If there is one thing Keke Palmer is going to do, it's keep it real. The singer, host, and actress (who is currently starring in the very cozy and delightful The ‘Burbsseries) opened up to her fans about her evolving sexual identity in a Valentine’s Day Instagram post. The post, a carousel of gorgeous photos of the star, was captioned and began with her sharing what she got up to on the holiday: “Chile, let’s talk about it. How was your Valentine’s Day? I spent mine with my mom, sister and son. Then went to a colleagues smashing birthday bash,” she shared, before turning to the topic of conversation. “Yea, I said smashing. Absolutely nothing romantic went down, crazy right! I’m so cute! But I like no one and I’m almost 100% sure I’m asexual. I have no interest in anyone, but I wish I did!” Palmer had previously come out as queer during a guest appearance on “The Best Podcast Ever with Raven and Miranda,” in 2023. “There is like an unsaid thing that can make you feel — and because I liked guys too, I was kinda like, ‘Well, we don’t have to talk about it,’” she explained at the time. “Because I like guys too, it was like that’s another extra thing that no one really has to know about. I don’t really have to live out.” But at the age of 17, she began to accept her queer identity. “I ultimately just feel like the acceptance of that part of myself, in general, was a part of my process of being able to have love in my life,” she said. At the time, Palmer was still in a relationship with her former partner, Darius Jackson, with whom she shares a son. Palmer’s discussion about her sexuality has always been one of evolution and acceptance, and it's a journey that she has invited fans into, as she did again with the latest realization of her likely asexuality. She ended the post by encouraging her fans to weigh in. “Well go on’ share in the comments,” she wrote, “the good, bad, inbetween, I just wanna chit chat!” The post currently has over 140,000 likes and nearly 2,700 comments, which were overwhelmingly positive, many of which welcomed Palmer to the ace community.

i firmly believe that one of the reasons tumblr latched onto project hail mary so hard is because we're all so obsessed with the dead wife trope lately and grace is his own dead wife. half of the book/film is grace experiencing a dead wife montage about himself and that's beautiful to me

I think people forget that Stratt amnesticized Grace with the goal that Ilyukina and Yao would be there to help him, y’know NOT DIE, and then THEY DIED before he woke up.

So like she gets the recordings and realizes Yao and Ilyukina are dead before he wakes up so he’s got no pilot, no engineer, and no memories.

And then you also have to remember that the EXISTENCE of these recordings and the fact they were accompanied by the Taumoeba means that an amnesticized Grace somehow managed to save earth without a pilot or engineer and shoddy memory that only vaguely gives him enough to work with as he works.

I adore the way Project Hail Mary has exploded in popularity since the movie's release, and I really adore how reading Grace as aroace is so commonly embraced among the fandom. It feels like such a breath of fresh air.

Now, obviously platonic relationships aren't a rarity in fiction; buddy comedies and sit-coms about a wacky gang of friends are entire genres of their own. But what's rare is those platonic relationships being treated as genuinely equal to romantic relationships. Friends who raise kids together; who live together without separating when one gets a romantic partner; who plan their lives and careers together. Friends to whom the other is and always will be the number one priority. Having Project Hail Mary end on Grace choosing not to return to Earth but to stay with his new alien buddy on a planet where he's the only human, meaning a romantic or sexual relationship will be forever out of his reach, and yet he's not only content but happy, feels revolutionary to me.

I tend to really latch on to stories with these sorts of dynamics: Malevolent's focus on two people moving heaven and earth to stay together and become utterly intrinsic parts of each other because they're literally in the same body, yet there is no romance between them. Joan and Sherlock in Elementary slowly figuring out how to live together rather than alone or with a romantic partner, and how to raise a child in their shared household. The Skulduggery Pleasant books having the main character start dating as she gets older, but outright stating that the boyfriend is always going to play second fiddle to her detective partner, because those two are unhinged about each other in a much deeper way. Split Fiction having two leads who save each other in every way that counts and see the very ugliest and most broken parts of each other and come out the other side as best friends who build a career together. The Murderbot books having its lead dragged kicking and screaming into a loving friendships of deep importance without romance ever being an expectation. This is my bread and butter.

the fact that everybody is in a teen superhero story excerpt raven who is in a cosmic horror story will never fail to delight me. the tonal dissonance is great for me personally. oh everybody's prepping wedding gifts? smash cut to raven agonizing over the slow manipulation of her mind in a dimension where the sun and the stars cannot reach and there is only darkness. smash cut back to wedding prep! vic has a date to the wedding! fantastic. excellent. 10/10
