This is what I mean when I say my garden is dominated by the hot colored flowers. But the bottom two photos are some of the flowers from seeds that @marassagirl gave me. They’re outside the garden because we’re trying to encourage more wildflowers in the yard to combat the devil incarnate that is Bermudagrass.
They are, in clockwise order, johnny jump ups, "aloha mix" hummingbird nasturtium, "spitfire" climbing nasturtium, & "climbing phoenix" heirloom nasturtium. The johnny jump up is one that self seeded, I think (which is always fun because you never know what they're gonna look like), but all are from Renee's Garden.

Bagged or baled peat is a regular offering at most garden centers, but in recent years, more attention has been paid to how this histosol is unsustainably extracted from the earth.
Peatlands—also called bogs or mires—are unique and vital water-saturated habitats that house a number of threatened species: Acidic-soil lovers, like carnivorous plants and heathers, are among them. Like forests, peatlands are carbon-sequestering sinks, often hosting thousands of years of successive layers of low- and slow-growing plant deadfall, as well as sphagnum moss.
When peat is harvested in strips for use in the garden (or worse, for use as fuel), these delicate biomes that have taken eons to form are irreparably damaged. In building gardens that require low pH or high-organic-matter soil, consider a number of sustainably-produced alternatives to keep the integrity of these non-renewable ecosystems intact. Although these solutions require some experimentation, they provide the basic building blocks for rich organic soil.

A goodly portion of the flowers in this year’s spring garden, including the first nasturtium blossom. That one is a volunteer from last year’s jewel mix that exploded in the pea bed after I pulled them all up, but I transferred it to the bottom of one of my trellises.
I really like the snapdragons, but you can’t see the yellow mouths on the front right one. Got a pic of the back ones, though! I’m hoping to stop but Osh today & will have to resist the urge to buy more. I have about 10 already!
The white alyssum pictured was planted back in like early February and the purple got put in about a week ago, so they haven’t had time to catch up. But they will, as an upcoming post will show, they so far make pretty great living mulch. The purple & lemon flowers are called "berry pie” violas & they are so awesome. I think they’re my favorites.
The alyssum, snapdragons, & nasturtiums will go all summer long but the pansies won’t. I might be able to keep them going into May or early June, but they’ll def expire in the heat. I’m going to let them reseed themselves, though whatever comes up in the fall won’t look like the ones I have now. But that’s okay, I like surprises. :)
You know what is awesome? Lemonade. You know what is AMAZING? Basil rosemary lemonade.

I’ll make a full post about it later, but this is the micro composter I just put together! I’m hoping to use it to kinda do a hot frame & bump my frame temps up enough to start putting my seedlings in there at night. I need room to start a couple trays.
A to do list for me. You should totally ignore it, since I'm gonna explain half of it in up coming posts anyway. Okay, change of game plan slightly. In no particular order: - re lay hoses & lay walkway mulch (coffee grounds, weeds, leaves, & bark over newspaper & cardboard) - mix compost & coffee grounds to entice wormies to make the new beds better & refresh the old beds. cover inactive beds with the plastic from the row cover - plant out purchased flowers - sow seeds for peach alyssum, Johnny jump ups, California poppies, & climbing nasturtiums. Maybe the breadseed poppies too, even though they don't transplant well. - transplant some oxalis along south fence in garden 1.0. - sand surface of ALL seedling containers outside - continue murdering Bermuda grass on north side of huglekulture. Pull down fence, do huglekulture thing, deeply cross hatch devil grass with spade, murder roots with more boiling water, lay cardboard, replace fence, place vertical barrier. - get mycorrhiza samples for compost bins & huglekulture from honeysuckle, apricot, & pepper - sift leaves out of the dirt for huglekulture project - actually finish the huglekulture thing (as many fungi laden wood chips as I can spare + COFFEE GROUNDS! + other greens) - plant the bastard (bush beans for nitrogen, alyssum + CA poppies for ground cover, oxalis on north side? Note to self: huglekulture needs to be north-south, not east west. - get cutting of sweet violet - set up violet houseplant pot(s?). Wash the plants, pot them, sand surface. - decide where the chicken run will go, move it there, & start prepping for planting - transfer solo cupped seedlings to child frame as soon as it's reliably above 60° at night - put up trellis netting on east fence & replace yarn one from last year - figure out how many t fittings needed for the PVC pipe overhead trellis. Buy them & build it -acquire air pump, etc. & bucket??? - check useless of statue for olla, sow mounding nasturtiums, build obilesk for sweet peas
Most of my recent acquisitions! Violas, pansies, snapdragons, alyssum, a five inch stack of newspapers, tile, sand, a million cardboard boxes, & half of my town's Starbucks consumption from yesterday. I swear I have actual posts coming down the pipe. I'm just buried in the first rush of spring!

Weeding the expansion is basically done. Next steps: -mark off the plant squares -lay plastic on the tomato squares -mulch the shit out of it -put down stepping stones -put in the trellis -re build the fence to withstand cucumbers
Pretty sure my honeysuckle is AT LEAST ten feet tall. #gardening
