that's not how he would go out. He peaked around the corner, trying to see if he could see anyone. So far there was no one.

Samus waits, feeling herself tense up as she focuses on the fight ahead. Most people weren't so receptive to being captured or hunted, so a fight was inevitable. All she could really do now is wait, because storming in would be the worst tactic to use against a sharp-shooter. She would be shot in the head before she got to him. Even if she wore the last of the Chozo armor, she's uncertain if it would help her. At the very least it would damage her visor, which would be one of the worst things to happen in a battle. No. Better to be stealthy. 

Slowly, she peers around the tree again, being certain to stay low, particularly because the animals around her have probably alerted him to her presence. After all, at her considerable height, she isn't precisely a small target. Best to be as careful as humanly possible. She rolls into a morph ball to carefully travel through some of the underbrush, before she moves into a crouching position again, checking her surroundings, before taking a careful step. 

He has to be close. Just stay vigilant, get the job done. Then, you can explore this planet.

Somewhere I Belong – Lara & Samus

The voice that responded was feminine, a distinctive quality certainly there, and yet it was distorted— perhaps the best way to describe it was digitized? I suppose I should have expected that, from the looks of the suit, and yet— it was still somewhat jarring. Foreign, at the very least. “Yes, hello…” I felt my resolve waver slightly, uncertain how to approach a situation. It was not like me to be anxious, level-headed in even the bleakest of moments, and still this— being seemed unlike anything I had yet to encounter. Echoing of a technology— of an existence— beyond that of the 21st century.

Stranger things have happened.

And, slowly, the tension began to fade. Instinct calmed. My hands settled away from the pistols poised upon the flare of my hips. She did not appear to be hostile. Merely cautious. Observant. For the moment, anyway. ”It is not often that I find others in a place such as this.” Unless, of course, I pay them a hefty sum, and even then, allegiance is seldom secured. ”Love for the past has always been outweighed by a love of greed, and, unless there are boundless treasures— beyond knowledge, you understand— there are not very many left who would travel this deeply into the mountains. I am one of those few…” I stood a little straighter then, “Lady Lara Croft… and you are?” It was not meant to be rude. Simply to the point. I was not fond of the ambiguity which hung low in the air and was seeking to do away with it promptly. Yes, yes, perhaps a ‘lady’ would be far more delicate, but here, in the dank and dust of the world since past, propriety seemed the furthest thing of significance.

Seeing the woman's resolve falter, Samus pauses, thinking of taking off her helmet to help put the other woman at ease more. No. That would be rather foolish, with this other woman being a stranger. Her eyes flick over the woman's form, seeing the guns on the flare of the other woman's hips. An armed stranger, no less. Even if she seems as though she means Samus no harm thus far, she could never be too careful. After all, to do so would have disastrous consequences which Samus has no desire to deal with at the moment. 

The smallest of smiles touches the corners of her lips as the other woman confesses that she doesn't run into people very often in these places. To be fair, Samus is aware of precisely what she means, because her lone missions so often took her to far away and isolated regions of the galaxy where the only forms of life would be the natural flora and fauna. At times, it could be lonely, but it's definitely preferable to the alternative. The thought of being responsible for someone else is not one she'd prefer to have. There are enough things to focus on a mission without having to worry about someone else. 

Because if you fail to protect other people on your mission, their death would be on your hands. That's blood you can never wash away. 

Her thoughts are broken by the echo of the Metroid Hatchling's dying scream, and the smile fades. No matter how she tries to shake this feeling, the Hatchling still haunts her. Survivor's guilt, I suppose. 

Quickly, she shakes away those familiar feelings of guilt. As a physical response to the woman's words, she gives the smallest of nods to show that she understands, before speaking again. 

"Neither do I." 

Silently, she listens to the other woman's words, glancing up for a moment to look at the canopy of trees which had grown over the top of the Chozo ruins, shading it from the sun. The woman's words resonate with her on some level.

After all, the Chozo themselves raised me to be the best of their kind– to be an explorer, a warrior, a scientist... to have an appreciation for history and nature. And of course, to preserve their ancient lore. I suppose on some level that's why I find these ruins... to preserve what's left of my people. To keep their ghosts with me in some small way. 

Samus gives a light smile again as the woman inquires her name, slightly amused by the manner in which the other woman asks for her name. It is strange to be in a place where someone doesn't recognize her by her red, green, and orange armor. Not an unwelcome change, however. Also having someone ask her something to the point for once is definitely a refreshing change of pace from the bureaucrats she's so used to dealing with who have to tiptoe around absolutely every issue, or the Space Pirates who simply hiss words at her. It's nice to have someone on her level.

When she speaks again, her voice is a little softer, but she still maintains a respectful tone.

"My name is Samus Aran."

Life in space was too slow for Legion. He thought that when he joined the police, there would be bad guys everywhere that needed to have a bullet to their face but apparently protocol dictated differently. He excelled in everything but never found the job satisfying. It was rather restricted and held him down more then anything. There were always too many rules for him to like. So he quit.

Doing bounty hunting and mercenary work was more his sped and style. Get the guy, kill him and then take the reward. An alive bring back required much more money, especially with the short fuse and temper he had. During his time with pirates and other mercenaries, they taught him tricks of the trade like how to make explosive and how to tune your weapons to make them more deadly. And especially hand to hand combat, something Legion took great pride and pleasure in. Nothing made his blood run like a good fight where there was only one victor. During these times he also made a reputation. He had acquired a sniper weapon and had painted both his space helmet and mask with a skull design, something that was know synonymous with him and his work. As the ship landed, Legion looked out and saw it. Noise traveled easily around even with the thick vegetation and rocks. It intrigued him. Few people ever set foot on this part of the planet and if they did they probably had a bounty in another system. He smiled and geared up, getting his mask and choice weapon along with some back up tricks Incase someone got feisty. He pulled the mask over his face and began climbing the terrain, looking out for any sign of someone.

Samus scans the trees, waiting for her visor to pick up on any lifeforms, so they wouldn't take her by surprise. By the lack of people, he undoubtably knew she was here, particularly if he had formal training as she did. All the more reason to be careful. As lightly as possible, she treads through the thick vegetation, hearing the calls of unknown fauna. 

The sounds of the animals make her pause for a moment, scanning her databanks for recordings of these creatures. No record comes up, and she makes a mental note to explore more of this planet when she isn't stalking a very dangerous fellow bounty hunter. After all, the last thing she really wants to happen is an ambush when she's trying to record valuable data.

Her eyes flick carefully over the landscape, watching for any movement. In the distance, her visors catch a small movement, and she slips behind a tree for cover, glancing around the trunk as the lifeform gets closer.

With the help of the new space suit Tony was able to get just about anywhere - of course it was still a prototype and things grew even more risky when he was nowhere near home. So he had to stop every now and then. The ship nearby had looked like the perfect place to stop, yet the company well it wasn’t quite so welcoming.

His hands shot up in front of him and eyes widened as the hood of his suit came down to reveal his face. “Repairs on my suit. I needed to stop off, that a problem, trust me I’m not out to hurt you I was just flying about. The suits a prototype I’ll be gone as quick as I came.”

Samus' eyes flick over the man's suit, appraising the technology for a moment, before she lets out a deep sigh. She had her weapon on hand, so perhaps it really wouldn't be too much of an issue if the man stayed for a little while, just as long as she keeps her guard up. If he proves to be a decent person, then he has absolutely nothing to fear. She has no reason to shoot anyone for just setting foot in her ship, unless they are a hostile lifeform of some kind.

Slowly, she removes her hand from the gun on her hip, not even realizing that she had reached for it in the first place. Instincts, she supposes. 

After a moment of silence, she nods, though she keeps a wary eye on him. "I have tools if you need any. Also, I'd recommend you keep an eye out for parasites. They keep trying to eat through the hull of my ship even though I've reinforced it so they can't get through it, and they will definitely try to eat away at your suit if they get the opportunity." After speaking, she grows quiet again, unsure of what to say. Things were always awkward around people.

As we struggle with the Great Poison, something stirs at the edges of our vision. It is the Hatchling Samus. We feel her, across the void, as she hunts the corrupted. Will our fates again be one? We wake in dreams. As the veil of lunacy descends, as past and future blend and shuffle, one image appears and flickers through the landscape, wraithlike. It is the Hatchling, the Newborn, walking the path of corruption, a lone figure shining in the toxic shadows. She comes dressed for war, and her wrath is terrible. Do our eyes look backward, seeing the Hatchling as she once was? Or does she approach even now, arriving in our race’s last hour, a savior clothed in machines crafted long ago by Chozo hands? Poisonous clouds drift across our vision." […] "The hatchling walks among us. Are these dreams? Memories? Foretellings? Time and reality swirl together like estuary waters, and we Chozo know not what to believe. She appears as ghostlike as the Chozo, but at times the mists clear. Clad in Chozo armor, wielding weapons our hands once held, does she dream of the Chozo as we once were? Does she long for her parents, lost to the same creatures that even now defile our sacred home? As the world continues to shift into brutal, disconnected images, she remains inarguably real: a fearless figure delving deeper into this blighted world, unmindful of the terrors that await her. We leave these messages for her, that she may find our Artifacts and deliver the world from its evils. Wraiths we may be, but our reach is still long indeed. We shall fight these invaders, and the Poison they would master, until the end.

A Game of Cat and Mouse – Legion and Samus

Objective: Retrieve Legion from his hideout and deliver him into Galactic Federation custody. 

Samus reviews her mission objective yet again, to make certain she was clear that she had tracked down the right person, and to be absolutely sure there were no special precautions she should take when dealing with this man.

If the Galactic Federation had noticed this man, he must be a danger to the border planets, and is apparently enough of a threat to warrant the Federation to commission her for the job, hence her caution. Of course, she didn't rely on the Galactic Federation's information alone to decide to take the mission, and had done some research of her own. It seems that he had been in the Galactic Police force academy as she had been(many years ago) and had graduated top of his class; and much like her, he had broken off and worked freelance. During this time, he had done some very  questionable things, and had crossed paths with the Space Pirates several times. It was this fact alone that made Samus take the job.

As she lands, Samus loads her arm cannon with missiles, just in case. One could never be too careful. Particularly not when dealing with someone who had a history with Space Pirates. 

After making certain she is properly armed to deal with any threats, she climbs out of her ship from where she had landed it a safe distance away, scanning her surroundings to see if there are any alien lifeforms to be aware of as she starts cautiously moving in towards Legion's hideout.

She definitely hadn't been expecting this random man show up on her ship, or, more appropriately, having a man climb down into her ship through the overhead hatch while she's attempting to do repairs on her ship after she had a collision with a meteorite on the way into the atmosphere of this unknown planet. She doesn't know why this civilian(or soldier, judging by the technology, even though it didn't appear to be up to any regulation standards, but on these border planets, that was the norm for officers) is here, but since she has tracked Space Pirates here, she can't be too careful. After all, it wouldn't surprise her if the cabal had recruited a few human beings along the way to help them because of their depleted numbers after the Phazon War.

Besides, why wouldn't I watch Alien at 1 in the morning? The Alien series directly inspired the Metroid games after all.

My Headcanon of Samus' character

Before I begin: Most of my sourcing will come from the Samus wiki and from memory. And from that, I rely almost exclusively on the games (with very little taken from Other M).  The wiki also points out that Samus was intentionally left as a pretty blank slate so the player could project themselves onto her. But you can only make so many games in a series before a little bit of personality begins to develop.  There’s no doubt that Samus is a loner. She is almost always alone, and not just by the nature of her job as a bounty hunter. But it isn’t because she hates others. She obviously does her best work alone, without having to worry about others.  But it’s clear that she isn’t a sociopath. Considering that she spared the metroid baby, she strikes me as someone who’s just introverted, and feels more comfortable around animals (see also: the creatures Samus saves in Fusion).  I bet that she is so respectful of nature (and most non-hostile native species) comes from the Chozo that raised her. She doesn’t hesitate to help those in need. But I’d wager she is very black and white about good and evil. She won’t shed any tears for any poor “misunderstood” creatures. The Luminoth and other kind creatures get to live, and she won’t hesitate to blast away pirates or violent creatures like the Ing. I imagine she’s kind of difficult to be friends with. Not because she’s mean or anything. She’s just quiet, and doesn’t often know what to say. She’s a little awkward like that. One thing that I have absolutely no doubt about is that she has a very strong sense of justice. She was with the Galactic Federation for a brief time, but I suspect she left to become a bounty hunter because she got tired to the political crap. She could never be a pencil pusher; she would want to be out in the field (so to speak), doing something she knows will make a difference.  Being a bounty hunter, I believe, isn’t really a job for her. The money isn’t a huge deal. The chance to explore is enough for her.
