very funny to see people on here treat non-fiction as 1) a coherent category 2) the "teaches you things" genre in order to position themselves as intellectuals

@murderthegods every so often you’ll see a post make the rounds telling people to read more non-fiction, as opposed to watching tv shows or reading fanfiction. and imo people treat non-fiction on this website like it’s the intellectual version of self-help books. “Non-fiction” is kind of a nonsense category here because people mean it in a purely normative sense - they aren’t talking about hate tracts or pseudoscience or state propaganda or outright misinformation, or usually even things like memoirs, they’re talking about “good” and “smart” non-fiction (essays, journal articles, and books that roughly conform to their pre-existing beliefs, and they may or may not declare those beliefs in the post). The popular command for others to “read more non-fiction” is so non-specific as to be meaningless if taken at face value, but normatively, it is a command to “educate yourself” on the implied good topics contained within the normative category of non-fiction.

I don’t think it’s a helpful call to action, because I don’t think it’s really much of a call to action to begin with. People mostly just want to self-aggrandise about how smart they are and how easy it is for them to teach themselves by reading. It treats learning as this pick-up-and-go skill you can do by simply reading a book, and if you pick up a smart book, you will learn smart things. And even speaking as someone who is a lifelong “good student,” it took me over a decade of post-secondary education to learn how to teach myself while reading, and I think people operate on this assumption that reading information = learning information. I don’t think “read non-fiction” is a serious statement and has a bunch of deeply flawed assumptions about self-teaching, knowledge generation, and education that usually makes me roll my eyes whenever I see those types of posts
