Kuai Liang: Seriously, Tomáš, how many people would you have killed if we’d asked you to?
— an exert of a future chapter in A Hymn of Snow and Ice. This is a draft, and is still being worked on. Content warning for canon-typical violence.
“Be careful,” Bi-Han looks to his brother, and then to him. “Be as stealthy as the night.”
“And as deadly as the dawn,” Ruoxing finishes the old Lin Kuei motto, before he leaves the room with Kuai Liang. They are quick to fetch Raimi and catch him up on matter at hand, before they are off.
“What do you think it is,” the yellow clad Zaki warrior asks the two of them. Kuai Liang shakes his head, while Ruoxing stays a bit behind them due to walking with his cane.
“According to Zhi, intruders. But you know him and his group—it could be a case of crying wolf to get Bi-Han alone,” Kuai Liang scowled. The tech prodigy frowns. “Have they done so before?”
“They have interrogated Grandmaster Jiaoyue about his choice to make Bi-Han his heir,” Ruoxing scoffed. “And on another instance, they cornered Bi-Han and berated him. I don't need to go into why we do not like those four.”
They come to a stop once they are on the border of Lin Kuei territory, pausing. And the sight that comes to their vision makes Ruoxing's blood stop.
Guofei, Yu-ting, and Min-jie surround an unconscious girl and a teenage boy who seems injured, yet will not leave her. The boy's eye is bleeding from several deep cuts—Ruoxing can see blood staining the trios jians—and his arms are tightly wrapped around the girl.
“Seems that small push of bravery did not get her that far, huh? You'll join your sisters and mother in Hell.”
The words are cold as Guofei speaks them, her smile cold, and it sends a shiver down his spine. He looks to Kuai Liang, who immediately nods. “We move, now.”
Kuai Liang makes the first move, the blade of his kusarigama darting forward as he throws it at Yu-ting's head, narrowly missing as the blade digs into the tree. Yu-ting freezes— and within a moment, Raimi's pulse blade is at Min-jie's throat.
Ruoxing unsheathes the sword from his cane, and presses it to Guofei's throat. His eyes briefly make eye contact with that gray haired teen—his eyes were an unsettling shade of gray, a startlingly pale colour that reminded Ruoxing of morning frost.
“You are okay now,” Kuai Liang murmurs to the other boy, who cannot be any younger than fifteen. (But no older than seventeen. Ruoxing isn't sure how old he is, but he is sure that he is not older than Kuai Liang.) Raimi's expression darkens as he looks at the three, eyes flicking to the unconscious girl, and then briefly in horror as he realises there are two corpses nearby.
A girl and a woman. The girl's hair is red and curly, reaching her shoulders. The woman grips a karmabit knife, her hand outstretched. As if reaching for her daughter. The woman's hair is a softer red, closer to brown than anything.
Sektor can see brighter streaks of fiery red in the teen boy's gray hair, and it clicks slowly. Premature graying, and the red in his hair— these were his family.
The girl the boy is protecting though is of Asian descent. She looks like she could pass for a Myeong-Yee woman, with her hair tied into a Ttoya meori hairstyle.
“My parents took me from Botswana to Niger, dropping me off in the wilderness. But thankfully I was taken in by the Zaki,” Cyrax had told him. Ruoxing wonders if this was like that case, if this woman took the girl in.
Cyrax seems to pick up on these small details too, and instantly, he glares at the three. “You three have got some explaining to do.”
“We—”
“I don't want to hear your excuses,” Kuai Liang cuts Yu-ting off, his voice uncharacteristically cold. Oh, he is angry, and his hands shake in anger before the young man forces them to settle.
“You can explain your actions to my father when we get back to the temple.” He uses the rope part of his kusarigama to tie the trio's wrists together, binding them.
His eyes soften when they land on the teen boy. So close to his age, yet losing those he had loved. Ruoxing almost throws up, imagining his sisters and mother in this position.
“I am so sorry for what they have done to you and your family,” Kuai Liang takes a step forward, offering his hand. “My older sister needs medical assistance,” the boy mumbles, eyes dark as he takes Kuai Liang's hand, pulling himself to his feet. “As do you,” Kuai Liang tells him. Kuai Liang looks to Raimi. “Cyrax, if you would?”
“Of course.” Raimi carefully lifts the girl onto his back, her head resting against the back of his shoulder. Ruoxing glances over in surprise. “She's still breathing?”
“Miraculously, yes. But we need to get her to the temple quickly,” Raimi's brows knit together, looking over at Guofei, Yu-ting, and Min-jie. “What do we do? We cannot rush and make sure those three don't break out of their binds at the same time.”
He thinks of his elder sisters, his own mother—and imagines them in this situation. Killed by someone else's cruelty, their disregard for life, and the thought makes him want to throw up. Ruoxing knows just what needs to be done.
“Then you two hurry back,” he says. “Send backup too, and make sure those two get medical attention. … I'll stay here until then.”
Kuai Liang looks like he wants to argue, but he beats him to it.
“A girl's life is in our hands, Kuai Liang,” Ruoxing reminds him. “We don't have the time for arguments right now.” Kuai Liang nods his head, complacent but not happy.
“Alright. We'll do it your way, Sektor.”
After they leave, Ruoxing secretly pockets the woman's karmabit knife, with every intent on giving it back to the boy.

Tomáš: When I see initials carved into a tree with a heart I think it’s so romantic. Two lovers on a date... one of them carrying a knife for some reason.
So I come from a big family, the eldest of six. Furthermore, the younger sibling born right after me keeps a log of all the out of pocket things all of us have said.
I am now just applying Kuai Liang keeping a log of out of pocket things his brother, his best friend (Smoke), friends (Cyrax), his brother's best friend (Hydro), and his nemesis (Sektor) have said over the years. As something to look back on when he inevitably is the only one of the original Lin Kuei left.

He is being hunted.
After splitting up from Hongbing and Xuan for their mission— two against one, and maybe his fire would just get in the way of their hydromancy and cryomancy— that was something he was completely sure of. Pyre was being hunted.
His golden eyes flick from side to side, trying to think of who would have the nerve to hunt down a Lin Kuei assassin. There is only one group of people bold enough—
And Yuran jumps back in time to avoid being impaled by a rope dart. Rope dart. Which means that the one hunting him–
“Scorpion.”
Someone jumps from the tree, and Yuran unsheathes his sword to clash against the two they wield. The Shirai Ryu reaches, and Yuran isn't fast enough to move before their tanto digs into his back.
They twist it, and it takes all of his strength to throw the ninja off of him. Blood drips from their knife, and it sizzles when it drips onto the ground.
Is his blood that hot?
He bites his tongue to not yell out, and ignites a fireball in his hand before he throws it at them.It burns off their hood— and he sees long strands of black hair being burnt into something rather short.
He realizes one very important thing about his “hunter” just by taking a very good look.
“You're…”
Her obsidian eyes narrow at him. “A woman?”
The Shirai Ryu stands up tall, brushing off her shoulders. Some burnt hair lays on the ground— Yuran's face heats up behind his mask as he realizes that he has singed her hair off. Well… If Tundra finds out he scorched an enemy's hair, he doubts he will ever live that one down. Oops.
Xueyan has always made it clear that while fighting those belonging to their rival clan, that one must never touch their hair, which signifies honor just as it does in the Lin Kuei. Even if it was an accident, and he didn't mean to burn her hair—
“No! No! That's not…” Yuran shifts his sword in his hand, looking down at her. His brows knit together. “— formidable. Not a woman.” He freezes at how that comes out, coughing. “No! No, you are a woman but you are also formidable.”
Scorpion cackles as if it is funny to her. As if it is the funniest thing to her. “Do the Lin Kuei not teach their assassins how to talk to women? Or is that a you thing?”
He coughs, but she does not give him room to try and explain himself. She points to him. “You take off that hood, and you fight me like a real warrior.”
It sounds so demanding, and yet… something in him wants to listen, so he does. He pulls off his hood, his hair pulled up into its usual bun.
“Your name,” the Shirai Ryu woman requests. “Pyre.”
Her eyes narrow, and he straightens up slightly. “… Huo Yuran,” he corrects himself.
Her eyes narrow once again, and this time, she raises her katana. “Then face me— Hasashi Satoko, the bearer of the Scorpion mantle— Huo Yuran!”
Dear lord. Is this the day he dies?
It almost feels like a dance. A deadly dance, but a dance no less. Her sword stabs his leg, and she twists. Yuran bites his tongue to hold in a yell of pain, and grits his teeth afterwards. His blood burns when it trickles down his leg.
He can hear the metal of her katana sizzling.
This fight is oddly informative, as he is learning that his blood is hot enough to sizzle metal. And yet… her katana doesn't melt. “Daylily metal?” He mutters.
It reminds him of Xuan, his name sake— and despite the pain, he still gets up. The metal that is named after the flower is extremely durable, and does not break under the elements very easily.
The Lin Kuei frequently scouting out those who can wield those with control of the elements is probably why the Shirai Ryu would use such a metal.
“So you've heard of it,” Satoko eyes him with something that looks close to being impressed as he forces himself up, gripping her katana tightly. “I'm surprised you can still stand.”
It is incredibly difficult to continue to do so, but Yuran doesn't tell her that. He swallows down the blood that wishes to escape his lips.
“As the clan's sole pyromancer… I do not go down so easily, ‘Satoko.’” Her name
She runs at him again.
“Talk is cheap, Yuran,” her katana clashes against his jian. He puts pressure on his good leg to not lose his footing. “Take away your powers, what do you have?”
“A sword,” he grits out, and slashes forward, pushing her back. Before he stabs her in her shoulder. She yelps, before grabbing him and throwing him against a tree.
He's never been thrown before.
Her sword presses against his neck, as if to say ‘I win.’ But then she steps back, making his brows knit
“Not going to kill me?” He asks her, as she sheathed her katana. “And risk not returning to my clan? I know how you Lin Kuei operate,” she narrows her eyes, using her tanto to lift his chin. “You always come in groups of two or three.”
His heart thumps, but he is not quite sure if it is out of fear or infatuation. The only other person who made him feel like this–
She leaves, with nothing more than her words fluttering on the wind. “Satoko…” He whispers, even after she leaves.
What a woman…
“Yuran!”
Both Xuan and Hongbing run to him when he meets up with them, his chest rising and falling as blood trickles from his back, and he limps as he walks to them. Even though he wears red, the blood will still soak through and become noticeable on his backside.
Xuan makes it to him first, and he helps him sit on a log in the middle of their forest, tending to his leg.
“What happened?”
“I ran into Scorpion.”
“A scorpion did all of this?” Xuan's brows knit together, confusion written all over his face. Curiously, he tilts his head to the side. “Was it a big one?”
He has never wanted to laugh as badly as he does now but that would probably, most likely, hurt so he doesn't.
“Not a scorpion, but Scorpion, it is a mantle given to our rival clan's fiercest warrior.” Hongbing explains with a soft tone. Xuan's eyes widen, then his eyes immediately darken. “Where is he? I'll-”
“She is already gone,” Yuran corrects. Xuan's eyes widen a bit more, already comically large. But the sixteen year old does not ask any more questions, using his hydromancy to heal his back. Yuran winces slightly, before his shoulders eventually relax. There's a soft soreness that is left, but it is not unbearable.
“Scorpion… The mantle is passed down like the cryomancer mantles?” Xuan guesses. Yuran shakes his head, then he turns his head to Hongbing. The question he poses is clear: do you wish to tell him, or should I? In the end, it is Hongbing who clears his throat.
“From what we have learned from the Shirai Ryu we have run into in the past…” Hongbing begins to say, frowning. “It is a mantle given to the warrior who wins a fierce but non-lethal fighting competition. It is not something one could just inherit, and to my knowledge, no one has ever inherited from their mother or father.”
There are heritary mantles, and then there are mantles that are won. For Yuran, his mantle was earned through sweat and for blood— and for the likes of Hongbing, his was heritary, inherited as the youngest cryomancer in the clan.
Yuran found himself sighing. Maybe Hongbing wasn't a great assassin like his father or older sister, but his dearest friend still had his strengths in other places.
“Regardless, better Scorpion than the green death.” Hongbing sighs. Xuan's face pales at the title. “… The green death?”
“Uh huh. Rumors say she is the Shirai Ryu with the most Lin Kuei kills under her belt.” Yuran almost feels bad with the way Xuan has gone pale. Like he might faint, so Yuran sighs. “Imai Haruhi is just a myth made to scare Lin Kuei, Hongbing.” Yuran rolls his eyes. “Just some cautionary tale.”
“You don't believe in her?”
“Of course not, A-Bing,” Yuran says. “Because she is not real.”
And Xuan finally relaxes his shoulders, enough to breathe a sigh of relief. “Come on,” Hongbing sighs– more so at his antics than anything else.
“It is time to go home.”
“In accordance with Lin Kuei tradition— Hai Xuan has earned the mantle ‘Deluge,’ and in the eyes of the Lin Kuei, is officially one of us!”
He should be focused on the ceremony— he really should. Xuan has become something akin to a second friend, and he is very proud of him, but Yuran's mind is still on that woman.
Satoko… Will he ever see her again? A part of him wants to think yes, but another does not wish to think about the situation that would make them see each other again.
Will he even be allowed to walk away alive the next time?
“You're distracted, Pyre. That's not like you,” Hongbing softly teased from next to him. His cheeks growing hot, he promptly ignores the cryomancer. “Enough…”
“I'm only wording my concerns,” Hongbing mutters. “Scorpion did not poison you, did she?”
“There was no poison in that rope dart or her swords, no.”
“So, what did she…” Hongbing's eyes suddenly grow wide, lighting up with amusement. He bites his lip to stop himself from laughing. He raises a brow at him, teasingly.
Yuran refuses to indulge his whims this time. “Do not even think about it.”
“Yuran, she stabbed you and you're thinking about her.”
He shrugs his shoulders. “She was a fierce opponent,” he says. “Certainly worthy of her name.”
Hongbing eyes him, clearly not believing him, but he does not press the matter. Maybe because the Lin Kuei will certainly escalate the matter if they found out one of their Lin Kuei has been unable to focus ever since fighting a Shirai Ryu woman who could keep up with him, step for step.
And well? Well, Hongbing does not need to know she told him her name before they fought. That is something he wants to keep for himself.

I hope you don't mind me making this abt my Violets in Rain AU. 12 animalities & their reasons why, thank you for the ask Angel! Going to try to answer this without spoiling what I have planned for my fic. This took me about 2-3 hours to write out.
Tomáš. (💨) Gray wolf. In MK1, I believe his 'canon' animality is a gorilla. But as for the reasoning for Tomáš in my au being a gray wolf, it all comes down to a 'wolf in sheep's clothing.' In this au, I have Tomáš written as the very epitome of that phrase, who pretends to be weaker than he actually is so people let down their guard around him or underestimate him. Wolves also mate for life, so take that as you will!
Kuai Liang. (🔥) Polar bear. In the previous timeline, his animality was a polar bear, and I think that both he and Bi-Han would have animalities fitting of their status in this timeline as the sons of the Lin Kuei's Grandmaster. Polar bears are also very protective, and he's pretty protective of his big brother in this au...
Hanzo & Harumi. (⚔️🗡) A pair of tigers. Now, tigers are very, I want to say, vengeful of their young? And we see in invasions that it does not matter who died and who was resurrected as a specter, they both would become Scorpion and seek revenge for the loss of their family and clan. So having them as a pair seems to make sense. (Ignoring the fact that tigers do not mate for life.)
Yun-Hee/Hydro. (🌊) Siberian tiger, but specifically one with leucism, making her animality appear white instead of orange. Siberian tigers are also exceptional swimmers, which I think fits a hydromancer pretty well. Siberian tigers are also the national animal of South Korea, Yun-Hee's homeland.
Theo/Cyrax. (🌻) Albatross. They mate for life, and they're also known for flying without flapping their wings. The Albatross symbolizes a dualistic nature; representing a psychological burden and an omen of good luck. Which is.. accurate, given what he's going to go through in this fic.
Ruoxing/Sektor. (🔨) Black vulture. So! Another bird that mates for life, and only takes another mate if their previous mate dies. When I say Sektor is ride or die for Cyrax, he is ride or die. Black vultures will also perform aerial displays to reinforce their bonds, and I don't know, I think it would be at least entertaining if Sektor did this. Also for thought: Cyrax and Sektor flying together.
Bi-Han. (🧊) Snow leopard. Like I said with Kuai Liang, it makes sense that he and his brother would be animals whose habitats are in the cold. Snow leopards are solitary animals, which I think fits Bi-Han's personality.
Johnny. (🌟) Red wolf. Native only to North Carolina, red wolves form close-knit packs. Which?? I'm thinking could apply to his relationship with Kenshi, Kung Lao, and Raiden as Liu Kang's champions.
Kenshi. (🌙) Honshū wolf. In one of their dialogues together, Kuai Liang tells Kenshi that he "protects his clan most fiercely," and Kenshi responds "like a lone wolf protects its cub." So I think a wolf makes sense for Kenshi, though a different species than Tomáš, even if that species is extinct.
Raiden. (⚡️) Japanese black bear. Now, Japanese black bears are usually shy and not usually aggressive, but they can be when protecting their young. And I think about what Raiden's anger can lead to— and the fact that Raiden, canonically, goes to Kuai Liang for help managing/taming that anger.
Kung Lao. (☀️) Pallas cat, a wild cat that is maybe the size of a large house cat. I don't have a lot of reasoning other than I think it is funny to think about Lao being surrounded by two wolves and a bear. He gets riding privileges. Pallas cats are also natural predators of birds, so I think it could make his dynamic with Sektor a little funnier.
OOO I'm really glad this relates to your fic, it's really interesting to see their personalities and backgrounds reflected on their animals, while also showing how they interact with other characters, your brain 🧘🏽.
I think they all make a lot of sense, especially Hanzo and Harumi as tigers (I'd love to draw something based on that idea), and Kenshi as a wolf taking care of his son is both endearing and very accurate imo (I like to think of Takeda as a fox, so technically still within the family canidae).
Also lmao at Lao being just a cat (a bald one at that /silly).
I'd love to spend some time researching the symbolism of certain animals in the characters' respective cultures and see which ones would fit as well. Overall I'm very curious about the concept of relating certain characteristics to those of an animal.

With the kombat kids? I think it depends because I've barely figured out what I want to do with Frost, and haven't plotted what I want to do with the others yet. However, I do like the idea of animalities, soo! I think, the way animalities work is that they can be related to their families, but in most cases, animality is based on the person's personality and inner values.
Keeping up with the cryomancers as arctic/snowy animals (even if Kuai Liang isn't a cryomancer in this timeline), I think Frost's animality would be a wolverine. Now wolverines are much smaller than polar bears, of course, but no less dangerous.
I think you are onto something with Takeda, plus in another au, I did have him have 'Kit' as a nickname. So! His animality would be a Sakhalin/Ezo Red fox. They're a bit bigger than the other fox species in Japan. I wanted to have him as a fox from Thailand, but to my knowledge, foxes are not native to Thailand. They do have 'flying foxes' though, which are a species of bat.
Jin would be a Shrouded Leopard. To my knowledge, its native to China, but the thought of Jin grabbing his older cousin by the scuff of his neck when he acts up would be funny. Plus its the 'younger but taller & older but shorter' dynamic that I think would be funny for the cousins. (I also want to see Jin climb a tree.)
Cassie would be a lioness, I think. I think it suits her, since she's shown to be pretty protective. (I think?) But yeah. Funny enough, while researching the dynamic between leopards and lionesses, I found that adoption can occur, albeit rarely. So Cassie and Jin would sort of have a sibling dynamic + mlm/wlw solidarity.
Jacqui's animality would be a badger. Badgers & red foxes form mutualistic bonds sometimes in the wild, and I think this would be cool to explore in a fic. The main reason I have her as a badger is that symbolism wise, the badger symbolizes fierce determination and tenacious persistence. I think this fits her character pretty well.
