one thing i hate the most is that SOME people portray camilla as this fawn who has done nothing wrong. i agree that richard was an (incredibly) unreliable writer but i don’t think that one statement about the macaulay twins having a penchant for leading people on is false. but of course discussions are always welcome.

“oh she’s the only girl!” what makes you think that being the only girl in a group full of boys rules out the possibility of said girl being the complete same? for all we know she could’ve been worse, or she could’ve been more innocent. one thing’s for certain, she still murdered and participated in covering up said murder.

AGAIN!!! i would love to hear other opinions on this.

edit: i hope that everybody knows that camilla was a victim but she was also part of the problem! those two things can coexist at once. what i’m criticising is people who only see her as “just a girl” and has done no wrong.

Metamorphosis and The Bell Jar are basically cousins who went through totally different eras but had the same breakdown, right?? Like Gregor wakes up as a literal bug and Esther wakes up feeling like she’s trapped under glass, and both of them are like, “Wait… why can’t I function like everyone else anymore??”

Gregor’s body betrays him, Esther’s mind betrays her, but the VIBE is the same — the world’s like, “Uhh you’re not productive / pretty / normal anymore?? Gross, please hide.” Gregor can’t go to work, Esther can’t play the perfect 1950s girl game, and suddenly everyone’s like, “Oh no, something’s wrong with you.” NOT “something’s wrong with the system,” obviously 🙄

Then the COMMUNICATION thing?? Gregor’s trying to talk through the door like, “Guys it’s me I swear,” and it just comes out as bug noises — meanwhile Esther’s trying to talk to therapists and family and everyone’s just like, “Smile more, sweetie.” Both of them are literally screaming into the void and no one gets it.

And the body stuff, oh my GOD. Gregor’s body turns against him physically, he can’t control it, he’s all legs and panic. Esther’s body turns against her emotionally, she can’t sleep or move or feel anything. It’s like they both got body-snatched by anxiety and shame.

And the families? Gregor’s family hides him like he’s a dirty secret, and Esther’s mom is all “think of how this looks!” It’s always about appearances. It’s like both stories are giant middle fingers to the idea that your worth equals your usefulness or prettiness. The second you stop performing, you’re invisible — or worse, a monster.

And THE ENDINGS??? Gregor literally dies and everyone’s like “ok great vacation time.” Esther survives but that final line about stepping into the room? It’s giving “escaped one bell jar, probably another waiting.” Neither of them gets peace, it’s just quiet.

So yeah, moral of the story: Kafka shows the world giving up on you when you stop fitting in, Plath shows you giving up on the world because it never fit you to begin with. Same alienation, different outfit.
