A really harrowed-looking man who was probably in his 60s came into the shop today. He was wearing a gold-colored tie that kept sliding down the side of his neck because it was tied very poorly, and a rumpled light blue dress shirt. I did not see his legs or shoes. Part-time cashiers are sometimes just not afforded the luxury.

We said hello to each other as I scanned his items (diet coke and a nature valley granola bar- $2.69), me sounding more interested than usual just because he sounded so out-of breath and very engaged in his purchase. Also maybe because I could not see his shoes.

“How’s your life going?” He suddenly asked, swiping his card, not casually but almost pleadingly curious.

“Uhm, all right I s’pose” I said, too startled to think of a more cheery lie. 

He nodded somberly. “Me too… I guess.” He paused and looked at me for a minute and then just said “it’s a Monday, ya know.”

“Mondays are like this sometimes” I supplied, feeling like we were having a really weird conversation hidden under the one that was actually taking place.

And then he left. I forgot to look at his shoes.

PART II 

Honestly I had no idea that I would ever have the privilege of writing a sequel to this post. I considered it an odd moment, an interaction that changed me in a way, but a fleeting one. I automatically assumed our paths would never cross again, there was such a finality to that window of time on Monday August 22nd of 2016. And yet.

He returned.

I didn’t truly notice him come in, glancing up from whatever menial and already forgotten task I was busy with, but not registering who it was or why he seemed to put out an aura of familiarity. It had been weeks and I haven’t even caught a glimpse of him; the memory of Monday August 22nd of 2016 had faded like a dream. But lo he appeared before me, dressed in exactly the same fashion that made him look like he had just crawled out of carwash (albeit with a pink shirt and purple tie this go-around.)

His face lit up when he saw me, again holding a diet coke and a nature valley granola bar. ‘How is your day going?’ He asked earnestly.

‘Pretty well.’ I said, professionally containing myself, “how are you?”

“I’m good, I’m good” he said, sounding more cheerful than before but just as harried. When I handed him back his change and items and he looked like he was going to cry. 

“Thank you” he whispered with a look of reverence I have only seen on the faces of ancient church members receiving the eucharist.

“It’s no trouble,” I promised, trying not to look perplexed.

He bowed (LITERALLY BOWED) and then made a hurried exit stage left, reminiscent of Lear just before the second act, halfway into madness.

A Lear I had again forgotten to note the footwear of.

PART. 3. 

Okay I’m not even bothering with the pretentious Hemingway style for this one; I’m still reeling over the fact that he came back after four months AND on a Friday instead of a Monday no less.

Notes:

He was wearing literally the exact same shirt and tie he had on from part one, only with an orange sweater and fancy jacket over the ensemble to indicate that it was winter

He bought Lay’s sour cream and onion potato chips this time instead of his standard granola bar, but the diet coke was as usual

He told me that he always felt guilty for buying snack food but ‘you have to do what you have to do’

He then smiled sadly at me and said ‘enjoy your weekend… If you can.’

I sat in stunned, unblinking silence for about six minutes until a customer came up and looked me over worriedly

Part Four

First thing’s first,

Probably about two years of wear on them but otherwise well cared for. Socks were white, which I was only able to notice because this human being has zero clothes that fit and his pant cuffs were hovering about 3 inches away from his shoes. I keep thinking his outfits can’t possibly get any better, but this one takes the cake:

Crumpled white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, gigantic scarf that looked as though it were made out of mouldy carpet, neon orange striped tie, and a matching neon orange plastic digital watch that probably came out of a box of honeycombs back in 1988.

He did not grace me with his odd conversational charm today, but I received something better. A clue. 

Today he was buying a red notebook and three ballpoint pens instead of snacks (which was questionable but this is a Thursday we’re talking about; the day that falls on the chaotic spectrum and which I am known for my overzealous distrust of), and when he pulled out his luxury black Mastercard to pay for his items he said eight words which shook me to my very core.

“I do get a staff discount on these.”

This has never come up before because discount plans don’t apply to food items. I have no need to ask the identity of a man buying a granola bar and a diet coke. But now.

I didn’t speak as I handed him his receipt, just nodded courteously. Only staff members know about the specific discount so I had no real need to ask for an ID for proof, and I was cursing my mistake in not asking for it anyway. 

I must find this man. I have been here for three years and yet have only seen him within the confines of the store at odd intervals. I’ve never even seen him step into the store, or leave (another customer is somehow always in line behind him and demanding my attention.) I spent half an hour going through the college’s entire staff directory this afternoon… and may have found something. I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up, I am not yet certain and will have to gather a few more items of information, but for the first time I can promise a part to follow. Perhaps, an ending.

Cinq

Not an ending of any sort, but a very brief update from the field. My work schedule has changed since January and I was honestly beginning to wonder if I wouldn’t see the man again until the fall, as it’s been more than two months now. He startled me quite a bit when he literally blew in as if by a gust of wind right as my shift was ending. 

He was in quite a hurry and only bought a diet coke ($1.50) before blustering(?) off, giving me no chance to run an investigation or perception check, but if fashion checks were a thing…

Please imagine, if you will, a man wearing a yellow polka-dot tie that was not even tied, an orange scarf, the watch mentioned in my previous entry, khakis, a bright periwinkle shirt… and an impeccably matching woolen periwinkle cape. He was also carrying a very large black satchel with tartan lining, every single pocket of which was unzipped.

He looked like a hedge wizard.

I want answers.

I’ve said “I hate this” so many times on this website, and never actually meant it, because “I hate this” is just shorthand for ‘this is an example of a meme given a twist I wasn’t expecting with intent to surprise’. Which is, in of itself, a meme on this site. God damn it.

But this… This is something else.

The rapidity of a meme’s introduction to its zenith to its decline is so rapid that in ten years, you’ll need a damn twenty-page manual to explain this. ok let me see if i can break this down easily. YMCA is the easiest place to start - the song itself has become a meme over time with people changing the lyrics to reference other pop cultural events. so YMCA is meme one (1)

this first lyric replacement (”take the breadsticks and run”) is a reference to the tumblr meme ‘stuffing breadsticks into my purse’. i think everyone remembers that one so i wont bother to explain it. that’s meme two (2)

“man door hand hook car door” is a meme of its own, a creepypasta from i dont remember when. it was a terrible stupid retelling of the generic ‘stuck in a car while hook handed man tries to kill us’ story so the stupid title caught on for memorability. that in and of itself is meme three (3)

‘gun’ is… yeah i dont know how to explain gun. long story short you add gun to the end of a phrase instead of what you expect the last word to be. its shock funny. its everywhere but its popular to add to “man door hand hook car door” for.. some reason? gun is meme four (4)

and the thing is, this four meme combo is something thats gone around before. meme combos are, itself, a meme. which means taking this meme combo and mixing in another meme actually becomes meme five (5)

which leaves us at loss.jpg. loss.jpg was a terrible bad comic supposed to be about some tragic event, but it was presented so poorly literally no one takes it seriously, and for some reason recreating the four-panel setup has become popular. so thats meme six (6)

(but i need to add that this is the greatest version of loss.jpg i think i’ve ever seen. the initial ‘young man’ lines up with the guy bursting through the door, and the shock meme ‘gun’ matches the shock scene of the woman in the hospital and idk if OP even thought about that but it makes this just so much better)

Mistakes Were Made.

In which Adrien asks Ladybug if the Valentine’s Day letter is from her, gets the wrong idea, and thinks that… Ladybug… is Alya….

Then immediately panics about it.

The Revelation

     • Adrien, after Stormy Weather 2, still feels as though there’s a chance that the letter was from Ladybug, and goes to confront her about it. Ladybug is attending an event hosted by the mayor in a couple days, so he’d have time to meet her as Adrien there. 

     • When he asks Ladybug if she wrote the letter, Ladybug’s initial thought is to panic. But then she stops and thinks for a moment. And confusion takes over. Because why the fuck would Adrien think Ladybug wrote him that letter?

     • Listen, Marinette can get panicky easily, but she’s not stupid. She didn’t even sign that letter. There was NO indication that it could have been from her as Ladybug. So how the fuck did he get that idea in his head?

     • “Adrien, I’ll admit that I do know the person who sent you that letter, but… Why on earth do you think I sent it?”

     • Adrien goes home feeling very embarrassed. It’s not like he could tell Ladybug I thought you sent me a love letter because a ladybug landed on it! God, she must think he’s a weird obsessed fanboy now. He gave her a pretty lame excuse and ran off.

     • Adrien then falls back on his other theory, that it was written by Marinette. He’s looking through those notes that she wrote him, and her handwriting is definitely the same as the one on the card. There’s really no denying it. Marinette wrote him a love letter…

     • Wait. Back up.

     • Marinette wrote Adrien a love letter… And Ladybug knows that? Why would Ladybug know about Marinette’s personal love life? Marinette wouldn’t tell anyone something as personal as that, unless they’re her best friend. 

     • WAIT.

     • Marinette’s best friend is Alya. So logically, the only person who should know that Marinette sent a love letter to someone would be Alya. So would that make Ladybug… Oh no. 

     • ALYA IS LADYBUG!?!?!?!?!

     • Okay. so. Adrien is clearly an idiot. Despite Origins, he still somehow got tricked into believing that Chloe could actually be Ladybug, so it is not that farfetched for him to somehow think Alya could be Ladybug. The fucking Ladyblogger… somehow moonlighting as the very superheroine she’s interviewed before.

     • As you can already tell, Adrien does not take his “revelation” too well.

     • “PLAGG. P L A G G. I’VE BEEN FLIRTING WITH MY BEST FRIEND’S GIRLFRIEND. PLAGG I’M A HOMEWRECKER OH MY FUCKING GOD I CAN’T BELIEVE I’VE DONE THIS OH FUCK!”

     • (Plagg is cackling, that little shit.)

     • Adrien may be in love with Ladybug, but Nino’s friendship means the world to him. He is NOT going to fucking break his friends up over such selfish reasons. Besides he… He begins to realise that he’s never seen Alya in a romantic light before, and not even knowing that she’s Ladybug would make him suddenly start to now. He just can’t see that ever working out. 

     • Guess that means it’s time to move on. Which he finds very quickly is a very, very strange feeling. Alya acts so different when she’s Ladybug! He keeps forgetting that they the same person! But then he catches himself about to flirt all over again and immediately sees Alya’s face in his head, and visibly flinches back. Because hell no. He does not flirt with unavailable women, much less the very girl his best friend is head over heels for. 

     • It’s slow going, but the process is working. In a few days he thinks he’s got his feelings more sort out and can finally look at things more clearly. Which means… it’s time to work on the other thing that he’s been kind of willfully ignoring. Mostly because he was dealing with way too many other emotions to properly look this one over yet.

Moving On

     • Marinette Dupain-Cheng wrote him a love letter. And she wrote him one… quite a while ago, now that he thought about it. And, well, considering that she admitted to having a crush on Chat Noir, and her taking Luka to the ice rink, she must have moved on by now.

     • When did she move on? When did it start? Did it just happen naturally, fade away with time, or did he do something to make her rethink her choices? If he did something, then what did he do? Did he make her uncomfortable? Admittedly, he did tend to be a bit touchy-feely with her. And he’s often scared the crap out of her, appearing out of nowhere and kinda teasing her. (He couldn’t help it those times, though! Her reactions are just,,,) 

     • Oh god, what if she finds him creepy now? But no, he’s sure he’s been a proper gentlemen. Although, he did kind of just… drag her onto the dance floor that one time without even getting her permission. And god, he literally dragged her all around Paris in her pajamas, didn’t he? Did he ever apologise for that? Christ, there were pictures all over of her in her jammies. 

     • Okay, so maybe he hasn’t been as proper a gentleman as he thought he was. He does have a tendency to kind of mess with Marinette, both intentionally and not… It’s no wonder she got over him.

     • But what if she didn’t, he wonders. What if despite that, she’d still like him? What if—

     • Oh FUCK he asked her to help him get a date with Kagami, if she still liked him up until that point, he would have SMASHED her heart to pieces anyways!!! Nope, never mind, clearly he’s an idiot who doesn’t know how to properly care for a cute girl—

     • A… A cute girl. Oh. O h. 

     • This whole time, he’s been acting pouty over the fact that Marinette’s moved on from him at this point. And he… he didn’t even stop to wonder why he was being so pouty about that. 

     • He wants Marinette to like him. He wants Marinette to have romantic feelings for him. Which means… He wants to ask Marinette out. He wants to date her. He likes Marinette. He’s liked her for a while. 

     • This,,, is gonna be messy, considering he’s still getting over his feelings for Ladybug. Ugh.

     • Going to school after that realisation is daunting. 

Marinette

     • Marinette does not know what the fuck is up with Adrien but clearly he has some sort of problem with her and it’s really starting to get on her fucking nerves, which is saying something considering her colossal crush on him.

     • He’s been avoiding her for days and hasn’t been very subtle about it. Yesterday she said “hi” to him and he immediately looked the other way and ignored her. That was both hurtful and incredibly insulting. He’s also been super weird around Nino and Alya too.

     • Imagine her surprise when Adrien walks up to her and acts all friendly… As if he hadn’t been ignoring her for days……

     • Her reaction was not. Good.

     • It takes a few days before they’re back to what’s considered “normal” for them. Or, at least, as normal as possible. Because while Marinette’s forgiven him, he’s still acting… pretty weird. He keeps tripping and bumping into things, he’s always got this “deer in the headlights” look going on, and he’s been looking pretty much like a mess every morning. Fortunately for him, unkempt is a good look on him.

     • After the initial bad reaction to his behaviour, Adrien’s too freaked out to come near Marinette now. He’s angry at himself for not noticing his fuck-up, and he’s upset that he can’t go with the plan he decided to go with. He does like Marinette, and he wants to ask her out on a date, but how do you do that?! 

     • He’s also super worried that he’s treating Marinette as a second choice. She deserves better than that. But he can’t deny that he does like her, and at some point, she liked him too… And maybe, just maybe, she might still like him. Although, after his fuck-up, and the thing with Kagami, and virtually friend-zoning her at every chance he got, he kind of… doubts it. 

     • Nnnngh well he’s still gonna ask and hope for the best. Maybe. Later, probably. Uhh. Maybe he should try his hand at wooing her first? Which would be easier if he could get himself under control whenever he’s around her.

     • Eventually he manages to ask her out for a lunch date. He’s surprised by her overly excited “yes.” He can’t stop himself from thinking how adorable she is when she does her little happy butt wiggle dance. 

The Reveal

     • So Adrien and Marinette are dating. Adrien’s laid out his feelings with total honesty, and didn’t lie about having lingering feelings for another girl. He still really likes Marinette though and he wants to make it work with her. Marinette’s just super happy with his honesty and wants to make it work, too.

     • He’s slowly getting back to how he used to be with Nino and Alya again. There’s no more of that awkwardness, whatever seemed to have been bothering him, he seems to have recovered from it. Alya thinks he was just acting weird because he knew if he said anything about his feelings for Marinette, his friends would immediately tell Marinette. (Which… is true, if he told Alya. And if he told Nino, well, as much as Adrien loves the guy… he sucks at keeping secrets from his girlfriend.)

     • On the flip side, Marinette’s a little concerned for Chat Noir. He hasn’t flirted for a long time, and for a while he seemed super awkward and distant. He’s slowly coming back from whatever funk he was in, but the flirting has stopped completely. At least his jokes are still around. 

     • She soon finds out that he has a girlfriend. 

     • Ladybug: A girlfriend?! Are you serious?! Tell me about her! What’s she like? Is she cute? Which one of us is her favourite out of this superhero duo?

       Chat Noir: Yes, I’m serious! Are you questioning me? 

       Ladybug: I don’t know, kitty, I’m curious about the kind of girl who would be interested in you. 

       Chat Noir: Excuse you, I am a catch. If- if you’re really interested, then yeah, she’s uh… She’s adorable. She loves pink, and she has a little garden, and uh, when she’s concentrating she sticks her tongue out of her mouth and pretty much tunes everyone else out. It’s super cute. Oh, and I’m her favourite superhero, of course! 

       Ladybug: Oh, really?

       Chat Noir: Really! She, uh, confessed that she’s got a hero crush on me. Which is nice, considering she also had a real crush on me as a civilian. It means she likes both sides of me, right?

       Ladybug: You’re right. If we’re confessing things now, I suppose it’s about time to tell you that I have a boyfriend.

       Chat Noir: *whispers* Yeah, I know.

       Ladybug: Huh?

       Chat Noir: I said, do you now? Tell me about him!

     • Ladybug and Chat Noir gush about their respective significant others as vaguely as they can for months after that. In those many months, Adrien’s completely gotten over Ladybug, and is falling harder and harder for Marinette every day. He practically has heart eyes whenever she enters his field of vision. The mere mention of her name makes his heart flutter. 

     • At some point, however, Ladybug says something that… baffles him. And makes him question everything he thought he knew.

     • Ladybug: Ugh, my boyfriend is just so freaky pretty. His smile makes me want to melt.

       Chat Noir: God, tell me about it. My girlfriend the other day saw this new dress by Gabriel on the cover of some magazine—

       Ladybug: Oh, I know what you’re talking about! The red strapless one!

       Chat Noir: Yeah! Her face lit up when she saw it, it was the most gorgeous thing I’ve ever seen in my life. I wanted to kiss the heck out of her but I didn’t because I wanted to keep staring at her face. It was too pretty to look away.

       Ladybug: I don’t know how you have that self-control. Sometimes my boyfriend gives me this smile, it’s very specific, it’s that smile he makes when he’s daydreaming about kissing me and I just lose it. Every time without fail I grab that pretty blond head of his and—

       Chat Noir: I, wait, blond???

       Ladybug: Huh? Oh, right, uh. He’s a blondie. That might have been too much, but I guess there’s a whole bunch of blond guys in Paris, so I don’t think that’s too much of a reveal. Anyways—

     • It feels like the world is tilting off its axis. He’s staring at Ladybug, wondering why she would lie about something like that. And then he abruptly realises that she isn’t lying. Ladybug’s boyfriend is blond… Which means Ladybug’s boyfriend isn’t Nino. 

     • Ladybug knew about the Valentine’s Day card Marinette sent him. Ladybug knows the dress that Marinette was gushing about on the magazine. Ladybug’s boyfriend is blond. Ladybug…

     • Chat Noir: Hey, LB? I bet you and your boyfriend are the type to make little charms for each other, right?

       Ladybug: Well, I didn’t make him one, but I did give him an old charm I’ve had since like forever. He later made me one for my birthday. It was super thoughtful of him, and this was all before we even started dating.

     • Oh holy fucking s h i t. 

     • Chat Noir: My girlfriend’s name is Marinette.

     • Ladybug stops dead in her tracks, her rant about how amazing her boyfriend is dying out. She slowly turns her head towards Chat Noir. He’s staring at her just as shocked. Neither of them speak for a very, very long time.

     • Ladybug: … Adrien?

       Chat Noir: … Oh my god you’re really Marinette.

       Ladybug: Adrien?!

       Chat Noir: Holy SHIT, I fell in love with you twice?!

       Ladybug: You didn’t know?!

       Chat Noir: That you were my girlfriend?! HELL no! I thought you might have been Alya!

       Ladybug: HOW COULD I POSSIBLY HAVE BEEN ALYA?! WE’VE BEEN INTERVIEWED BY HER BEFORE!

       Chat Noir: THAT WAS THE ONLY EXPLANATION I COULD COME UP WITH FOR LADYBUG KNOWING THAT MARINETTE SENT ME A LOVE LETTER, OKAY?! I’M STUPID GIVE ME A BREAK!

       Ladybug: EXCUSE YOU, THAT’S MY BOYFRIEND YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT, HE’S THE SMARTEST GUY I KNOW, SHUT UP

     • It takes a while for them to calm down, but when they do, they’re ridiculously happy and sappy with each other. Ladynoir becomes canon that night, and all of Alya’s ships have finally come true. Clearly, some mistakes were made along the way, but thankfully, everything seemed to work out just fine.

And they all lived happily ever after, the end, okay I’m done now
