I had this on a repost but I decided it deserved its own spot on da blog
I don’t like starfleet academy, and it’s not because I think it’s too “woke” I love gay, I’m gay. It’s just not a good show. There is a lot of things about it but here is some on my list.
- the ship is too big: all of the classic trek sets, the bridge is small enough you could talk to the person across the room comfortably, the quarters were small, the common areas are small. I think generally this smallness in the sets makes it feel more intimate, makes the characters closer (physically and emotionally) and makes us feel closer( like we are apart of the scene) where as in Star fleet academy and other new trek the ship is so big, it give the audience more of a perspective of disembodied observer, i think it also creates a disconnect between the characters themselves.
- the characters are lacking: now I’m not saying that every character is bad, but they are no where near the level of contention, growth and personality that other treks with ensemble cast achieve. Their personality’s, character growth and connections with the other crew are so boring that like.. gun to my head I could not tell you most of their names.
- they should not have set it 800 years in the future: the fact that the had the doctor be a main character and the whole Sisko episode proves that. They want to build off the 90’s trek but for some reason they time jumped. It would make so much more sense to make it like 20 or more years in the future. Just like next generation built off the original series, Star fleet academy is about teaching the next generation. Why should we not embrace that connection instead of skating around it like they are doing. We could have a starfleet academy that where some of the amazing characters from the 90s are no longer actively serving in starfleet and have to deal with aging slowing down and passing you knowledge to the next generation. Having to teach young people and young problems while no longer being in that stage in their life’s.
Imagine Kira Neriss, teaching a bajoran studies class or a military training course. Harry Kim teaching science or engineering. Tom Paris teaching the cadets how to pilot. Etc etc. all that with some new characters and a good strong ensemble cast of cadets to complement and challenge the characters we already know.
The doctor could be an academic researcher and hologram rights activist in the “present” instead of 800 years in the future where for some reason holograms still have to fight for their rights. and have Jake teaching English or literature, or even better a guest speaker at the academy. Instead of whatever is happening on starfleet academy.
And no one really cares what I think but it had so much potential , it’s just a bunch of little things that stack up that make the show just not feel like Trek.
